This car was bought at a high line sale in Illinois approximately 3-4 years ago. Owner had not planned to purchase car until he saw how striking it looked, and the condition it was in. Car has a new intake, and 4 bbl carburetor.

Paint-

  • Beautiful finish

  • Extremely shiny with a mirror like finish

  • Professionally done with a show quality repaint

  • Small nick on the drivers side rocker

  • Small nick behind passenger door handle

  • Unsure the age of the paint, but it matches beautifully all the way around.

Body-

  • Body is extremely straight and very correct

  • Gaps and fits are very uniform(only exception being the right rear corner of the hood could be adjusted down just a bit)

Magnet-

  • Paint depth is fairly uniform

  • Top surfaces appears slightly thicker, which is very common

  • Appears there may have been some minor repairs on the bottom of the front fenders, and possibly around the wheel well lips

  • Appears to not have any obvious areas that show not to be metal.

Bright work-

  • The emblems, door handles, front and rear bumpers, all look like new or extremely well preserved chrome.

  • Stainless that surrounds the window areas all seems to be intact and secured. A few dimples on the top side piece above the windshield, and a slight dimple on the rear window, molding. (see pictures)

  • The side windows are surrounded by stainless that is very shiny and well polished.

  • Only exception being the typical vent windows, vent window frames, rear window frames, antenna base, left front, right rear marker light, and the lower piece below the rear window do have some pitting to the chrome. (see pictures)

Glass-

  • All the glass/windows with the exception of the windshield have the Car Lite logo.

  • Windshield has no noticeable indication of the make.

  • The glass all appears to be very clear showing very little wear.

  • No discoloring or delimitation of the glass, no bulls eyes, cracks, or wiper marks.

Interior-

  • Interior lights make the carpet appear to be faded and discolored in the photos. This is not the case, the carpet still has a very nice color even thought it is not new.

  • Material on the seats appears to be a very soft synthetic or vinyl type material. It does show some natural wear in the photos.

  • The interior appears as it originally looked and designed, with the exception of a steering wheel cover.

  • The coloring looks great on the door panels, as well as the interior components, and doesn’t show an extreme amount of weathering or sun damage.

  • The visors are all good and solid, with good stitching. The backing is solid, with a little pitting on the chrome mounts.

  • The headline material is all fastened well and has good shape without any stitching that is noticeably pulled apart. Headliner does have a one and half inch tear above the right rear interior courtesy light. (see pictures)

  • The rear seats show almost no wear. Some normal wear on driver side and passenger side. (see photos)

  • Dash controls, gauges, ext. show very little wear and look very presentable. There is a bit of wear on the door release handles from normal use. Over all the interior is in great shape, including interior bright work!

Trunk-

  • Car has a spare tire with floor mat and tire cover that matches.

  • Notice the attention to detail on how shiny the paint is on bottom side of the trunk, as well as the exterior.

  • We pulled back the covering, and noticed how solid the floors of the trunk and car still remains.

Tires and Wheels-

  • All four tires are BF Goodrich Radial T/A, the tire sizes are all P215-65R15 mounted on Cragar wheels.

  • Tires and wheels show no curb damage of any type and have no outside wall cracking.

  • All four wheels appear to be flawless and almost new.

  • Tires all have a remaining 9 to 10 32nds of tread left.

Engine and Transmission-

  • Looking at the engine compartment it appears upon inspection much as I would have expected, it did when car was built. With the exception of the replacement battery and shock absorbers, I did not see any noticeable modifications or changes. Title indicated non- actual mileage.

Chassis-

  • Bottom side looks good and solid.

  • There is no rust perforation in the bottom pan, or in any of the supports. With the exception of a small spot of perforation behind the left and right front tire and possibly the inner quarters behind the rear tires, which may have had some work at one time.

  • Looking at the bottom side it is very obvious car has had little exposure, you can see a new starter that was recently installed.

  • The transmission and engine do not show any dripping, just normal light seeping. (see pictures) Looking at the rear part of the car you will see new shock absorbers and complete dual exhaust all the way to the rear. The rear end also has a light oil seeping, but no obvious problems.

Test-

  • Head light covers open and close fully

  • Low and high beams work

  • All four side lamps work

  • Front fender side lamps are working

  • Tail lights work

  • Back up lights work

  • Brake lights (couldn’t do was alone)

  • Left and right side blinkers work front and rear

(including the sequential tail lights as well)

  • Heating works (A/C May need charged)

  • Defrost works

  • Cool to hot lever works

  • Fan works in all three speeds

  • A/C compressor is cycling (air may need recharged)

  • Left side remote is operating however the head of the mirror attached to the stem is loose and need tightened.

  • Amp gauge does not change and stays on zero (must not be working)

  • Gas gauge does move and shows 3/4 full

  • Temperature gauge is working and runs half way between cool and hot

  • AM/FM radio is working

  • Lamp lights are working

  • Horn works

  • Parking brake works and holds car

  • Left and right mat light work

  • Courtesy lights in the back go on upon opening doors or by switch on dash

  • Panel lights go on upon opening the doors or by switch on dash

  • Oil gauge runs 45 to 50 lbs when engine is warm

  • Clock can be set but is not operating

  • The keys work drivers door and trunk, not passenger side

  • The hood and trunk open and close smoothly

  • Wiper switch on dash works in high and low speed

  • Floor operated washer does operate but no fluid flowing

  • All four crank windows go up and down smoothly

  • Vent windows open close and lock correctly

  • Both inside door releases work

  • Drivers ash tray opens and closes and cigarette lighter does work

  • Owners manual

  • Remote drivers mirror

  • XR7 Package

  • Console shift

Test Drive-

Engine starts, runs smoothly, works properly, and transmission is working properly.

Car steers as you would expect, and upon braking there is no pulling or pulsation.

