1964 Mercury Comet 2 Door Sedan, Runs Great!, New Interior, Headturner on 2040-cars

1964 MERCURY COMET 2 DOOR SEDAN. Its an automatic straight 6. All chrome in good condition. There is no rust or bondo. When i purchased the vehicle definitely needed some TLC. It drove but right away needed the steering box replaced. I had to have it towed the 2 hours from Orlando to my home. Except for the last 2 years, this car has always resided in, been titled in Orlando, Florida, and from what I have been told, garaged. The floorboard was rusted out in the driver side. The floor board has been completely replaced (brand new welded in). The interior is all new : custom ordered vinyl seat covers with new cushion, new carpet, new door panels (front and back), new arm rests for the front, the back arm rests are the original ones with the ash trays built in. Even the steering wheel was repair. It had cracks....had to be sanded, filled, sanded again, and repainted. All the plastic pieces in the interior of the car were repaired and painted chrome. I think the interior (door panels, dash and such) used to be grayish blue maybe. Oh, there were not two side mirrors on the door. I installed the passenger side one. Also all the metal work/black was sanded down and repainted. The front lap belts are original but the back seat belts were installed and welded into the trunk for safety...(did this specifically for my children's safety). All windows go up and down, all glass in perfect condition. blinkers, windshield wipers all work. Weatherstripping has been replaced around all the windows, except the vent windows (triangles window in front doors). Under the hood is mainly originally. When I purchased, the steering box had to be replaced. All hoses and gaskets were also replaced when purchased. Brake pads, light bulbs, spark plugs, all liquids, and filters replaced as well. A coca-cola bottle installed as the radiator overflow. Custom paint job on air filter and under the hood. Fine details done (dog dishes, back area near trunk bumper/gas tank, and parts of front grill) all repainted. Look at the tiny black squares on the chrome and you will see what i mean. Truck weather seal also replaced. Brand new white wall tires also purchased.
So whats wrong: headliner needs to be installed. I do have 2 headliners that are antique white. 1 for the headliner and one for extra for visors. I never did it because to really do it right you need to remove the front and back windshield, and I don't have the confidence to do it myself....i'm such a klutz i would probably break the glass in the process. there are a couple of tiny pin holes in the wheel wells of the trunk (very tiny). The car needs a paint job. the window seal/weather stripping in the triangle windows will need to be replaced. Oh, and the radio does not work...its just for show. to be honest i never did connect it, so it may work. Visors are in the truck, but will need to be recovered and screwed into roof.
Overall its a great car. Its simple under the hood, but built the way an old car is suppose to. You look under the hood and have the engine, radiator, and transmission...beauty in the simplicity of it. It drives well, and even though its not finished, it always impresses at car shows. I thought I would keep this car forever!!! Literally. It's rare to have a woman (let alone a woman in her thirties) own a classic car. I figured my daughter, who is now 12, would get it as her first car once she turns 16. It drives so smooth, especially over speed bumps. Well, now my good mechanic friend who is responsible for helping me rebuild the car is no longer in my life. My boyfriend and I (and our combined) four kids are getting ready to move in together. We could keep if, if I begged long enough, but the reality is we really could use the money for other things. I used to go to car shows all the time, every other weekend, but for the last year I've been with my boyfriend, I just don't go anymore. I hate to sell this car, but want it to go to a good home. I’m just trying to get (financially) what I put into it. Car is being sold as it. Clean title in hand. No warranty or guarantee with vehicle. This is a 50 year old classic car….expect to have issues down the road…but the good news is, the are simple to fix (no new technology that costs a bundle). All sales are final. Buyer is responsible for (coordinating) pick up and delivery of vehicle. I will except a cashier’s check, cash, or wire transfer. Junkyard Gem: 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid
