Mini Countryman PHEV caught at electric watering hole

Our spy photographers have once again found the next generation Mini Countryman out testing in the wild. This time, they caught it replenishing its thirst for electrons. Although we knew some sort of hybrid Countryman was coming, this confirms its existence and plug-in capabilities beyond any reasonable doubt. Like the rest of the Mini lineup, this new Countryman will be noticeably larger than its predecessor. It also appears to feature a larger, more aggressive grille and lower intake vents. Other than that, the car appears to be quite evolutionary in design. Our spy photographers expect the plug-in hybrid Countryman to debut in 2019 powered by a combination of the 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder and an electric motor. We have also predicted that the gasoline engine could power the front wheels while the electric motor (or motors) powers the rear wheels, which together could provide all-wheel-drive and 240 horsepower. Mini Coopers make the best Pac-Man ghosts in Pixels movie trailer

The concept of fighting off real-world incarnations of classic arcade game characters out to destroy the Earth sounds like a rejected idea for an SNL Digital Short. But it's coming to theaters this summer in a film called Pixels starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James. Based on the trailer, it seems the premise of the film is that aliens receive a message from Earth and decide to fight back with vintage arcade characters, including ones from Space Invaders, Q*bert and Donkey Kong. To defeat these baddies, Sandler and Co must beat them in the style of their respective games. When it comes time to take out the giant glowing-yellow Pac-Man, their plan includes outfitting a quartet of Mini Cooper S models as the ghosts. Squint at the cars' license plates to spot a subtle, visual joke. They are called Inky, Pinky, Blinky and Clyde – the nicknames of the enemies in the arcade. While it could be argued that Sandler and James haven't quite been at the top of their games recently, the story here appears to boil down to Ghostbusters with video games, which could work purely on a nostalgic level if it's properly handled. Mini discounts 2019 Oxford Edition for U.S. military members, recent retirees

Mini introduced the 2019 Mini Oxford Edition last fall to offer college students or recent grads a cheap, well-equipped new car. Now it's extending the same offer to active duty military members and recent retirees. Specifically, you'll have to be an active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces, or have retired/been honorably discharged within a 12-month period of verification of eligibility. This has no effect on the student offer for full- or part-time students of any two- or four-year accredited college/university. That deal also applies to those who have graduated in the last 12 months, along with students currently enrolled in any kind of post-grad program. The Mini Oxford Edition continues to be the same car equipped with the same options as before. This means the two-door starts at $20,600, including the $850 destination charge, and the four-door is priced at $21,600. Standard equipment not included in the base "Classic" trim includes a 6.5-inch infotainment system, parking sensors, panoramic moonroof, heated seats, upgraded 17-inch wheels and an automatic transmission (a manual can also be optioned). Additionally, there are more exterior colors to choose from than on the Classic. In total, Mini says you're getting $6,900 worth of optional equipment for no extra cost here. Mini says the Oxford Edition is available in dealers now. It's great to see Mini make this program available for more people, because it's a superb discount to take advantage of if you're part of these groups and had Mini on your shopping list.
