This 1952 Mercury Monterey 4 door sedan is a near original beauty. It
makes rubberneckers out of 'ol timers, grease monkeys, ladies, and
babies! She came to me with a 70's era Ford 302 and three speed C4
transmission (now replaced) and had been repainted a two-tone silver and
metallic gray.
This car is a semi-daily driver rolling on upgraded radial white walls, chrome smoothies, newly rebuilt transmission with overdrive and transmission cooler, rebuilt radiator, fresh 4V carb and freshly lined gas tank. Any imperfections are the result of surviving 62 years of sun, wind, and rain - and my lead foot. I have owned her since 2005. BODY: The body is very straight with no dents or dings. There is some very light bubbling of paint where the rear doors meet the rear wheel wells (see pictures), but is 99% rust free. The paint is in pretty decent shape and shines up like a champ. All exterior chrome and trim is complete. Very little to no pitting of taillight housing as is common in this model. The hood is a little finicky to seat straight and requires some finessing, and there is some touch up paint in the inside corners of the hood. All locks and door latches are operable. The rear doors require some effort to close (hinges), but latch securely. GLASS: All glass is complete and free of any major cracks, or scratches. The window weatherstripping/seals are drying and cracking in some spots, especially around the rear window (see pics), so the rear dash has some water damage. INTERIOR: Interior upholstery is all original and in good condition. The floor carpet is a replacement kit in great condition. Seats are good. The door panels have some discoloration from age (see pictures) and the arm rests are worn. The headliner is is good condition with no rips or tears, very slight sagging in spots, and some discoloration from aging (see pictures). All interior chrome/trim is complete and in good shape, except the ignition key bezel is broken off (still have). Seat belts for 5. Ol' fashioned Mercury suicide knob lets you swing this baby around like a pro. ELECTRICAL: 12V system upgrade by previous owner with all non-essential wiring left the original cotton-loom variety, early 90's cassette player AM/FM radio. Headlights and interior lights are operable, all lenses present. Brake lights need re-wired. MECHANICAL: 302 Windsor style engine is an early 70's transplant that gets up and goes. In all honesty this will need rebuilt or replaced sometime down the road as it is an older engine, but you can totally enjoy her the way she is in the meantime. She is a weekend driver all over town. These engines are hard to kill! I have upgraded to Edelbrock performer intake manifold with fresh Edelbrock 4V 650 CFM carb. Custom fabricated shift linkage to the freshly rebuilt Ford AOD OVERDRIVE TRANSMISSION. Transmission cooler with new steel lines. Still needs speedo cable. Radiator was rebuilt a few years back, but can still run hot here in the desert heat. Fresh re-lined original gas tank. Cherry bomb style dual exhaust with deep mellow sound. Original drum brakes all around. Original rear-end. All in all this is a great looking and solid blast from the past that you can have fun with, and makes a heck of a starting point if you want to really restore or customize. I am selling only because I have my eye on an F-100 truck that I've been lusting after. You know the deal... Ford recalls Five Hundred, Mercury Montego sedans over fuel tank woes
Mon, 18 Jul 2011Ford has announced through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is recalling nearly 3,000 examples of its Five Hundred and Mercury Montego (pictured) sedans from the 2007 model year.
The action, which affects 2,945 vehicles, is due to potentially defective welds between the filler neck and the fuel tank, a condition that could result in a fuel leak or the smell of gasoline reaching the occupants. In the worst-case scenario, a leak could cause a fire. Cars with the affected fuel tank problem could see an illuminated dashboard warning light as a result of the evaporative emissions leak being detected.
Ford will inspect and replace the fuel tank at no cost to owners (those who have already had the procedure done at-cost can apply for reimbursement), and the Dearborn automaker will begin notifying Five Hundred and Montego owners beginning August 15. Junkyard Gem: 1991 Mercury Capri
Mon, Sep 19 2016Ford has gotten a lot of use out of the Capri name in the United States. First, there was the Lincoln Capri in the 1950s, followed by the Ford Capri Mk1 (which was sold by Mercury dealers in the USA but never actually badged as a Mercury). Then came the 1979-1986 Mercury Capri, built on the very successful Fox Platform and essentially a clone of the Mustang. Finally, in 1991, the Australian Ford Capri came to the United States. Here is an example of this rare car that I spotted in a Northern California self-service yard not long ago. Mechanically speaking, the 1991-1994 Capri was a Mazda 323 under the skin, complete with a member of the same B-series engine family that went into such cars as the Miata and Ford Escort. So, for a few years in the early 1990s, car shoppers who wanted a sporty Mazda convertible could choose between a Miata and a Capri. The Capri had front-wheel-drive, but could be had with factory turbocharging. These cars were reliable and fun, but had a tough time competing with the Miata in the showroom battles. You'll see the occasional example now and then, but most of the 1991-1994 Capris have met the same fate that awaits this one. Related Video:
The AM37 is literally the Aston Martin of boats
Wed, Sep 28 2016While sports car companies such as Porsche and Lamborghini are looking to SUVs to expand their offerings, Aston Martin has taken a page from Mercedes and designed a boat. Specifically, it's a 37-foot powerboat appropriately named the AM37. The boat was developed with help from Mulder Design and Quintessence Yachts, and is available in two different versions, both of which should the aquatic equivalent of Aston Martin performance. The standard AM37 is available with two different pairs of engines from Mercury, either 370-horsepower diesel engines or 450-horsepower gas engines. If that's not enough, Aston also offers the AM37S, which comes with a pair of 520-horsepower gasoline Mercury engines. Like road-going Astons, this boat is absolutely gorgeous. The lines are simple, crisp and clean. It features a beautiful wood deck, and an impressive double-curved, single-piece glass windshield. And if you get tired of the sun, the AM37 features a powered, carbon fiber bimini top. The interior completes the package with a carbon fiber dashboard, lots of leather and polished steering wheel, throttle and joystick. It's also incredibly well-equipped with seating for eight, air conditioning, mood lighting, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, a bed that folds out from the table, and even a bathroom. Aston Martin didn't release pricing or availability for the AM37. However, we suspect that if you really want this boat and have the means, pricing doesn't matter, and you're probably willing to wait.
