This is an original 1966 Mercury Cyclone GT with an S code 390, factory 4 speed transmission and 3.25 9” rear axle. It has a black interior with bucket seats, console and working factory tach on the dash. It has just under 110k original miles. Other than wheels and exhaust this car is very original and is still wearing its original paint. Originally a California car (still have the black plates) it has been in Washington for about 15 years.

The body on the Cyclone is very nice. It is very straight with good body lines and no signs of ever being having any bodywork done at all. Just one look down the sides and you can tell it is straight and never been touched. The car was not undercoated from the factory and there is no rust anywhere that I can find. The quarters, doors, trunk, frame rails etc all look excellent. Shock tower look very nice as does the rest of the engine compartment area. Doors open and very nicely with no sag. The trunk is extremely clean inside with no rust. Both front fenders were trimmed very slightly at the front lower corners of the wheel well, presumably for tire clearance at some point in the past. Not really noticeable unless pointed out to you. The bar that goes across the center of the grill has been repainted at one point, looks fine but is the only no original paint I can find. The original fiberglass hood is in excellent original condition, it has had hood locks installed. The paint still shines nicely but it is weak and has a lot of patina. There are many small chips or spots in the paint, especially on top surfaces. The spots have minor pitting in them, probably from being near saltwater while in CA. Nothing major and not structural at all. The front bumper is straight and is showing minor wear. Rear bumper has pitting and has a slight bend in the middle. Some of the other trim is pitted as well. Wheels are period correct 15” Torque Thrusts with Cooper Cobra tires that are in excellent shape. Some of the weatherstripping is showings its age as you would expect. Glass is all good.

The interior of the Cyclone is in amazing condition and is all original except for the bottom of the driver’s seat. The dash looks very good, both the dash pad and the lower dash and gauges. The console is very nice and is one of the nicest original 4speed console I have seen in a Cyclone or Fairlane. The seats look excellent as do the headliner and door panels. Even the carpet is original, although it does have some fading and a couple wear spots on the driver’s side from shoe heels. Floor mats would cover those and the interior would look excellent. Steering wheel has typical crack in the rim. Original AM radio is still present.

The 390 looks all original with original chrome valve covers, breather, air cleaner and chrome dipstick. It still has the original Holley carb with C6# on the choke horn. Still retains original intake and exhaust manifolds as well. It starts right up and runs good. It has newer 2.5” exhaust with X pipe and is throaty but still fairly quiet. The toploader 4spd works excellent and shifts very well, it is very quiet. The original shifter is still in place with working reverse lockout. The shifter is a bit sloppy as you would expect but it still works fine. The clutch is very smooth also although the pedal support bushings are worn and need replacement. The car drives as it should and is smooth on the highway. The steering has typical play but nothing unusual. All the gauges work including the factory tach, lights all work including the interior and reverse lights! Heater and wipers work although the factory delay wiper feature does not work. Horn works and radio comes on but you only hear static.

Overall this is an amazing car, if only they were all untouched and in this condition. My plan was to have some of the chrome restored and drive it as is but you could just leave it alone or do a full repaint and have trim redone. I really had no intention of selling this car but another car I have been after for years is coming available so I need to sell this one since it is the last one I bought for myself and I have not really put any real work into it.

