You are looking at what is undoubtedly the rarest and most loaded 1970 Mercury Cyclone GT ever made. Specially ordered and built for Ford Motor Company in Sept of 1969. Ordered to room 247 FDGO 17101 Rotundra Dr Dearborn MI 48121 on 8-13-1969. Tested from 9-20-1969 until 10-29-1969 and then released into the FORD Pool and purchased the same day most likely by the same engineer that placed the order. A common practice back in the day. After Ford built the first cars by hand they would start up the line and build cars to test and to show. This is one of the cars ordered in for option testing. Absolutely loaded with rare options Not found on the majority of it's siblings. This 70 Cyclone GT has the rarest of the rare Factory Sunroof option. One of only TEN cars to get the pwr sunroof option in All of 1970's production! Thats less than 1/10th of 1% of the Cyclone GT's received this sunroof! At a cost of $375 for the sunroof and a mandatory $99 vinyl top it was an extremely expensive option up charge at $474. The first being the FORD engineer from 1969-1974. It sat garaged in 1999-2014 with plans to restore it with the brakes, exhaust and radiator redone at that time. Another 1970 351c 4 speed car overtook his intentions and he slowly restored that car over the next many years. Realizing he wasn't going to get around to it after his other GT was done he sold it to me. I had looked at the car in 1999 and was too slow to act the first time and lost out. Right after I purchased this car I was hit with a nasty tax bill due to a mistake made by my tax man. That and the fact that I have two others cars I'm already working on is forcing my hand to let go of this car even though I really don't want to. I can well afford to keep it but now it will sit on the side lines waiting it's turn and I had planned to start on the car immediately. Nothing on this car scares me and I don't like body work and don't purchase cars that have any structural issues. I would replace the doors and fenders with clean straight ones as it is easier imop than fixing the dents. The quarters will need patched but the inner wheel wells are nice and so are the drop downs. Floor will need a small patch piece on both sides where the floor comes up in the front of the seats. But the rest of the floors are solid, toe boards floor pan and they show original paint on them... This was a common problem and there is a specific patch piece made for that area (3''x5''area). It rained hard for a day and a half when I went to look at it and towed it home. I was very impressed that the car was Completely dry inside. A testament to it being stored indoors all that time. I can also help in locating any parts you need as I have owned 17 of these cars over the years. The gauge dash dash pad is very nice and so is the rest of the interior. Someone did remove the am/fm radio but there was an am one in the trunk. I figured he put it in his other Cyclone and offered to buy it if he had it but he said he didn't have it. Also missing was the jack in the rear. I will assist with shipping that you arrange but the car must be paid if full before time of pickup and funds cleared. Vehicle must be paid for in 7 days of auctions end with a $500 deposit due at auctions end. Thats more than enough time and I can store the car for $70 a month inside heated and air conditioned storage from May-1-2014 until you come get it. You have free storage until April 30th 2014 to pick it up. But you must pay for 3 months at a time with next bill due before the end of the first three months if you need to store it longer. This is not my storage facility but I'm friends with the owner and it is a safe secure business. Any unused Full month will be refunded. The car will not be released if storage fees are unpaid. Junkyard Gem: 1979 Mercury Marquis 2-Door Sedan
Sun, Jul 25 2021As the creator of the now-much-overused term "Malaise Era" (which I say started in 1973 and ended in 1983, full stop), I have a certain affection for the big two-door Detroit cars of the late 1970s. When such a car is built on the very first model year of Ford's long-lived Panther platform and I find one in a junkyard, I must document it. The 1979 Mercury Marquis is such a car, and this one was found in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service yard last month. Since Ford built the Grand Marquis all the way through the demise of the Panther platform— and Mercury itself— in 2011, it's easy for us to forget that the model name started out as just the plain old Marquis, back in the 1967 model year, with the Grand appellation used for the car's top trim level. While today's Junkyard Gem has some of the features of the Grand Marquis and Marquis Brougham trim levels for 1979 (notably the padded vinyl landau roof and power windows), it lacks the huge chrome lower-body moldings of those cars. Instead, it's a regular Marquis 2-door sedan with a big load of expensive options. That landau roof has suffered greatly from its decades beneath the vinyl-disintegrating California sun. The Panther platform was a big technological upgrade from the late-1950s-vintage chassis technology of full-sized Fords of the 1960s and 1970s, and it stayed in front-line service in much the same form through 2011. Though its ride and handling were much improved, the 1979 Marquis was quite a bit smaller than its predecessors, and that caused some grumbling among Mercury shoppers. Some ham-handed junkyard shoppers really tore up the interior of this car while extracting a few bits and pieces, but we can still admire the Pine Green pleather of the glorious Twin Comfort Lounge front seats. You had two engine choices when buying a new '79 Marquis: the base 302-cubic-inch (5.0-liter) Windsor V8 making 129 horsepower or the optional 351-cubic-inch (5.8-liter) Windsor V8 rated at 138 horsepower. This one appears to be the 351, the same engine as had been swapped into the pizza-delivery Mercury I drove in the middle 1980s. New cars sold in California around this time had these giant emissions-numbers stickers on the side glass. Later, they went on the underside of the hood.
NHTSA and Ford investigating steering issues in Crown Vic, Grand Marquis and Marauder
Fri, 11 Jul 2014There may be more steering woes for the Ford Crown Victoria. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a preliminary evaluation into the Crown Vic and Mercury Grand Marquis from the 2004 to 2007 model years and the Mercury Marauder for the 2004 and 2005 model years because the steering shaft can jam. The issue could potentially affect an estimated 500,000 vehicles.
According to the regulator, there is a possibility that the driver's side heat shield for the exhaust manifold can rust, dislodge, and then wedge into the steering shaft. If this occurs, it leads to a situation where the driver can no longer control the car.
NHTSA has received five complaints of this happening, including one alleged case with an injury. In that situation, the car was driving onto the highway, lost control and rolled over. One occupant was hurt in the accident.
Ford recalling 450,000 Fusion, Mercury Milan sedans
Tue, Nov 24 2015Ford has announced a pair of recalls, and both are critical safety issues. The exponentially larger of the two recall campaigns affects over 450,000 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans manufactured at the Hermosillo plant between July 21, 2008, and March 4, 2011. The canister purge valve in the fuel tank could malfunction and could cause the top of the tank to crack and leak fuel. That could cause a fire, although Ford "is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires" resulting from the issue. Affected vehicles will have their ECU software updated and their fuel tanks inspected for potential replacement. The company estimates there are 411,205 affected units in the United States (and its federalized territories), plus another 33,605 in Canada, and 7,055 in Mexico. The second recall affects 13 F-650 trucks. The column shifter's park position mechanism may fracture and let the truck roll away unexpectedly. Those 2016 models built in Ohio between July 29 and September 3, 2015 are all located in the US. Fixing the problem will require replacing the steering column and reconfiguring the instrument panel. Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to these conditions. Some of these vehicles might have a canister purge valve that does not work properly, causing internal pressure changes inside the fuel tank. Repeated pressure changes inside the tank could result in a crack on the top of the tank, possibly allowing fuel to leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can lead to a fire. Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to this condition. Affected vehicles include certain 2010-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant from July 21, 2008 through March 4, 2011.
