I bought this 2005 AWD Mercury Mountaineer from a friend who unfortunately overheated it on his way home. After it had cooled down, it would not start. He talked to his mechanic who told him it would be easier and more cost effective to just buy a good used 4.0 Flex Fuel V6 motor and replace it rather than rebuild this one. He needed another car immediately and so he sold me the Mountaineer and bought another vehicle. I have another friend who used to be the head mechanic at a Ford dealership who told me that he could install another engine for me in his spare time. He has since gotten very busy and no longer has the time to replace the engine for me so I have decided to sell the Mercury at a very affordable price to someone who has the time to work on it.

Up until the point where it overheated, my friend told me the Mountaineer drove like new and had always been well maintained and it shows. The leather interior is like new with the exception of a tear on the bottom side panel of the driver's seat (see photo). The exterior is also overall extremely nice. The previous owner's wife had some parking lot issues with the worse being minor damage to the leading edge of the left front fender (see photo). She also brushed the bumpers in the course of parking and damaged the left front and right rear side marker lenses as well as the front fog lights, all of which are easily replaced. The passenger side outside mirror is cracked and inexpensive replacement overlays are available. The truck has never been involved in an accident and the original paint still shines like new with the exception of the roof which has some peeling (common with these vehicles). Since the roof is as high as it is, you could touch this in with a can of touch up paint and most people would never notice it. There are virtually no door dings and there is no rust anywhere. The plastic panel on the tailgate has a crack due to a design flaw but since all the Mountaineers and Explorers do this, I see no reason to replace it. Overall, the Mercury presents itself very well as can been seen in the photos.

The Mountaineer is well equipped with most options including All Wheel Drive, leather, dual A/C, CD, third seat, power seat, power windows and locks and mirrors, tilt wheel, cruise control, alloy wheels, keyless entry, and so on. It has a matched set of BFG Rugged Terrain tires which are still in good shape. Our friend said the Mercury ran and drove great until it overheated. The AWD worked fine, the transmission shifted as it should, the air conditioning blew cold, and all the accessories worked as they should except that both rear windows are not responding to the switch. All the CV boots are good and the truck has no leaks.

This is really a nice SUV once you replace the engine and the 4.0 V6's are easy to find. I like the Mountaineer because it is classier looking than the Explorer and is more unique. Wikipedia says that the Mountaineer had the highest owner loyalty of any SUV. This truck is priced very reasonably and could pass for one that has 60k miles based on the way it looks and drives.

The Mercury is located in Payson, Arizona (85541) which is about 75 miles northeast of metro Phoenix. I will assist in any way I can in getting the truck delivered to you. Please note that I reserve the right to end the auction early if bidding is sluggish so please don't wait until the last minute to bid to avoid the disappointment of finding the auction closed. Finally, although I have done my best to accurately describe the Mountaineer, it is, of course, sold as is without any warranty.

Please feel free to email or call me at 928-468-7060 with any questions you may have. I can usually be reached most afternoons and evenings.

Thanks for looking!

