1968 Mercury Monterey, Mechanically Rebuilt And A Great Daily Driver. on 2040-cars
Delaware, Ohio, United States
Up for sale is my 1968 Mercury Monterey, 4 door. This is originally a California car that is equipped with a 390 engine, C6 automatic transmission, dual exhaust, PS, PB, and a trailer hitch. I owned this car back around 2001 when I had the transmission and heads rebuilt, but got it back about a years ago to get it back into daily driver condition. I currently drive the car around 80 miles a day and it is a great cruiser. Only issue I've found with that is there is an exhaust manifold leak that needs the gasket replaced. I've installed many new parts to make it mechanically sound, only real issue is cosmetic. Here is a list of parts installed in the last year:
Full suspension rebuild (shocks, springs, bushings, and ball joints) Full steering rebuild (PS pump, hoses, rag joint, steering gear box, all tie rods with sleeves, and idler arm) Cooling system upgrade (aluminum radiator, high flow water pump, and hoses) Brake system rebuild and upgrade (rear disk brakes, all new calipers, rotors, pads, hard brake lines paired with steel braided flex lines, and adjustable proportioning valve) Tune up (plugs, wires, and cap) Distributor vacuum advance (distributor also has a Mallory pointless system installed in 2001) Holley 4 barrel carburetor Melling HV oil pump Summit oil pan One wire altermator Belts Retrosound stereo (needs trim piece, hooked up to replacement rear speakers and 10" subs) New gauges (oil, water temp, voltage, and tachometer) Newer tires I've included everything I can remember, but I'm sure there's some that I have forgotten. This is an original AC car, but the compressor and some other parts are missing. The HVAC has some vacuum lines unhooked, so it currently has a new heater control valve installed to turn off the heat in the summer.I have the original shop manual that is pretty beat up but includes any information you need for working on the car. The interior is clean with no seat tares, but the carpet is pretty worn out. I'll answer any questions you have about the car. It is an older car so of course it has its quirks (example, only passenger side door will unlock with key, but new sets are readily available), so it is sold as is. To sum it up: Pros, mechanically sound and solid body; Cons, some cosmetic issues and HVAC needs attention. |

Ford finally issues recall for 230K minivans over rust problems
Sun, 10 Mar 2013The rust issue in the rear wheel wells of 2004-2007 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans has finally led to a recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began an investigation into the matter in 2011, said investigation being upgraded to an engineering analysis a year later while NHTSA tried to figure out how many model years should be included in the assessment.
Ford has decided to recall all of the 230,000 minivans potentially affected, namely those sold in salt-belt states and countries like Canada. The excess rust in the rear wheel wells was also able to prevent the third-row seats from locking to the floor of the minivan. To repair the problem, owners can take their minivans to dealers, and the dealers will place new panels in the wheel wells, replace the third-row seat mounting brackets and relocate the latches to an area away from any corrosion.
Ford says it will begin notifying owners during the last week of March.
Junkyard Gem: 1970 Mercury Cougar
Tue, Oct 10 2017The plot of the Mercury Cougar story took a lot of strange twists and turns during its 35 or so years, from ponycar to immense luxobarge to family sedan to station wagon to Integra competitor. Examples of the first Cougar generation are nearly extinct in American wrecking yards, so I was excited to spot this one in Denver. Lest you shed any tears over this car going to the crusher, know that it was suffering from the ravenous teeth of the Rust Monster long before it got here. The 1967-1970 Cougar was based on the Mustang platform of the same era, and so it was a sleeker and quicker cat than its successors. Still, the longer wheelbase, extra equipment and all the cool-looking bodywork added some heft; the 1970 Mustang hardtop with V8 scaled in at 2,923 pounds, while the 1970 Cougar weighed 3,307 pounds. The current Ford Focus would fit just between those two weights. There was also a mid-cycle refresh in that era, with the '67-'68 and '69-'70 having different exterior styling and interiors. The '69 and '70 had different front end styling as well, with the latter re-adopting the vertical grille slats featured on the earlier model years. The '69 has horizontal slats. The drivetrain and just about everything else of value has been shorn from this car, perhaps before it arrived in this yard. In 1970, a bewildering assortment of V8 engines was available in the Cougar, including a Boss 302, two completely different 351s, and a 335-horse Cobra Jet 428. The base engine was a 351 Windsor making 250 gross horsepower. Since car rooftops mostly don't rust, why would someone cut out this one? Sheet metal needed for patching a leaky shed roof, perhaps? This 2005-2006 Denver Nuggets window sticker indicates that the car was on the street (probably) as recently as 11 years ago. This content is hosted by a third party. The AM37 is literally the Aston Martin of boats
Wed, Sep 28 2016While sports car companies such as Porsche and Lamborghini are looking to SUVs to expand their offerings, Aston Martin has taken a page from Mercedes and designed a boat. Specifically, it's a 37-foot powerboat appropriately named the AM37. The boat was developed with help from Mulder Design and Quintessence Yachts, and is available in two different versions, both of which should the aquatic equivalent of Aston Martin performance. The standard AM37 is available with two different pairs of engines from Mercury, either 370-horsepower diesel engines or 450-horsepower gas engines. If that's not enough, Aston also offers the AM37S, which comes with a pair of 520-horsepower gasoline Mercury engines. Like road-going Astons, this boat is absolutely gorgeous. The lines are simple, crisp and clean. It features a beautiful wood deck, and an impressive double-curved, single-piece glass windshield. And if you get tired of the sun, the AM37 features a powered, carbon fiber bimini top. The interior completes the package with a carbon fiber dashboard, lots of leather and polished steering wheel, throttle and joystick. It's also incredibly well-equipped with seating for eight, air conditioning, mood lighting, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, a bed that folds out from the table, and even a bathroom. Aston Martin didn't release pricing or availability for the AM37. However, we suspect that if you really want this boat and have the means, pricing doesn't matter, and you're probably willing to wait.
