I have to say that this is perhaps one of the most original, unmolested examples of a MGB GT that you are likely to find. I have owned many British car over the years, and I every time I look at this car, it continues to fascinate me. To see a car that has been lovingly cared and documented for 40+ years is quite remarkable. The car has never been owned by a teenager or a careless owner throughout its history. Every transaction and repair has been documented.

I know you will be able to find a MGB GT for cheaper, but that is not why you are here, right? Who wants a car that has lived in salt or has been banged around the high school parking lot? Who wants a car that has had rocker panels, quarter panels, etc replaced? Competent body shops are few in number today and fewer still have the ability to correctly repair 40 year British autos. Those that can will charge a premium to do the job right. However, a car is only original once! The shutlines, panel gaps, and spot welds show that this is original, rust free car. Sure there a few very small dings and paint chips, but how will your new car look after 40 years in Los Angeles? The car cosmetically presents extremely well, and a hard weekends work of detailing and buffing will do wonders.

The car runs and drives well throughout the neighborhood, but I don't have the nerve to drive on the LA freeways on 30+ year old tires and tubes! The brake system has been refreshed with new brake hoses, calipers, and wheel cylinders. The SU HS4 carbs have received equal attention with new jets, needles, springs, gaskets and throttle shafts. The four speed non-overdrive transmission shifts well in all gears with no grinding or funny noises. A new water pump, hoses, thermostat, and radiator flush have ensured everything is running cool. An engine compression test shows impressive numbers with little variance from cylinder to cylinder.

I know that once this car is gone I will regret it. I will probably never see such an example again. Restored trailer queens are nice, but the original vibe of this car impresses everyone who sees it. Serious inquiries only please, as I want the car to go an enthusiast who will preserve or improve upon this car.

Please don't bid if you think the car is "cute" or will give it your high schooler as a graduation present. It has survived this long, so I don't want it to sit in your driveway or backyard under a blue tarp, while you "get around to it."

You are bidding on a 40 year old automobile. You cannot assume that this will function like a new Toyota or Honda. I do my best to describe any faults or shortcomings that I know about. Please ask me questions before bidding!

The car features its original issue six digit California blue plate.

Included documentation show that this was the original plate placed onto the car at it purchase at the dealership. Included are every DMV registration card since purchase.

Build Date: December 1969

VIN: GHD5UA195764G

Year Model: 1970

Specification: Federal

The bonnet shows the original chalked VIN from the assembly line.

"195764"

Extensive documentation since day of purchase. Incredible to find this much provenance on any car, much less a 44 year MGB!

  • Original purchase contract: May 15, 1970
  • Drivers Manual
  • Passport to Service
  • DMV Registration Cards
  • Receipts of service and repair
  • Copy of cashiers check for purchase!
  • Original Wilmot Breeden/Union keys for ignition, doors, and hatch

Original date coded seat belts:

September 1969

All glass in the car reflects 1969 build dates.

This side glass indicates an October-December 1969 construction.

(Dot over "X" in Triplex and over "D" in Toughened)

Spare wears original Dunlop SP68 radial ply tire date coded to 1969 as well.

It appears to have never been used at all.

Original tool roll showing little wear.

Lead hammer shows minor impacts from routine wheel nut tightening.

  • Vinyl covered horsehair bag
  • Factory jack
  • Octagon wrench
  • Lead Hammer

Well preserved early 1970s Southern California AAA decal on front windscreen.

Original TEX door and fender mirrors with no pitting or corrosion.

Wire wheels are serviceable.

A nice cleaning and respray and they would look very nice.

The chrome wheel nuts don't show marring from overzealous hammering or tightening.

The tires and tubes are over 30 years old and yet remarkably hold air great with no leaking.

However, I strongly suggest that you change them at the earliest convenience if you plan on driving any long distance for safety's sake.

Factory "fish mouth" grille as fitted to 1970 to 1972 MGBs.

Bumpers and overriders are in nice condition with no rust.

1970 model year only "split bumpers" are in very nice condition.

Rear quarters completely rust free.

Passenger side shown.

Original spot welds are seen.

Spots are thin spots in paint.

Driver side rear quarter equally nice.

Original spot welds are seen.

Rockers are equally rust free.

Note the factory spot welds and gaps in panel fit.

Small scrape on passenger rocker panel.

You only notice it from down below.

Undersides of doors show no rust at the lips or drain holes.

Jacking points solid.

Floor pans solid and corrosion free.

Only minor surface rust to be found.

Attachment points to leaf springs and shackles are solid with only very minor surface rust (more like dust!).

Another view of the floor from below.

Exhaust system is in fine order with no holes.

Muffler appears to be almost new, with the remains of a sticker flaking off.

Intermediate muffler shows speed hump dings.

This is the only rust damage I could find on the car and is fairly common on all MGBs.

The battery box trays on both are rusted badly on the bottom. This is the result of 40 years of battery acid. A bummer but it is simply angle iron portion of the box for the most part.

A plastic battery box now occupies the passenger side as the car has been converted to a new single 12 volt battery.

Trunk floor is in great condition.

No rust to be found!

Rear deck recovered with Moss moulded carpet kit.

Deck boards are rot free and have no splits or breaks.

Period Bowman AM/FM radio that is functional.

Currently disconnected since the speakers in the car are dry rotted.

The only modification to the interior is the presence of these "Craig by Pioneer" metal grilled speakers on the rear sail panels.

They appear to be Craig 9405 speakers circa 1971. The speakers are dry rotted, but NOS units can be found on Ebay from time to time.

Period correct Lucas sealed beam headlamps appear to be original issue and are fully functional.

Front seats have been completely rebuilt with new foams, diaphragms, and correct seat covers and headrests from Moss.

Original door cards and pulls.

Window cranks are a period aftermarket accessory. I left them on since they work well and to present the car as it was in the 1970s.

Door caps were tattered so they were recovered with the correct material from Moss.

Tidy interior presents well with a freshly installed top of the line moulded carpet kit from Moss ($619 currently).

I have the original rubber mats that were originally in the foot wells and under the seats. If you want them I will include them.

Factory ashtray is included, but not installed. I will leave that to the discretion of the next owner.

One small crack and lift on the top of the dash (easily repaired).

Original steering wheel shows some age checking on the grip.

I would suggest having it wrapped with a leather cover to smarten it up.

New shift knob, gaiter, and embellishment ring.

I will include the original shift knob.

Original BMC crested seat belt buckles.

Rear seat is original and in very good condition.

All gauges and switches are functional, with the exception of the brake test switch.

Mileage can be confirmed through the immense documentation included.

Normal oil pressure at idle.

Engine bay is as it was when it left the factory.

Aside from a few worm clamps on hoses, it is highly original and unmodified.

One of the final year models having the desirable SU HS4 carburetors.

Original AUD 405 HS4 carbs as fitted to 1970 MGBs.

Carbs refreshed with new jets, needles, springs, throttle shafts and gaskets.

All emission equipment intact and functional.

High compression engine. Engine code "H"

Factory wiring untouched by hacks or bodging!

Vintage Lucas 35A fuses are correct to the period. More evidence of high integrity of the wiring harness.
