I have decided to put my beloved Woody Wagon up for sale. The only reason I am selling it is because of the little use that it gets. I only drove it 3 times this year. I have a number of cars and this one by far gets the most comments...especially the license plate!I bought this 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis Colony Park Wagon at an estate auction from the original owner. The owner was a doctor. It is vintage 1991. It even has a built-in radar detector and cell phone descrambler from 1991. This car is completely loaded and all of the electronics work. Except for a few minor blemishes, the interior is in great shape-nice tan leather. The rear window and two way tailgate also work great. The exterior has had some body work done, but some additional minor body work is needed to make it a cream puff. There is some rust here and there (including under the wood paneling) and there is also a dent on the rear passenger side trim-behind door and the dent in the back next to rear tailgate window (pictured). I never cared about the exterior blemishes. I just decided to drive it and pull my pop-up camper with it (only twice). It runs and drives great with the bullet proof 5.0. And I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere. The AC needs a charge, and the power antenna motor works, but the antenna doesn't go all the way down. The temp, sending unit is a little faulty (says the car is running hotter than it is) because it isn't-had it checked. The only other issue is, the heat works sporadically. From what I understand, it is the heat exchange valve that needs to be addressed...which is common in these cars. The radiator and heater core have been fully flushed with new thermostat. The tires are like brand new & the rims are in amazing condition. Also, I just put a brand new battery in it. The car should pass inspection with no issues. It is the most comfortable ride I've ever had. And is a true 9 passenger, with the unique seats in the back. Everyone loves riding in the back (especially my son)! These cars continue to go up in value. Here is a change to get one at a very reasonable starting price. The car is complete (nothing missing and even has the original radio) I even just had a U-Haul tow hitched installed, that cost $300.00. There is no title with this car, since NH doesn't require a title for vehicles over 15 years old. However, I will provide the current registration & a letter from NH DMV stating this, which should be all you need. Bid with confidence, check my feedback. Lots of thumbs up and comments on this car that I will miss. A local paper even did an article on it. Good luck!

NHTSA investigating Ford's solution to May 2014 power steering recall

Tue, Apr 7 2015

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating a complaint that Ford's response to a May 2014 recall of the 2008 to 2011 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner doesn't quite go far enough to solve a troubling power-steering problem. Roughly a year ago, Ford recalled nearly a million vehicles after it was found that a problem with the torque sensor's communication with the power steering control module could cut steering assistance for drivers. While manual steering would still be available, the problem was enough to ask drivers to report in to have the PSCM inspected, and if necessary, replaced (along with the torque sensor, or in dramatic cases, the entire steering column). That would only happen, though, if trouble codes were being thrown. If there weren't any problems, dealers were told to simply update the PSCM's software so that any issues between it and the torque sensor would simply throw a visual and audio warning – power steering would still be maintained. The petitioner claimed that following the recall work, he still experienced a problem with the torque sensor. According to NHTSA, a claim was made that Ford didn't go far enough in its solution to the problem, and that "the software update itself may in fact cause further issues with the affected vehicle's power steering, causing it to fail, and ultimately requiring replacement of the torque sensor or entire steering column." The petition was filed in early February and is now officially being looked into by NHTSA.

NHTSA closes rollaway investigation into 1.56M Ford SUVs

Mon, 11 Mar 2013

It's taken four years of study, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finally closed the books on its investigation into rollaway accusations surrounding 1.56-million Ford SUV models.
The probe, which centered on the 2002-2005 Ford Explorer, 2002-2005 Mercury Mountaineer and 2003-2005 Lincoln Aviator, ends without the federal agency calling for a recall. According to The Detroit News, the investigation was closed due to a "low number of complaints" - NHTSA documented 180 such complaints that resulted in 14 crashes and six minor injuries, but the number of incidents have been slowing. The suspected defect rate for the trucks' automatic transmissions was found to be 4.4 per 100,000 units, and the brake-shift interlock mechanism failure rate was judged to be even lower at 3.4 per 100k.

Junkyard Gem: 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham 4-Door Pillared Hardtop

Tue, Nov 7 2023

Ford's Mercury Division debuted the Marquis in the 1967 model year, as a sporty coupe based on a stretched Ford LTD chassis. When the LTD got an update for 1969, so did the Marquis, and production of that generation of the top-of-the-line Mercury continued through 1978 (the Grand Marquis hit streets the following year). The 1969-1978 Marquis was a big, imposing land yacht, and the Brougham version came absolutely loaded with affordable luxury. Today's Junkyard Gem is a Marquis Brougham from the first year of the Malaise Era, found in a Phoenix self-service car graveyard recently. This car appears to have spent decades sitting outdoors in one of the harshest climates in the country, and so it's in rough shape. The vinyl top received the full thermonuclear treatment and is mostly obliterated by now. The interior got thoroughly cooked as well. Still, its original opulence shines through if you use some imagination. What hurts is that this car was packed with most of the good options, including the mighty 460-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) V8 engine with four-barrel carburetor. The price for the 460 was just $76 in this car, or around $548 in today's money. The base engine was a 429 (7.0-liter). Power numbers were way down for 1973 when compared to a couple of years earlier, partly as the result of tightening emissions standards but mostly due to the switch from gross to net power ratings that began midway during 1971 and was completed by the end of 1972. This engine was rated at 202 horsepower and 330 pound-feet. The only transmission available was a three-speed automatic. We can assume that the original buyer of this car and its single-digit fuel economy had a rough time when the OPEC oil embargo hit in the fall of 1973. Believe it or not, air conditioning was not standard equipment on the '73 Marquis Brougham (you had to move up to a Lincoln for that). This one even has the automatic temperature control feature, adding a total of $508 to the cost of this car (about $3,661 in 2023 dollars). That AM/FM/8-track radio—or, in fact, any radio—was an extra-cost option as well, with a price tag of $363 ($2,616 after inflation). The MSRP for the 1973 Marquis Brougham sedan (known as a "pillared hardtop" thanks to the frameless window glass) was $5,072, which comes to $36,555 in today's dollars. Obviously, its out-the-door cost would have been much higher with all the options.