Ford recalls over 953,000 vehicles to replace Takata airbag inflators

Fri, Jan 4 2019

DETROIT — Ford is recalling more than 953,000 vehicles worldwide to replace Takata passenger airbag inflators that can explode and hurl shrapnel. The move includes over 782,000 vehicles in the U.S. and is part of the largest series of recalls in U.S. history. Included are the 2010 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, the 2010 and 2011 Ford Ranger, the 2010 to 2012 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, the 2010 and 2011 Mercury Milan, and the 2010 to 2014 Ford Mustang. Some of the recalls may be limited to specific geographic areas of the U.S. Takata used the chemical ammonium nitrate to create an explosion to inflate airbags. But it can deteriorate over time due to heat and humidity and explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister designed to contain the explosion. At least 23 people have been killed worldwide and hundreds injured by the inflators. Ford says it doesn't know of any injuries in vehicles included in this recall. Dealers will replace the inflators. Ford will notify owners about the recall starting on Feb. 18, and the company has replacement parts available for dealers to order, said spokeswoman Monique Brentley. In previous Takata recalls, parts availability had been an issue. Owners can go to this Ford website and key in their vehicle identification number to see if their cars and SUVs are being recalled. The same information will be available soon at the NHTSA recall website. More than three years after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took over management of recalls involving Takata inflators, one third of the recalled inflators still have not been replaced, according to an annual report from the government and a court-appointed monitor. The report says 16.7 million faulty inflators out of 50 million under recall have yet to be replaced. And 10 million more inflators are scheduled to be recalled this month, including the Ford vehicles. Safety advocates said the completion rate should be far higher given the danger associated with the inflators. The recalls forced Takata of Japan to seek bankruptcy protection and sell most of its assets to pay for the fixes. The inflators grow more dangerous as they get older because ammonium nitrate deteriorates due to high humidity and cycles from hot temperatures to cold. The most dangerous inflators are in areas of the South along the Gulf of Mexico that have high humidity. Related Video:

Auto Show Notebook: Legendary Continental name inspired Lincoln's designers

Thu, Apr 2 2015

What's in a name? A lot for the Continental concept, and it gave Lincoln designers a sense of purpose as they styled the brand's upcoming flagship sedan. "The moment that we told them, it was amazing," Lincoln president Kumar Galhotra said. "They totally got it." "It" is cutting-edge technology wrapped in stately, large-sedan design. It's a nod to Lincoln's storied past, but a signpost for where the brand is heading. Though the Continental name dates to the late 1930s, Lincoln designers avoided making the concept overtly retro. "You can't let it pull yourself back too far in history, but you've got to design a car that lives up to the name," Galhotra said. Speaking to Autoblog on the floor of the New York Auto Show where the Continental formally debuted Wednesday, the Lincoln president reiterated that the car is on track to launch in 2016. It will compete against the Audi A6, Lexus GS, BMW 5 Series and other large luxury sedans. After its debut, the concept in New York will fly to China – another critical market for Lincoln – for display there. It will be replaced in New York by a prototype without an interior. The Continental is the latest high profile play by Lincoln to raise its image with consumers, who have either ignored or forgotten about it amid steep competition in the luxury sector from German and Japanese brands and a potentially resilient Cadillac. Lincoln sales are essentially flat compared with 2014 through the first quarter of this year, with total volume of 21,478 units. The middling start to 2015 comes on the heels of nearly 16-percent sales growth last year spurred by the launch of the MKC and the prominent signing of Matthew McConaughey to star in Lincoln advertisements. Other News, Notes & Quotes Speaking of names, Chevrolet did its homework before deciding to proceed with "Malibu" for its new generation of midsize cars. "We went out and researched it," said Alan Batey, president of General Motors North America. "People actually like the name 'Malibu,'" he said. Admittedly, the current Malibu has struggled in the marketplace against entrenched competitors, Batey said, but he's optimistic its awareness and historical value are assets to the dramatically redesigned sedan."The name's strong," he said. Meanwhile, in other Chevy news, the brand kicked off a new marketing campaign, "Real People, Not Actors" Wednesday. It will show consumers interacting with Chevys and their spontaneous reactions to the vehicles.

Feds open investigation into Chevy Express, Ford Freestar rust issues

Wed, 28 Dec 2011

'Tis the season... for road salt. And with that, comes rust. And what does rust bring? Well, for Ford and General Motors, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation. According to The Detroit News, NHTSA is looking into potential recalls issues with Chevrolet Express vans and Ford Freestar minivans.
The feds have received five complaints that rust has caused leaking fuel filler pipes on 2003 Express vans. Separately, seven complaints have been filed over excessive rust in the rear wheel wells of 2004 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans. The Freestar and Monterey went out of production in 2007. Neither issue has resulted in any crashes or injuries, according to the report.