Junkyard Gem: 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis LS

Ford's now-defunct Mercury Division first began using the Marquis name in 1967, on a sporty full-size hardtop based on the Ford LTD, then began offering the Grand Marquis beginning in the 1979 model year. These big, boxy luxury sedans were replaced by big, curvy luxury sedans (on the same platform) starting with the 1992 model year, so today's Junkyard Gem is one of the very last squared-off Grand Marquises ever built. The 1991 Grand Marquis (or "Grandma Keith," as many refer to it today) looks nearly identical to its 1979 predecessor at a glance, just as the 2011 model doesn't differ much from the 1992 model. Ford saw no reason to follow short-lived fashion trends with its simple, sturdy rear-wheel-drive sedan. Only two Grand Marquis trim levels were available for 1991: the base GS and the (somewhat) upscale LS. The former listed at $18,741 and the latter at $19,241, which comes to about $41,494 and $42,601, respectively, in inflated 2022 dollars). This interior would have seemed comfortingly familiar to a 1968 (or even 1958) Mercury owner time-traveling to 1991.  This is the optional "full grain leather seating surface," which cost an extra $489 (about $1,083 today). Dig those opera lights! Air conditioning was standard equipment in the 1991 Grand Marquis and its wagon counterpart, the Colony Park. The engine is the good old pushrod 5.0-liter Windsor V8, which would be replaced by a far more modern 4.6-liter SOHC mill in the '92 Grand Marquis. This engine was rated at 180 horsepower. A four-speed automatic was the only transmission available. The early 1990s ended up being the last gasp for padded vinyl roofs being considered mainstream equipment on new Detroit cars; this one was called the "Formal Coach" roof and cost an additional 725 bucks ($1,605 now). Such roofs were still available on a few cars later in the decade, but their time had passed. Why would such a clean Grandma Keith end up in a place like this? That's easy: it got T-boned directly into the right front wheel, mangling the body and bending up the suspension. Ford recalls 300,000 Crown Vics over lighting module

The Basics: Ford is recalling 312,814 units of the Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis sedans from the 2003-2005 model years. They were built at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant between Oct. 3, 2001, and Aug. 2, 2005. Ford says 296,004 of those units are located in the United States, with another 14,714 in Canada and 2,096 in Mexico. The Problem: The solder joints on the lighting control module could crack, depriving the headlamps of the power they need to light the way ahead. That could increase the risk of a crash, particularly at night and in other low-visibility situations. Injuries/Deaths: Ford reports that it is aware of 11 accidents that resulted from the problem, leading to one injury described as "minor." The Fix: The manufacturer is instructing dealers to replace the entire lighting control module. If You Own One: Make sure your headlights are working before getting under way. If they're not, avoid driving under low-light conditions, including at night, in heavy precipitation, or in fog. Impala SS vs. Marauder — it was comparo that only really happened in theory. ChevyÂ’s muscle sedan ran from 1994-96, while MercuryÂ’s answer arrived in 2003 and only lasted until 2004. TheyÂ’re linked inextricably, as there were few options for powerful American sedans during that milquetoast period for enthusiasts. The debate was reignited recently among Autoblog editors when a pristine 1996 Chevy Impala SS with just 2,173 miles on the odometer hit the market on Bring a Trailer. Most of the staff favored the Impala for its sinister looks and said that it lived up to its billing as a legit muscle car. Nearly two-thirds of you agree. The Marauder, despite coming along later, felt more hacked together, according to prevailing sentiments. Why? On purpose and on paper theyÂ’re similar. The ImpalaÂ’s 5.7-liter LT1 V8 making 260 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque was impressive for a two-ton sedan in the mid-Â’90s. The Marauder was actually more powerful — its 4.6-liter V8 was rated at 302 hp and 318 lb-ft. The ImpalaÂ’s engine was also used in the C4 Corvette. The MarauderÂ’s mill was shared with the Mustang Mach 1. You can see why they resonated so deeply with Boomers longing for a bygone era and also captured the attention of coming-of-age Gen Xers. Car and DriverÂ’s staff gave the Marauder a lukewarm review back in ‘03, citing its solid handling and features, yet knocking the sedan for being slow off the line. In a Hemmings article appropriately called “Autopsy” from 2004, the ImpalaÂ’s stronger low-end torque and smooth shifting transmission earned praise, separating it from the more sluggish Mercury. All of this was captured in the carsÂ’ acceleration times, highlighting metrically the differences in their character. The Impala hit 60 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds, while the Marauder was a half-second slower, according to C/D testing. Other sites have them closer together, which reinforces the premise it really was the little things that separated these muscle cars. Both made the most of their genetics, riding on ancient platforms (FordÂ’s Panther and General MotorsÂ’ B-body) that preceded these cars by decades. Both had iconic names.
