Up for auction is my right hand drive 1988 Rover Mini Mayfair. It sports the venerable A series 1000cc engine and a 4 speed manual transmission. I've owned it for about 4 years now. I purchased it while stationed in Japan with the Navy. It's been a fun car but I just have too many projects and not enough time to drive them all! This Mini is not perfect but it's in pretty good shape. I started to restore it while stationed in Japan. Off the top of my head, I've replaced/updated the following since I've owned it (4 years) :
  • New 7.5 Gal fuel tank
  • New carpet & mats
  • Updated seats
  • Matching door panels
  • Wood dashboard
  • Black dash pads
  • Chrome grille
  • Chrome fog/spot lamps (on 2 sep switches)
  • Chrome F/R bumpers
  • Chrome headlight trim rings
  • Chrome door handles
  • Chrome fuel lid
  • Chrome number plate lamp housing
  • Chrome wipers/new blades
  • New KYB shocks
  • New front rotors/pads
  • New clutch slave cylinder
  • New 70 amp alternator
  • New battery
  • New fuel pump
  • 11 Blade "export" fan (to aid in cooling)
  • New fuse box
  • New fuel sender
  • New heater valve
  • Adjuster for steering column (a necessity!!)
  • Points ignition replaced with maintenance free electronic ignition (The only time the Mini left me stranded was a faulty set of points)
  • Exhaust replaced with a S/S center exit catback
Those are the big items. There are some misc seals, bushings and other small parts I have receipts for. I will gladly provide the buyer with copies of all my receipts.

Classic Minis' are not speed demons. However, you'll find they are able to merge with traffic just fine. I've done a full tune up to include a valve adjustment. The carburetor has also been rebuilt and I fitted a fuel filter (they never had one out of the factory!). On brisk days, she'll require you to pull the manual choke knob. She has always fired right up and once warmed up, acceleration is smooth without any stumbling. Compression is a solid 175-180 PSI across all four cylinders. The transmission shifts smoothly without any grinding or drama. Clutch is light without any slipping or chattering.

So now that I've told you the good news, how about the bad news? In the interest of full disclosure, there are a few small spots of rust here and there. The only cancerous section is at the bottom of the passenger door. A new (OEM) door skin can be sourced from Mini Spares for $95. The blue paint is a little faded but keep in mind that it's a 25 year old Rover. The spot and fog lamps (Wipac) that I added are already starting to get some surface rust on the backs of them. There's no radio, I'm hoping that's not a deal breaker. The steering wheel in the car is a POS "knockoff" Nardi but I am including a quality replacement. The tires are well past their prime but I'm sure they'll get you to where you're going. Just as long as when you get there, you order some tires :). Last but not least, this particular Mini was not optioned with Air Conditioning. Yes, indeed that does suck, but there are some kits out there to retrofit A/C if you gotta have it.

Unlike many of the other "Gray Market" cars you see for sale; my Mini is a 100% "legal citizen" of the US. I followed the rules and my vehicle was imported the way it's supposed to be done. In order for a vehicle to be legally imported, NHTSA HS-7 and EPA 3520-1 forms have to be filed UPON ENTRY. This is no clause that "grandfathers" older vehicles, this paperwork MUST follow the car. The Department of Homeland Security or US Customs office can request the owner provide proof that the vehicle was legally imported at any time. If you can't produce the documentation within a reasonable amount of time, an illegally imported vehicle can/will be seized. The Feds can be ridiculous about this and they've already crushed a few Skylines and Range Rovers that were not imported properly. The documentation that accompanies my Mini will keep the Feds happy and the car in your possession. Along with the aforementioned paperwork, I have a clear assignable Maryland title. It's currently registered in MD and emissions exempt. I don't daily drive it but I do take it to work on sunny days. It turns a lot of heads, especially when you're spotted driving from the "wrong" side of the car. :)

Included in the sale is an almost new leather Motolita steering wheel. A hub boss would need to be acquired from Motolita in order to fit it. I also have a set of brand new Rover "Sport Pack" wheel flares (front/rear). These are not the cheap fiberglass ones but the real urethane flares. They would look great with a set of 13x7 Panasport/Minilite wheels. I've also got a bunch of smaller spare parts (chrome window trim, etc) that I will include with the sale. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Rivian R1T, Mini Cooper Electric owners happiest with their EVs

