This is one of the cleanest Comets you'll ever see! Drive Anywhere!

289 Windsor V8, C4 auto transmission, power steering, no A/C. All original (except engine has been rebuilt).

BTW, that's just water in the street. The car doesn't leak at all.

The Good:
  • It has a very high end paint job that is incredible. It's flat and pearl and turns heads
  • It's SOLID. All floor pans, rockers, doors, trunk etc. There is only very minor surface rust that isn't visible
  • STRAIGHT
  • Clean title in hand
  • I am the 3rd owner of the car. The last owner owned it since 1971
  • Doors open and close nicely
  • Top works great and has been re-canvassed
  • Brakes and starter are brand new
  • Engine fairly recently was rebuilt and heads have hardened valve seats so it runs on 87 unleaded easily
  • All new control arms, power steering, sway bar mounts, end links, etc.
  • All 4 tires are like new
  • Gauges all work
  • C4 transmission shifts flawlessly
  • Comes with boxes and boxes of trim and molding pieces and odds and ends, including the 4 original Comet wheel covers
  • Has ALWAYS been garaged

The Bad (The Interior!):

  • The interior has not been worked on other than the front seat being re-covered.
  • The panels and carpet are old and brittle
  • The front carpet is decent but rear carpet is bad
  • There is no body rot anywhere, but door panels do need attention
  • The dash pad has 2 cracks in it
  • The GOOD news is the interior is mostly metal and can be re-painted at a minimal cost

Junkyard Gem: 1996 Nissan Quest XE with 338,549 miles

Sun, Jul 9 2023

When I hit the junkyard, I always look for vehicles with impressive final figures showing on their odometers. I find so many Hondas and Toyotas with better than 300,000 miles that I don't consider them especially noteworthy (the exception being super-low-spec cheap models, such as a Tercel or Civic VX), and it goes without saying that the bar is quite high for Mercedes-Benzes as well. It has been surprisingly difficult to find discarded Nissans that made it past the 300k mark; today's Junkyard Gem is just the fourth I've documented. The highest-mile junked Nissan I'd found prior to today's minivan is a 1994 Maxima with 364,238 miles, followed by a 1987 Maxima with 341,176 miles and a 1986 200SX with 309,222 miles. Keep in mind that Nissan didn't go to six-digit odometers on most of its US-market cars until the early 1980s, and then went to tough-to-read-in-the-junkyard electronic odometers in the early 2000s; this means the pool of potential high-mile Nissans is limited to about the 1983-2000 range of model years. Ford has just as much right to claim credit to this van's impressive mile total as does Nissan, since the Quest was a collaboration between Ford and Nissan that also produced the Mercury Villager; this van was built by Ford at the Ohio Assembly plant. The Quest/Villager platform was derived from the Maxima's, and the engine is pure Nissan: a 3.0-liter VG30 V6 rated at 151 horsepower. The only transmission available in the first-generation (1993-1999) Quest/Villager was a four-speed automatic. This one appears to have been sold new at Landrum Nissan in Pueblo. The rear glass has been painted flat black, possibly to keep prying eyes from seeing valuable cargo. The rear seats are long gone, so this van probably hauled cargo for much of its long life. The front interior seems to be in good shape. Why is this van here? There's body damage on the left rear and right front, suggesting a crash that may have bent the suspension past the worth-fixing threshold. Perhaps the crinkled metal just made this van too unsightly, or maybe some powertrain problem was the culprit. This content is hosted by a third party. Junkyard Gem: 1973 Mercury Montego MX Brougham Sawzall Convertible Edition

Fri, Apr 21 2017

You know how it goes— the weather is warm, you want to do some top-down driving, and you lack a proper convertible... but you do have a hooptie Detroit car on one side of the garage and a big ol' Sawzall on the other. Put the two together and you have a Sawzall Convertible, which generally lasts for about one summer before it gets scrapped. Here's a fine example of such a car, photographed in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service junkyard. Most Sawzall Convertibles (yes, it should be called a roadster, but nobody does that) have raw, ragged metal edges, or maybe duct tape over the stumps of the amputated pillars, but someone went to the trouble to weld nice smooth metal covers over the hackage on this one. The windshield is gone. Instead, the windshield frame is ringed by tongue depressors held in place by gooey roofing tar. No, we don't know why. The Montego MX Brougham was a hot-selling personal luxury coupe in its day, selling for $3,041 in 1973. That's just under $17,000 in 2017 dollars. It must have been fun, cruising this thing on Bay Area streets with no roof and a rattle-can spray-bomb job. This one has the optional 400-cubic-inch V8 engine, rated at 171 horsepower. What would this car's original buyer have thought of its fate? This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. NHTSA and Ford investigating steering issues in Crown Vic, Grand Marquis and Marauder

Fri, 11 Jul 2014

There may be more steering woes for the Ford Crown Victoria. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a preliminary evaluation into the Crown Vic and Mercury Grand Marquis from the 2004 to 2007 model years and the Mercury Marauder for the 2004 and 2005 model years because the steering shaft can jam. The issue could potentially affect an estimated 500,000 vehicles.
According to the regulator, there is a possibility that the driver's side heat shield for the exhaust manifold can rust, dislodge, and then wedge into the steering shaft. If this occurs, it leads to a situation where the driver can no longer control the car.
NHTSA has received five complaints of this happening, including one alleged case with an injury. In that situation, the car was driving onto the highway, lost control and rolled over. One occupant was hurt in the accident.