Sat, Dec 19 2020Once hybrid vehicles from Honda and Toyota proved to work well in the real world of American streets during the early 2000s, other U.S.-market manufacturers climbed aboard the gasoline-electric bandwagon. Ford introduced the Escape Hybrid for the 2005 model year and sales proved quite strong; its Mercury-badged sibling, the Mariner Hybrid, appeared the following year. The Mariner Hybrid never induced many vehicle shoppers to sign on the line which is dotted, despite gasoline prices going absolutely ape in 2008, though it remained available all the way through the Mercury brand's 2010 demise. Here's one of those rare trucks, found in a Denver-area yard last month. The Escape/Mariner Hybrids got amazing fuel economy for tall, truck-shaped machines, though the serious penny-pinchers with long commutes skipped anything built in the 21st century and began driving up the prices of the once-scorned Geo Metro XFi, gas-sipping champion of the previous decade. The Mercury brand was on the ropes by this time, with not much to distinguish the once-distinctive Mercury machines from their near-identical Ford counterparts. The 1999-2002 Cougar was the last Mercury sold here with no twin brothers over in the Ford showrooms. I do see the occasional Escape Hybrid in places like this, though such gas-saving small SUVs tend to retain their value well enough that it takes a crash to retire one. This Mariner Hybrid hit something hard and either flipped on its side or scraped a guardrail for some distance. The airbags deployed and, presumably, spared the occupants from serious injury. That's the good news. The bad news is that fixing this kind of damage to a 13-year-old vehicle made by a defunct brand just isn't worth it to insurance companies, hybrid-electric powertrain or not. We can assume that the battery pack lives on in another Escape/Mariner. Navigation, Bluetooth, and other features that were considered pretty slick in 2007. This truck was in pretty good shape until the very end. Jill Wagner proved that you can bury a Mercury emblem in volcanic soil and it will grow into a brand-new Mariner Hybrid. That's how science works! You can go to the same field and tap on a Mercury emblem, if you want to get a regular gasoline Mariner. Junkyard Gem: 1989 Mercury Tracer Four-Door Hatchback
Sat, Mar 6 2021During the life of the Mercury brand, which began in 1939 and ended in 2011, nearly every Mercury sold in North America was a cosmetically enhanced version of some Ford model also sold here. The exceptions to this rule came when Mercury sold Fords originally designed for non-North American markets, and for which no Ford-branded version existed on our shores. The 1991-1994 Capri was such a car, as was the 1999-2002 Cougar (the Mondeo-based Cougar was unique among all Mercuries in that no other cars in the sprawling Ford Empire shared its body). The 1970-1978 Capri was sold through Mercury dealers here, but never had Mercury badging. One of the rarest of all these Mercury cars was the first-generation Tracer, a Mazda design that made its way here via Australia. The bloodline of the Tracer goes back to the Mazda 323, the ancestor of today's Mazda3 and the platform used for all those US-market Ford Escorts of the 1990s. Starting in 1991, the Tracer name went onto badge-engineered Escorts, according to Mercury tradition, but the 1988-1989 Tracers were based on the Australian-market Ford KE Laser. Underneath all of those cars (as well as the early-1990s Capris) lived Mazda 323 running gear, of course. This one nearly made it to the 175,000-mile mark during its time on the road, which is respectable by the standards of 1980s Mazdas. With an automatic transmission transferring the 84 horses from its Mazda B6 engine to the front wheels, this car wouldn't have offered a great deal of driving excitement. 1989 Tracer buyers could choose between a two-door hatchback, a four-door hatchback, and a four-door wagon. Not many Americans hurried over to their local Mercury dealers to buy Tracers, despite the fact that the nearest Ford-badged identical twins were on the other side of the globe. Mercury still seemed relevant in the late 1980s, but its days were numbered. The actress driving the Tracer in this TV commercial seems to have the same deer-in-headlights facial expression of the hapless driver-training students in the 1968 AMC Rebel commercial.
Report: Lincoln getting all of Mercury's ad dollars
Mon, 03 Jan 2011Now that the curtain has closed on Mercury, Ford Motor Company will redirect all of its marketing dollars for the oft-overlooked brand to the Blue Oval's luxury outpost, Lincoln. In speaking to Automotive News, the chairman of the Lincoln National Dealer Council, Bob Tasca, Jr., said, "You'll see a lot stronger presence in the advertising of Lincoln in 2011."
Lincoln spokesperson Christian Bokich reminded AN that the automaker is "preparing the way for seven new or significantly refreshed vehicles" that will be launched over the next four years, and the largest ad blitz in 2011 will focus on the refreshed MKX crossover, as well as the MKZ sedan and its hybrid counterpart. Following that, Lincoln has plans to launch a completely overhauled version of its Navigator SUV, an all-new C-segment vehicle and the overhauled 2013 MKZ, which Tasca says will be "strikingly different from its Ford Fusion sibling."
