For Sale. Rare 1968 Cougar XR7-G Hertz Rent-a-car. This car is one of 188 Hertz rent-a-cars and one of 619 XR7-G cars. This is a high option car that needs a complete restoration. This car does not run or drive.  All the hard to find XR7-G parts are there, down to the original center caps. The pictures tell the story; it will need floors and a torque box. I have posted a picture of the Marti Report. The car is available for inspection and has a clean title. Please e-mail with questions.

The XR7-G is a totally different and unique car . The XR7-G started life as the high option XR-7 as produced in the Dearborn plant in 1968.  The idea was to provide a "status" car similar to the Shelby Mustangs being sold and raced by Ford and to bring traffic into the showroom.  Dan Gurney was a race car builder and driver who was uninterested in building a car carrying his already over used initial so the job fell to Ford’s old buddy Carroll Shelby.

By 1968, Carroll Shelby had ceased to modify production Mustangs in his Los Angeles Shelby American factory because of expansion at LAX airport where the facility was located.  Ford founded a new corporation based in Michigan named "Shelby Automotive Incorporated" to continue production, and Carroll Shelby was now a board member of the new corporation whereas he had been and continued to be president of Shelby American Inc.  Got all that?  As confusing as that sounds, it gets worse because Shelby Automotive subcontracted the work on the Shelby Mustangs and Cougar XR7-G’s to another Michigan based firm named A.O. Smith Incorporated.  A.O. Smith had been a supplier to Generic Motors for the Corvette fiberglass bodies until they lost the contract in 1967.  So while Carroll Shelby and Dan Gurney donated their names, and in Dan’s case an initial to these cool street machines, neither man had much to do with the design or production.

But wait! that’s not all!  If an XR7-G were scheduled to receive a sunroof (most did) it was installed by yet another Michigan company the American Sunroof Corporation (ASC).

NHTSA probing 2000-2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable models over throttle issue

Mon, 29 Oct 2012

A potential issue with the speed control cable collar has got the 2003-20003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable under the spotlight of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If the collar breaks it can cause the throttle to be stuck open.
The issue is limited to vehicles with the 3.0-liter V6 Duratec. There are just 50 complaints so far out of 310,000 cars, but the NHTSA has begun an investigation into whether a recall should be issued.

Junkyard Gem: 1981 Mercury Cougar XR-7

Sun, May 24 2020

The story of the Mercury Cougar involves more plot twists and unexpected digressions than that of just about any other Detroit car, with successive Cougar generations based on the Ford Mustang (1967-1973), the Ford Torino and/or Thunderbird (1974-1979), various Fox Fords including the Thunderbird (1980-1988), the MN12 Thunderbird/Lincoln Mark VIII (1989-1997), and the Ford Mondeo (1999-2002). There were wagon and sedan Cougars for brief periods, just to confuse everybody, and the rakish XR-7 Cougars sometimes lived on different platforms from their ordinary non-XR-7 counterparts. I think the Late Malaise Era Fox XR-7s are among the most interesting of the bunch, so I was quite excited to spot this tan-over-gold '81 in a Denver yard. I tried to count the number of screaming-cat badges on and in this car and gave up once I hit a dozen. The steering wheel, door panels, C pillars, center console, and — of course — the hood ornament all boast snarling felines. Earlier Cougars had emblems showing full side views of stalking catamounts, but the Cougar logo for the 1980s showed just the head. This car got the optional center console, which I hear is quite a rarity. You had to pay $174 extra (that's around $513 in 2020 dollars) for an AM/FM/cassette audio system in the '81 Cougar, but at least the air conditioning was standard equipment. Believe it or not, thieves used to steal these radios. Kumpf Lincoln-Mercury still exists in Englewood (as Landmark Lincoln), and the yard that now houses this car can be found just 15 miles up Broadway on the north side of Denver.  The padded landau roof hasn't fared so well beneath the fierce Colorado sun, but overall this car seems very solid. Sadly, only the Mustangs and (once in a long while) Fairmonts get much love from the Fox Ford crowd these days. Three Mercury "wire wheel" hubcaps and one from a Lincoln. The base engine in the 1981 XR-7 was the "Thriftmaster" 200-cubic-inch (3.3-liter) straight-six, but very few XR-7 buyers would have refrained from checking the box for one of the two optional Windsor V8s. I can't tell if we're looking at the 255-cubic-inch (4.2-liter) version or the 302-cubic-inch (5.0-liter) one here, but real-world drivers might not have noticed the difference between the 120-horse 255 and the 130-horse 302, anyway. The non-XR-7 Fox Cougars had five-speed manual transmissions as base equipment (which nobody wanted), but all 1981 XR-7s had automatics.

This Mercury Cyclone is an American Muscle Car in Norway

Tue, Oct 27 2015

The picturesque Norwegian countryside certainly doesn't seem like the natural stomping grounds for a 1969 Mercury Cyclone, but owner Alexander Brevik makes the odd combo look like an ideal match. Even with the beautiful surroundings, Brevik sees no need to enjoy the scenery; he'd much rather just be driving this vintage muscle car. Take a ride with him in the latest clip from Petrolicious. Like many of us, Brevik's automotive obsession started at childhood, and today he has amassed a multitude of projects to wrench on. While he loves working on all of these cars, we all need a break sometimes, and that's what the Cyclone is for. Even when the rest of his collection isn't running, this orange beauty is always ready to go. Brevik may not pay much attention to the landscape, but Petrolicious makes the muscle car look fantastic in the Norwegian woods nonetheless. With its rumbling V8 engine and three-speed manual, this Cyclone turns out to be a perfect cruising companion in the Land of the Midnight Sun. And if you just can't get enough of classic muscle cars and the people who love them, check out our video coverage of the 2015 Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit down below. Related Video:
