2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport recalled for leaky transmission

The Basics: Mitsubishi Motors is recalling 45,731 Outlander Sport crossovers from model year 2015. Built between June 25, 2014 and November 25, 2015, the affected vehicles use the base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmissions. The Problem: A clamp on the CVT hose may have been installed incorrectly. If the hose comes off, transmission fluid can leak out. While the transmission will start acting up – and eventually grind to a halt – the bigger concern is what happens if the transmission fluid comes into contact with hot surfaces: fire. Injuries/Deaths: Thankfully, it doesn't sound any owners have crashed, caught fire, or been injured or killed due to loss of transmission fluid. Mitsubishi didn't list injuries or fatalities in its recall paperwork with NHTSA, but the chronology only describes "warranty claims," which sounds like the vehicles never caught fire. The Fix: Dealers will inspect the hose clamps on all 45,000 Outlander Sports and reinstall them if there's a problem. Repairs are free of charge. If you own one: Since NHTSA's bulletin doesn't advise owners on whether they should or shouldn't drive their vehicles, we recommend looking for leaks and checking your transmission fluid level as soon as possible. Junkyard Gem: 1991 Mitsubishi Mighty Max Super Max

While the Montero SUV sold well enough in the United States, Mitsubishi-badged pickup sales didn't quite measure up to those of their Toyota, Nissan, and Mazda rivals. Second-generation Mighty Maxes are hard to find, so this '91 in Colorado was worthy of inclusion in the Junkyard Gem canon. The ADX Florence Supermax federal prison is just 100 miles to the south of this self-service wrecking yard, but it opened several years after this truck was built. The garish lettering and striping has the look of a dealer-installed option package. Chrysler sold rebadged Mitsubishi pickups for decades, as the Plymouth Arrow and Dodge D-50/Ram 50. When Mitsubishi began selling vehicles under their own brand in the United States in 1982, the Triton pickup got the Mighty Max name. The Dodge Ram 50 always outsold its near-identical Mighty Max twin, but the debut of the all-Detroit Dakota in 1987 cut into Ram 50 sales; by 1995, truck shoppers who wanted a Mitsubishi pickup had no choice but the Mighty Max. After 1996, the Mighty Max was mighty gone. This one is quite solid and doesn't appear to have been wrecked, and the odometer shows a surprisingly low mileage figure for a 26-year-old Japanese pickup. The 2.4-liter 4G54 four-cylinder engine is gone, purchased by a junkyard shopper. This engine family went into everything from the Mitsubishi Galant to the Hyundai Sonata, not to mention the Chery V5. 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander shows its new nose

Mitsubishi is already using its 2015 New York Auto Show invitation to tease the new nose on the refreshed 2016 Outlander, but the changes aren't too easy to spot in that stylized shot. Now, thanks to a photographer in Japan, we have a better chance to see what the redesign really looks like. Based on this image and the invitation, we can clearly see that the refresh is liberally borrowing from the styling of the Outlander PHEV Concept-S from the 2014 Paris Motor Show. They share a chrome-outlined, X-shaped grille with two bars on top to connect the headlights, and a gloss black panel in the center provides some visual contrast. The only major change seems to be the foglight design that loses its LED embellishments on the production version compared to the show car. According to Indian Autos Blog, this Outlander was snapped while waiting at port in Japan, and the photo was posted by a user on the blogging site Livedoor.
