This car has been kept up by myself for the past few years, but now that I need 4-wheel-drive and locking differentials, my toy needs to find a new home. This car is a vintage British automobile, so keep that in mind when perusing the images. I have performed many upgrades on this car, almost all in the name of reliability, through the past 3 years. The car appears to be a Mini City, but with the running gear of a Cooper S. So this car has the 'big block' 1.3L engine and 7.4" disc brakes.
  • Battery is recent, maybe 2 years old.
  • Fixed a parasitic battery drain that caused the battery to completely discharge and destroy the previous battery.
  • Updated the A-series dynamo to an alternator.
  • Replaced all flexible hydraulic lines with braided stainless lines (clutch and brakes).
  • Replaced the clutch master cylinder.
  • Replaced all brakes at all corners. Only some of the hard lines were retained.
  • Replaced all front ball joints.
  • Replaced all engine electrical wear items (distributor rotor, cap, plugs, wires).
  • Replaced rear subframe with substantially lightweight alternative.
  • Preventatively replaced rear wheel bearings.
  • Relocated fuel pump to inside the boot for better access.
  • Full coilover suspension on the rear.
  • Installed adjustable Koni shocks up front.
  • Installed 3-point seat belts.
  • Added a third LED brake light to better help those tall trucks see when you brake.
  • Installed rally light bar, 2 driving lights, and 2 fog lights. They come on with high/low beams respectively, or can be left always off.
The bad:
  • I would recommend new tires. The ones that are on it are old and are getting a bit smooth. They are not expensive to replace, though.
  • Needs a better mounting option for the exhaust. When I removed the old subframe, I removed the prior mounting point and it could be done a little better now.
  • Odometer does not work. It has been at the same value as long as I have had the car. The speedometer works, though.
  • The switches for the rally lights are not permanently mounted. I could not bring myself to drill a hole in the solid wood dash, so I left the switches in the driver's side cubby.
  • Front windshield can leak a little bit in rain, probably just needs new grommet.
I have a full walkaround and driving video on YouTube. This car is also for sale locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction early for a local sale.

Sorting through the rat's nest that is Mini's model history

Sat, 13 Apr 2013

What do Austin, Morris, British Motor Corporation, British Motor Holdings, British Leyland, Rover Group, and BMW all have in common? Each company has had a hand in bringing the world a sprightly, fuel-efficient, front-wheel-drive fun box on wheels - the Mini.
The Sir Alec Issigonis-designed car has been sold under more brand names and with more model designations than most of us would guess. For seven generations of the classic Mini, from 1959 to 2000, the car carried a bewildering number of model names as well. (Note that's even before BMW took over the nameplate, and starting building cars styled as "MINI" rather than "Mini" in 2001.)
As is its want, Hemmings Daily has taken the time to break down the complex lineage of the car, with a kind of model etymology that makes for a pretty entertaining read. Click over to the site to give it a go; but check out our gallery of classic Mini pictures before you jump.

Mini Cooper Royal Wedding Edition: For the couple that literally has everything

Wed, May 9 2018

As far as wedding presents go, it sure beats a hand mixer. Mini has created a one-off car to commemorate the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The car won't be brought in and parked next to the gift table, however. Instead, it'll be given to a charity chosen by the royal couple, which will then auction it. Mini's design team has personalized a Mini Cooper 2-Door with a hand-made roof graphic and a special interior, which features 3D-printed parts and special embroidery. The idea behind the hand-applied multi-layer roof graphic is that it's a combination of the Union Jack and the Stars & Stripes, representing the couple's nationalities. As an extra touch, the opened doors will project a "Just Married" sign onto the ground. Small detailing around the car is also bespoke, from the chrome finish to the side scuttles. Inside the Crystal White car is a Satellite Grey leather interior, with a trim strip announcing the first names of the bride and groom, as well as the wedding date. There are also accents in the door cards that match the roof graphic's colors. And just in case you're digging the stylistic vibe of the Royal Wedding Edition (not really the official name, but let's go with it), some of the custom work on the car can be replicated with the Mini Yours personalization program. That includes the option of 3D-printed parts. After the wedding on May 19 , the car will go to The Children's HIV Association, or CHIVA, who will auction it. Here's hoping it commands a good price. Honda engines and giant killing in the classic Mini Cooper

Mon, 22 Jul 2013

Electric Federal has taken a fresh look back at the enduring legacy of original Mini with a video interview with Heritage Garage's Graham Reid, one of the foremost experts on classic Minis. As Electric Federal points out, it's important to remember that the Mini did not start out as a performance car. It was built in response to the Suez Canal crisis of the mid-50s, which had a similar effect on British gas prices as OPEC did on American prices in the 1970s - rationing and rapid price jumps.
Through the years, Minis have grown from their budget roots to become seriously competent performance machines. As Reid says, a 150-horsepower Mini on the right track should have no problem outpacing a contemporary Porsche 911.
For some time now, classic Mini owners have been dropping Honda engines under the tiny hoods of their classics. With up to 250 horsepower pulling a car that tips the scales at barely 1,200 pounds, the upgraded Mini is "a real sleeper," Reid says. Interestingly, Reid doesn't mention another increasingly common swap in the Mini community - Suzuki Hayabusa-powered Coopers.
