This Super Rare Ford Prototype Factory Test Car, a 1969 Cougar XR7, 428 4-speed with 350 posi. With Only 32 units built out of 100,185 Cougars with a 4/speeds coded.. made for the year 1969. Only 5 Cougars were made with this Rare paint / trim codes. This is the Only One 428CJ Cougar 1 of 1 built with the  Gorgeous gold metallic paint with white leather interior and green tinted glass. This car was ordered from the Home Office Reserve and built -Released--sold the same date as a Pilot Test car for Mercury. As you know, most prototype test cars get destroyed after testing. This one got away. After testing it went to the Ford Resale lot for employee purchasing. The Marti Report and the Original Ford invoice confirms this and shows it went to the Ford Pilot Plant manufacturing to the garage. This plain Jane XR7 had no vinyl top or markings (a sleeper) with the 428 CJ 4-speed. This gold / white 428 CJ Cougar made with the options of 428 4-speed with 350 posi, ps, pb, rare power ventilation (1 of 850), am/fm stereo radio, console, and disk brakes. A two year Very Detailed restoration to follow to original Ford specifications. Special thanks to Bob Perkins of Wisconsin for the information and consulting in the restoration process for this like new condition Auto. The Fresh two year restoration, With only test miles. The rotisserie restored vehicle was completely disassembled, Components being completely restored or rebuilt or replaced, stripped of all paint and sand blasted, and ground up restored, using Ford parts when possible. The Cougar was re-painted completely apart in original gold metallic paint with clear coat and sanded and buffed to a laser straight mirror finish ( expensive paint job). The drive train was completely rebuilt as well as other components and painted to all factory original specifications. All trim on the car is NOS - new - re-plated to better than original Ford. Approximately $6,500 has been spent on trim.. NOS Front and Rear Bumpers.. and re-plating including $2,500 just to re-plate the complete grille. The interior of the XR7 a complete custom original specification design all s) leather interior was made in white ,as soft as a babys bottom. Absolutely stunning interior !! All new interior consists of replacing or refinishing ..headliner, seats, carpet, trim, chrome metal or plastic re-plated, and new refinishing steering wheel and console with all new wood grain inserts. Excellent original gauges and dash pad completed the interior. The car has 95 % matching casting codes and date codes of the drive train throughout the car. Replaced windshield, tires, brakes, shocks, suspension, and aluminized exhaust system for the stagger shock setup. The only change to the vehicle was with 1970 Cougar side glass and added an electronic ignition. The 428 Cobra jet engine was rebuilt 30 Over bore ..10/10 crank with correct date casting codes block-heads w/ ss valves -aluminum PI intake-distributor-carburetor-water pump-exhaust manifold and bell housing. Trans is rebuilt, C9 code, big in and out shaft, with a 11.5 center force clutch set up. Rear end Rebuilt - N case, date coded with new 350 gears-clutches. You can’t find original car and Restore it to duplicate this car for the time and money spent and what it’s being sold for, a very reasonable price. I have a number of cars that I’m trying to finish and can’t keep them all. A very beautiful, Detailed, Execution Restoration as you can see. Not many Cougar 428 cars were built and few remain. Only 504 428CJ Cougars were built in 69 and very few ( 32 ) in the code came with 4 - speeds, the rare N case posi units. Curtain officially comes down on Mercury as dealers remove signage

The process of shutting down the Mercury is complete. Ford officially made the decision to close its mid-level brand in June of 2010. In the months that followed, Ford offered its dealers money to stop selling the cars, with production shutting down in September. The last Mercury, a Mariner, rolled off the assembly line in the beginning of October and former spokesperson Jill Wagner said her good-byes to both the car and her job. Now the last piece of the brand has come down as dealers are removing any and all Mercury signage from their lots.

Junkyard Gem: 1973 Mercury Montego MX Brougham Sawzall Convertible Edition

You know how it goes— the weather is warm, you want to do some top-down driving, and you lack a proper convertible... but you do have a hooptie Detroit car on one side of the garage and a big ol' Sawzall on the other. Put the two together and you have a Sawzall Convertible, which generally lasts for about one summer before it gets scrapped. Here's a fine example of such a car, photographed in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service junkyard. Most Sawzall Convertibles (yes, it should be called a roadster, but nobody does that) have raw, ragged metal edges, or maybe duct tape over the stumps of the amputated pillars, but someone went to the trouble to weld nice smooth metal covers over the hackage on this one. The windshield is gone. Instead, the windshield frame is ringed by tongue depressors held in place by gooey roofing tar. No, we don't know why. The Montego MX Brougham was a hot-selling personal luxury coupe in its day, selling for $3,041 in 1973. That's just under $17,000 in 2017 dollars. It must have been fun, cruising this thing on Bay Area streets with no roof and a rattle-can spray-bomb job. This one has the optional 400-cubic-inch V8 engine, rated at 171 horsepower. Junkyard Gem: 1981 Mercury Cougar XR-7

The story of the Mercury Cougar involves more plot twists and unexpected digressions than that of just about any other Detroit car, with successive Cougar generations based on the Ford Mustang (1967-1973), the Ford Torino and/or Thunderbird (1974-1979), various Fox Fords including the Thunderbird (1980-1988), the MN12 Thunderbird/Lincoln Mark VIII (1989-1997), and the Ford Mondeo (1999-2002). There were wagon and sedan Cougars for brief periods, just to confuse everybody, and the rakish XR-7 Cougars sometimes lived on different platforms from their ordinary non-XR-7 counterparts. I think the Late Malaise Era Fox XR-7s are among the most interesting of the bunch, so I was quite excited to spot this tan-over-gold '81 in a Denver yard. I tried to count the number of screaming-cat badges on and in this car and gave up once I hit a dozen. The steering wheel, door panels, C pillars, center console, and — of course — the hood ornament all boast snarling felines. Earlier Cougars had emblems showing full side views of stalking catamounts, but the Cougar logo for the 1980s showed just the head. This car got the optional center console, which I hear is quite a rarity. You had to pay $174 extra (that's around $513 in 2020 dollars) for an AM/FM/cassette audio system in the '81 Cougar, but at least the air conditioning was standard equipment. Believe it or not, thieves used to steal these radios. Kumpf Lincoln-Mercury still exists in Englewood (as Landmark Lincoln), and the yard that now houses this car can be found just 15 miles up Broadway on the north side of Denver.  The padded landau roof hasn't fared so well beneath the fierce Colorado sun, but overall this car seems very solid. Sadly, only the Mustangs and (once in a long while) Fairmonts get much love from the Fox Ford crowd these days. Three Mercury "wire wheel" hubcaps and one from a Lincoln. The base engine in the 1981 XR-7 was the "Thriftmaster" 200-cubic-inch (3.3-liter) straight-six, but very few XR-7 buyers would have refrained from checking the box for one of the two optional Windsor V8s. I can't tell if we're looking at the 255-cubic-inch (4.2-liter) version or the 302-cubic-inch (5.0-liter) one here, but real-world drivers might not have noticed the difference between the 120-horse 255 and the 130-horse 302, anyway. The non-XR-7 Fox Cougars had five-speed manual transmissions as base equipment (which nobody wanted), but all 1981 XR-7s had automatics.
