This is a nice Cougar XR7 convertible, 351 Cleveland 2 barrel, automatic, power steering, power disc brakes, and a/c, with a lot of the restoration already done. I’ve been restoring Cougars and Mustangs for over 20 years, I’ve had this car for about 2 years. I bought it for my wife to drive on sunny days but we’ve since bought another newer convertible so it needs to go. I’ve worked on it, off and on, over that time between other projects. It is now a nice clean driver. Here are some of the things done to the car since I’ve owned it. Replaced the front right floor pan, both rear seat floor pans. The rest of the floor including the inner rockers were good. While doing the floors, I discovered the cowl was rusted through in two places so we removed the entire upper cowl, repaired with a donor car’s sheetmetal, treated with Por 15 and reassembled. Pictures of this work available to serious bidders. While the heater assembly was out, it was disassembled and all foam seals replaced. Front bumper is a new rechrome. The engine seemed to run fine but had an oil leak. Determined it was the intake manifold rear gasket so we pulled intake and replaced gasket. While the intake was off, noticed how clean the engine was. Pulled valve covers and it was just as clean. I have pictures of valley area and under rocker covers upon request. Took compression test, found all cylinders to be between 140 and 150 pounds. The car shows actual mileage as 88,3XX, My suspicion is the motor has been rebuilt. The carb should probably be redone, it does not run smooth when you first start it cold. It accelerates just fine but idles rough. Once warmed up it seems fine. Transmission seems to shift fine, and the car handles well, rides nice, no vibrations of any kind. It’s smooth as can be at 70 mph going down the highway. Brakes are about 70% all the way around, front end suspension seems tight, steering works fine. New carpet, seats are good with no bad seams. Needs a sound system, there is a correct AM/FM radio in the dash, but it needs door speakers. Body is very straight. Has some filler in lower areas, paint is NEW, color is Ford Wimbleton White. Paint shines nice. This car was originally Grabber Lime Green with dark green leather interior, one of only 22 cougar convertibles with that color combo. Whoever changed the color took the time to paint all the undersides and door jambs correctly. Interior appears to be genuine black, not dyed. Convertible top is NEW including the glass rear window and pads. Front and rear rails and torque boxes look to be fine. Trunk floor seems solid. Overall, the car is a very nice driver. It could use some detailing here and there, but the basic car is good looking, straight, very complete and should be a very reliable fun car. This car is being sold as-is, where-is and comes with no warranty expressed or implied. Please ask any questions, I’ll be happy to answer asap. Car is offered for sale locally so I retain the right to end the auction at any time. I can help with loading the car, but buyer is responsible for all arrangements. I require a $500 deposit via Paypal within 3 days of auction end, the remainder in cash or bank wire before car will be released. I have clear opened title in hand. Please do not bid if you have less than 5 positive feedbacks, without contacting me first, or I may cancel your bid. The reserve will not be disclosed. Thank you for looking. |

NHTSA closes probes on Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey
Wed, 09 Jan 2013The Detroit News reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has officially closed its investigations into 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2004-2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey models. The separate probes found no issues that pose safety concerns. NHTSA began investigating certain Grand Cherokee SUVs over complaints that power steering hoses could detach during operation, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicle fire. Of the 24 reports of failure, none alleged smoke or fire in the engine bay, and Chrysler has since modified the power steering cooler assembly to reduce the likelihood of the failure.
Meanwhile, certain Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey vehicles garnered a government probe after receiving complaints that the models were equipped with faulty scissor jacks. The agency had received six reports of the jacks failing or causing injuries, including one incident that resulted in a fatality. But NHTSA says the jack failure rate is similar to those found in other vehicles. In those six cases, the government agency found the jacks were being used for something other than changing a tire, and investigators could not determine whether the emergency brake was set or the rear tires were properly chocked.
Ford recalls 382k vehicles across six campaigns
Wed, Sep 30 2015Ford needs to repair a total of 381,633 vehicles in North America across six newly announced campaigns, including five safety recalls and one compliance recall. By far the largest of these campaigns covers the 342,271 examples of the 1998-2003 Windstar to double check an earlier recall repair. Among these, 283,413 are in the US and 58,858 are in Canada. The combination of corrosion and stress can cause cracks in the rear axle and eventually lead to the part to snap completely. The company reports a small number of accidents might be connected to this, but there are no injuries. The minivans were recalled for this issue back in 2010, and it was investigated by NHTSA. According to Ford's latest announcement, the reinforcement brackets on some of these models might not have been installed correctly. This time, dealers will perform an inspection. Minivans with incorrectly installed brackets will get a new rear axle. The rest of the owners will be offered a deal to replace the part at a reduced cost. The next largest campaign covers 36,857 examples of the 2015 F-150 to fix a problem with the adaptive cruise control. Specifically, there are 33,481 affected trucks in the US, and 3,376 in Canada. According to Ford, "when passing a large, highly reflective truck" the radar in the system can misidentify a semi as being in the same lane as the pickup. The collision warning system would then activate, slowing the F-150. There's one report of an accident with this happening but no injuries. The fix is simply an update to the adaptive cruise control module software. Ford also has a recall for 1,477 examples of its 2016 F-53 and F-59 stripped chassis models, and they're all located in the US. A manufacturing issue might allow the trucks to shift into reverse without the driver first applying the brakes. There are no reports of any accidents from this, though. To repair the problem, the models get a new transmission shift control bracket and an adjustment to the shift cable. The Blue Oval's safety compliance recall covers 708 examples of the 2016 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, including 658 of them in the US, 28 in Canada, and 22 in Mexico. On these models, a manufacturing problem with the fuel tank could allow it to crack in a crash, which isn't allowed under federal rules. There are no reports of accidents, injuries or fires. The fix will be a new fuel tank for all of them. The company is also repairing 251 units of the 2015 Taurus and Lincoln MKS, plus the 2016 Explorer.
Translogic drives wood-burning Mercury Beaver XR-7
Sun, 31 Jul 2011You read the title right, we're talking about the Mercury Beaver XR-7. No, Mercury never officially built a car called the beaver. This is the brainchild of upstate New Yorker Chip Beam, who owns and operates Beaver Energy, LLC. It runs on gases created by wood pellets fermented in a 2,400-degree furnace and fed to a supercharged Ford 4.6-liter V8.
By all accounts, it gets down the road just fine, and has pretty close to full power. The best part is, you can grow the fuel yourself and avoid patronizing big oil, if that's your thing. The only drawback that we can see to the Mercury Beaver XR-7 is the PVC pipe jungle occupying the space that would be the trunk under normal circumstances.
Still, if you're willing to smell like a mountain man and look like a bad Back to the Future knockoff, this ride is right up your alley. Click past the jump to see Translogic's take on this modified Merc.
