This is a custom built replica street version racecar of the Wood Brothers Mercury that Hall of Fame driver David Pearson drove to defeat Hall of Fame driver Richard Petty in the memorable 1976 Daytona 500. In that famous race, both drivers spun off the track as they approached the finish line, Pearson was able to recover first to take the checkered flag in what was arguably the most exciting Daytona 500 race finish ever. Recently elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, David Pearson had one of the most distinguished racing careers in motorsports. This street version replica racecar was custom built from the ground up by Gateway Classic Mustang in St. Louis, Missouri. The car was also featured on Hot Rod Television on Speed in 2011. The car was donated to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation for auction at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona where it hammered sold for $90,000 in 2011. It is a 1974 Mercury as opposed to the original car which was a 1976 model. This amazing car features a Ford Racing 521ci V8 engine mated to a Keisler RS600 5-speed manual transmission. The engine has aluminum Ford Racing Super Cobra Jet heads, mechanical roller camshaft, Holley 4150 4-barrel carburetor, Edelbrock Torker II 460 intake, MSD ignition and wires, MSD distributor, KRC steering pump and a BeCool aluminum radiator with twin electric fans. It has 10: 1 compression and it produces 609hp and 630 lb. ft. of torque. It has a Ford 9 inch rear end. The side exit exhaust is custom fabricated as are the headers. The BF Goodrich g-Force TA slicks are on Cragar mag wheels. The interior features a Keisler shifter, racing style dash, stripped interior, Pro-Comp gauges, full roll bar, Simpson 5-point racing harness, Procar by Scat Extreme Competition seats, push button starter and an Ididit steering column with tilt wheel and a Grant racing steering wheel. In the trunk is an Optima battery and a racing fuel cell. It has a Wilwood brake system with Baer disc brakes and a brake bias adjustor. The paint is from Sherwin-Williams and is from the Barrett-Jackson Collector Color chart. The base is Snow White and the Purolator livery was created using Red Hot Chili Pepper and Blisterin Blue. It runs amazingly well and starts right up. The cost to duplicate would easily be in the 6 figure range. Working lights including turn signals and interior lights etc. E brake system and hood release all restored along with roll up windows locking doors and trunk with original keys and wiper motors, etc etc. Amazing car. Car has only 19 miles since completion. A great car to add to your collection in the garage and be the envy of your friends!  I am the Owner and selling the car titled in my name.

eBay Find of the Day: Mercury Marauder two-door convertible

Wed, 31 Aug 2011

Never underestimate what you'll see on eBay Motors. Take this unique creation, for example. Near as we can tell, it's the same 2002 Mercury Marauder that was modified into a two-door convertible by Ford for the 2002 Chicago Auto Show. According to the seller, this car still boasts its Eaton supercharger bolted to a 4.6-liter V8 engine, and at the time of its debut, the engine was rated at a lofty 335 horsepower. We have a hard time believing that the extra ponies would do much to offset the weight of the additional frame stiffeners and top mechanism on the car, however.
The vehicle is currently offered for sale by a dealer in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, though the listing is mum on how the convertible managed to make its way from Ford's Windy City show stand into the seller's inventory. If you like what you see, the machine can be yours for the princely sum of $75,000 or best offer. Head over to eBay Motors to take a gander at the listing.

Junkyard Gem: 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham 4-Door Pillared Hardtop

Tue, Nov 7 2023

Ford's Mercury Division debuted the Marquis in the 1967 model year, as a sporty coupe based on a stretched Ford LTD chassis. When the LTD got an update for 1969, so did the Marquis, and production of that generation of the top-of-the-line Mercury continued through 1978 (the Grand Marquis hit streets the following year). The 1969-1978 Marquis was a big, imposing land yacht, and the Brougham version came absolutely loaded with affordable luxury. Today's Junkyard Gem is a Marquis Brougham from the first year of the Malaise Era, found in a Phoenix self-service car graveyard recently. This car appears to have spent decades sitting outdoors in one of the harshest climates in the country, and so it's in rough shape. The vinyl top received the full thermonuclear treatment and is mostly obliterated by now. The interior got thoroughly cooked as well. Still, its original opulence shines through if you use some imagination. What hurts is that this car was packed with most of the good options, including the mighty 460-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) V8 engine with four-barrel carburetor. The price for the 460 was just $76 in this car, or around $548 in today's money. The base engine was a 429 (7.0-liter). Power numbers were way down for 1973 when compared to a couple of years earlier, partly as the result of tightening emissions standards but mostly due to the switch from gross to net power ratings that began midway during 1971 and was completed by the end of 1972. This engine was rated at 202 horsepower and 330 pound-feet. The only transmission available was a three-speed automatic. We can assume that the original buyer of this car and its single-digit fuel economy had a rough time when the OPEC oil embargo hit in the fall of 1973. Believe it or not, air conditioning was not standard equipment on the '73 Marquis Brougham (you had to move up to a Lincoln for that). This one even has the automatic temperature control feature, adding a total of $508 to the cost of this car (about $3,661 in 2023 dollars). That AM/FM/8-track radio—or, in fact, any radio—was an extra-cost option as well, with a price tag of $363 ($2,616 after inflation). The MSRP for the 1973 Marquis Brougham sedan (known as a "pillared hardtop" thanks to the frameless window glass) was $5,072, which comes to $36,555 in today's dollars. Obviously, its out-the-door cost would have been much higher with all the options.

Ford recalls 600,000 older-model sedans for braking issue

Fri, Dec 20 2019

Ford is recalling 600,166 older-model Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles over an issue that could affect braking and increase the risk of a crash. The safety recall covers certain Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ sedans from the 2006 through 2010 model years that were built at Ford’s Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico between Feb. 22, 2006, and July 15, 2009. Ford says a valve that is normally closed inside the hydraulic control unit may get stuck in the open position or be slow to close, which could make it harder to engage the brakes and increase risk of a crash. Ford says itÂ’s aware of 15 reports of accidents and two injuries possibly related to the issue. Dealers will inspect the hydraulic control unit for signs of the problem and replace it, if necessary. The dealers will pressure-flush the system with brake fluid and replace the reservoir cap with a new one. Ford is also issuing a small recall of 33 of its 2020 F-150 trucks in the U.S. and 51 in Canada over potentially damaged spare tires. It says the bead area on the tires may have been damaged when it was mounted onto the wheel assembly, leaving it vulnerable to corrosion, separation of the bead wire and ultimately a rapid loss of air pressure and detachment from the wheel. Dealers will replace the spare tire. Affected vehicles were built at the Dearborn Truck Plant from Nov. 10-21 of this year.
