Up for auction is a 2002 MINI Cooper with less than 42,000 original miles. First year for the 'new' MINIs, and I have been the only owner. Tires installed at 36,582 miles. Body looks great, interior looks good with small wear tear in driver seat. Engine and transmission are in great shape. Muffler is rusted but still effective.
HOWEVER, there is an interior rain leak that I can not locate, and it has not only soaked the carpets but it has affected the wiring. I located the wet wires and connectors in the driver's side wall, cleaned them and WD40d them and that worked for a while. Eventually they got wet again, and now the tachometer and it's gauges do not work (which I could live with) and the battery keeps dying (which I can't live with). I installed a new battery and it started and ran great, but 4 days later the new battery was dead. At this point I can start it only by pushing it, or installing a new battery which I expect will just die in a few days. The car was in an accident in March 2013 and was excellently repaired, but perhaps that repair caused the leak. My other thought was the sunroof, so I taped it closed but that did not solve my problem. (And it left me with the residue of the tape on the roof. I think you can see it in the pictures). I am VERY frustrated and no longer want to put any more time into the car, so I am hoping it can find a more patient owner. Or perhaps it will make a great parts car for anyone with a first gen MINI Cooper. Thanks for looking. Hope you can give her a new home. |

Last chance to order an R56 Mini Hardtop
Fri, 02 Aug 2013Mini will be ending custom orders of the current R56 Cooper Hardtop ahead of the retooling process for the new F56 Mini. That means owners who aren't enamored with what they've seen of the model's new look but still want a personalized version of the tossable hot hatch had best get down to their local Mini dealership and submit their order post-haste.
According to Mini enthusiast site Motoringfile, all orders must be submitted by August 28 in order to get a custom build. Orders are also locked in after that, so if you do get one of the spots, make sure you're absolutely content with the car you order. This cutoff will affect all models of the Hardtop, including the John Cooper Works model.
After August 28, owners will need to wait for the new Hardtop to arrive, which Motoringfile estimates will be in March of 2014. If you miss out on this final allocation of hardtops, all is not lost, however. Mini will still accept personalized orders on other bodystyles, which won't be replaced by F56-based models for some time.
2015 Mini Countryman getting mild facelift for NY
Mon, 07 Apr 2014Mini has introduced three generations of retro hatchback since its revival in 2001, with numerous bodystyles spun off that core model. But the Countryman has always stood apart from the rest (save the Paceman which was in turn spun off of it). The Mini crossover is bigger than the rest of the lineup, has more doors, more driven wheels and a familiar yet different look.
There's an all-new model in the works, set to share its architecture with BMW's own front-drive family. But that's still a couple of years away, so to keep the Countryman looking fresh, Mini is reportedly preparing to roll out a mildly facelifted version at the upcoming New York Auto Show.
As we're still awaiting confirmation from the automaker, few details on the updated Countryman are available at this point, but word has it that it will only include some minor cosmetic enhancements to the interior and exterior of the vehicle. Just how comprehensive those updates will be, and how many of them will be derived from the latest Mini Cooper hardtop remain to be seen, but with the NY show just a week away, it won't be long before we find out.
Mini phasing out Coupe, Roadster next year
Wed, Nov 26 2014With its previous generation, Mini went for a maximalist strategy, expanding its lineup to include seven derivatives. But with the new generation, BMW's retro Anglo-Saxon brand is shifting gears to a "superhero strategy" focusing on core models with volume sales potential rather than small niches. That, according to the latest reports, will spell the end of the Coupe and Roadster models introduced in the outgoing generation. Speaking with AutoGuide at the LA Auto Show last week, Mini USA product planning chief Patrick McKenna confirmed that both the two-seat models "will actually go out of production next year" and that "they've run their life cycle." Though we've yet to receive word on the future of the Paceman, we wouldn't hold our breath for its long-term prospects either. Under the new strategy, Mini is expected to focus more on models like the base Hardtop (now available with three or five doors) and the Countryman – which, between the two of them, account for roughly 75 percent of Mini sales, the other models slicing up the remaining quarter of the pie. Will you miss them? Will these short-lived Minis become future collectibles, or will they be soon forgotten? Have your say in Comments.
