2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport gets a mild makeover

While we wait for the upcoming Eclipse Cross and the Outlander Sport's smaller successor, Mitsubishi is doing everything it can to keep the current, aging Outlander Sport relevant. The latest move is a mild refresh inside and out. The company is also offering a new option package. All 2018 Outlander Sports receive slightly tweaked front and rear fascias. Up front, the most significant change is the addition of LED daytime running lights inset of each fog light. Just below them are new air inlets. The main grille with the Mitsubishi logo also now features two slim chrome bars. At the back, the rear bumper has a new faux skid plate in the center. On each flank are more angular reflectors. Inside, Mitsubishi says the center console and shift lever have been redesigned. More importantly, the Outlander Sport now has a 7-inch infotainment display that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There's also a new Touring Package option. It adds a panoramic sunroof, some tweaks to make the car quieter and more refined, and safety features including forward collision mitigation, land departure warning, automatic high beam headlights, and a rear camera. The updated Outlander Sport will arrive at dealers this fall, but pricing has yet to be announced. Related Video:

Mitsubishi recalls Mirage in snowy states for airbag delay

The Basics: Mitsubishi is recalling 25,185 examples of the 2014-2015 Mirage, built between August 7, 2013, and September 2, 2015, sold or ever registered in states that use salt to melt ice on the road during the winter months. Those include Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The Problem: Snow with road salt tracked in on boots could cause a wiring connector to short out behind a kick panel next to the driver's footrest, potentially delaying the deployment of the front airbags. Injuries/Deaths: None reported. The fix: Mitsubishi dealers are being instructed to inspect the electrical connectors, replace any corroded ones, and fit a waterproof sheet to prevent any further corrosion. No timeframe has been set as of yet. If you own one: Try not to track in too much snow. Watch out for the SRS warning light on the dashboard, which will alert you if there's a problem with the airbags. Mitsubishi e-Evolution concept EV has AI that can teach you to drive better

Following a teaser last month, Mitsubishi has revealed additional details, and a couple more images of the e-Evolution concept. The new teasers show a car with a pretty wild profile. The windshield is incredibly long and raked, and it generally has an angular, wedge-like shape. It's also an extremely cab-forward design, which is possible because it is fully electric, and there isn't an engine up front to take up lots of space. That's bad news for anyone hoping Mitsubishi might just hybridize a high-strung turbo engine. But it is still all-wheel drive, courtesy of a trio of electric motors. There's one motor up front for the front wheels, and a pair at the back for the rear wheels. These rear motors can apply different amounts of power for torque vectoring. The e-Evolution also has a unique feature in its artificial intelligence ( AI) system. Mitsubishi didn't go deep into the details of how it works, but by using many sensors, the AI can adjust how the car drives and reacts based on road conditions, traffic, and driver preferences. It can make you a better driver by silently assisting you, but it can also make you a better driver by teaching you. Apparently it can assess your driving skills and advise you on how to improve. Hopefully the e-Evolution, or whatever production model takes inspiration from it, will be fun enough to drive that you will want to improve your skills. The e-Evolution will be on display at the Tokyo Motor Show. It will only be on display for one of the press days, so if you happen to be able to get to the show then, make sure you catch it.