Tue, Feb 28 2023

The J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study is out, and there's change at the top. With the swelling adoption of electric vehicles in the U.S. over in the past two years especially, the third year of the EVX study changes focus to first-time EV buyers. Those two factors encouraged change at the top of both premium and mass-market segments. Among premium EVs, the Rivian R1T pickup scored overall victory in its first year of eligibility with a satisfaction score of 794 out of 1,000. The Tesla Model 3 takes second place with 759 points. Tesla had won the top two premium spots in the study in 2021 and in 2022. The average score in the premium segment was 756. The Tesla Model Y (754), Audi E-Tron (735), and Polestar 2 (724) filled out the list of the five eligible models this year. Among the ten eligible mass-market vehicles, the Mini Cooper Electric nabbed the overall win by scoring 782. The Kia EV6 came second with 762 points, keeping Kia in the top two; the Kia Niro EV won the mass-market segment the previous two years. The Ford Mustang Mach-E (742), Hyundai Ioniq 5 (738), and Volkswagen ID.4 (735) completed the top five, the Niro EV (733) in sixth. All were above the segment average of 730. The four models fell below the segment average were the Ford F-150 Lightning (723), Chevrolet Bolt EUV (716), Chevrolet Bolt (711), and Nissan Leaf (698). How are the scores derived? J.D. Power worked with EV app maker and research firm PlugShare to get owner responses in ten areas: accuracy of stated battery range; availability of public charging stations; battery range; cost of ownership; driving enjoyment; ease of charging at home; interior and exterior styling; safety and technology features; service experience; and vehicle quality and reliability. Brent Gruber, executive director of the EV practice at J.D. Power, said, "Recent vehicle launches from both new brands and traditional automakers have had a profound effect on what factors are most important in the ownership experience. Today’s EV owners are looking for quality, reliability, driving enjoyment, safety and technology features." The Mini, in fact, scored highest of any premium and mass-market EV in the studyÂ’s highest-weighted index factor, quality and reliability.

2021 Mini lineup includes some more equipment and some lower prices

Sun, Jun 14 2020

Mini has played the unusual triple for its 2021 model-year lineup: Design revisions, more equipment, and lower prices on a number of models. Two full-body exterior colors, Emerald Gray Metallic and Melting Silver Metallic, won't make the new year. After a hiatus, the six-speed manual transmission returns on eight trims from the Cooper two-door hardtop to the front-wheel drive Cooper S Clubman. It's a third shifting possibility alongside the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and the eight-speed Steptronic automatic. The hardtops and convertibles were refreshed for last year, so they'll carry on with that momentum. One feature change comes to the mid-grade Signature Trim, which can add 6.5-inch touchscreen nav and Apple CarPlay, and a digital instrument cluster as options. The top Iconic trim makes the digital cluster standard. The Oxford Edition trim holds the line at $19,750 before an $850 destination fee, for a total of $20,600, same as 2020. Mini's made the Oxford available to everyone, not only the recent students and military personnel that began as the exclusive buyer base. Not only are there no price increases among the hardtop and convertible ranges, seven models get $1,000 price reductions. Pricing for 2021 and the difference compared to 2020 is: Hardtop 2 Door Oxford Edition: $20,600 (No change) Cooper: $23,250 ($1,000 lower) Cooper S: $27,250 ($1,000 lower) Cooper SE: $30,750 (No change) John Cooper Works: $33,250 ($1,000 lower) John Cooper Works GP: $45,750 Hardtop 4 Door Oxford Edition: $21,600 (No change) Cooper: $24,250 ($1,000 lower) Cooper S: $28,250 ($1,000 lower) Convertible Cooper: $28,250 ($1,000 lower) Cooper S: $32,250 ($1,000 lower) Sidewalk Edition: $39,250 John Cooper Works: $39,250 (No change) The Clubman got a makeover for this year plus a more powerful John Cooper Works Clubman with 301 horsepower. The sole change here is a 6.5-inch touchscreen navigation unit included on the middle Signature trim. Prices for the 2021 Clubman are: S: $30,750 ($1,000 lower) S ALL4: $33,750 (No change) John Cooper Works ALL4: $40,350 ($100 higher) The big-selling Countryman does almost 40% of U.S. Mini business. Outside come redesigned LED headlights, new Union Jack taillights, LED fog lights on the base Cooper and Cooper S, and piano black trim in places like the light frames and door handles.