At lower speeds the car doesn’t seem to have as much power steering assist, but not sure if there is an issue or not. On a 60 degree day I ran the air for about 20 min and the temp gauge only moved up 10 percent, so I don’t see any type of cooling issues.

The Auto Connection representative has physically viewed the item being sold. The information comes from the seller and other research sources. Auto Connection is not responsible for any misrepresentation by the seller and/or errors in research results, including history statements of vehicle history, repairs, etc.

This vehicle is being sold AS IS and without a warranty, unless otherwise stated.

Information about serial numbers, engine numbers, and any other codes does not guarantee a vehicle’s authenticity. These codes and numbers are not guaranteed to be the same as the information on the vehicle ID or vin, trim tag, engine block, cylinder heads, transmission, differential, or other components within this vehicle. Auto Connection does not guarantee documentation, authenticity, repairs, mechanical work, titles, odometer discrepancies, matching numbers, stamped engines, casting numbers, or any other codes, tags, or numbers. The potential for reproduction paper documentation exists, as well as restamped engines and reproduced trim/data tags.

We welcome inspections and even have an 8 page professional vehicle inspection form you or your appraiser can use.

The vehicle will remain for sale until a buyer has placed a deposit on it. This deposit is nonrefundable with the exception of the vehicle being severely misrepresented by Auto Connection or the seller, or stipulated in the Bill of Sale.

It is possible that this vehicle will be sold at a higher price than the highest bid (before or after the auction ends), if the reserve is not met. After the sale (if reserve is met or not), Auto Connection must receive at least a 10% deposit (wire transfer or official bank or cashier’s check) within 3 days of the end of the auction (or the Bill of Sale is signed). The high bidder/buyer has 10 days from this time to send the balance in full or final payment and inspect the vehicle (or have a 3rd party professional inspection).

For the most part, the vehicle for sale is not “perfect”. It is unreasonable to assume that every single flaw in the paint, body, engine, etc. or any minor mechanical items (such as a light not working) be considered a reason to refuse the vehicle. Major rust/rot, undisclosed problems with the frame, etc. might constitute a legitimate reason for the buyer to refuse to follow through with the sale. In that situation, Auto Connection would negotiate with the seller and buyer to try to reach an agreeable solution.

The buyer acknowledges that he has had the opportunity to inspect the vehicle to verify it is as listed and represented. He accepts the vehicle with all advertised equipment, options and accessories in "AS IS" condition with any faults or defects. The buyer will bear all future costs of repairs or correcting any defects that exist or may occur in the future. The seller will have no responsibility or liability for any consequential damages or injury caused by any failure or malfunction of the vehicle or any components. Ford recalls Five Hundred, Mercury Montego sedans over fuel tank woes

Mon, 18 Jul 2011

Ford has announced through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is recalling nearly 3,000 examples of its Five Hundred and Mercury Montego (pictured) sedans from the 2007 model year.
The action, which affects 2,945 vehicles, is due to potentially defective welds between the filler neck and the fuel tank, a condition that could result in a fuel leak or the smell of gasoline reaching the occupants. In the worst-case scenario, a leak could cause a fire. Cars with the affected fuel tank problem could see an illuminated dashboard warning light as a result of the evaporative emissions leak being detected.
Ford will inspect and replace the fuel tank at no cost to owners (those who have already had the procedure done at-cost can apply for reimbursement), and the Dearborn automaker will begin notifying Five Hundred and Montego owners beginning August 15. Check out the official NHTSA press release after the jump for further details.

Junkyard Gem: 1991 Mercury Capri XR2

Mon, Jun 5 2023

Just a year after the Mazda MX-5 Miata first went on sale in the United States, Ford's Mercury Division began selling a similarly-priced two-seat convertible here. This was the 1991-1994 Mercury Capri, and I've found an example of the hot-rod turbocharged version in a northeastern Colorado car graveyard. The Capri name has an illustrious history within the Ford Empire. First used on a Lincoln in 1952, it went on to serve as the name for a hardtop version of the early-1960s Ford Consul in the UK, then as the designation for a low-end trim level on the 1966-1967 Mercury Comet. Starting in the 1969 model year in Europe (1970 in North America), Ford began selling the best-known Capri of all: a sporty coupe based on the Cortina, sold through Mercury dealers in the United States but never badged as a Mercury here. Sales of that Capri halted here after 1978 (they continued through 1986 in Europe), but the Mercury Division then moved the name over to its version of the 1979-1986 Ford Mustang. After that, Ford Australia took the Capri name for a new Mazda 323-based sports car beginning in 1989. Then Dearborn decided that an Americanized version of the Australian Capri would be a success on this side of the Pacific, and left-hand-drive Capris began showing up in American Mercury showrooms in late 1990. Today's Junkyard Gem is one of those first-model-year cars, and it's the very rare turbocharged XR2 version. While this car was intended to be a competitor for the Miata, it's really that car's Mazda cousin. Both cars got their power from 1.6-liter versions of Mazda's versatile B engine, though the Capri had the same front-wheel-drive setup as its 323/Protege (and Escort/Tracer) platform siblings. At the same time, Ford was selling Kia-built Mazdas with Festiva (and, a bit later, Aspire) badging, alongside Mazda MX-6s with Probe badges. Just to make things interesting, American Mazda dealers were selling Ford Explorers as Mazda Navajos, while Rangers with Mazda badges followed starting in 1994. The 1990s were Mazda-riffic times at Ford! This car wasn't the first Australian-designed, Mazda-based Ford product sold in the United States. That honor belongs to the 1988-1989 Mercury Tracer, which was based on the same Mazda 323 platform as the Capri and built in Mexico. Later on, the Tracer remained a member of the 323 chassis family but was a nearly identical twin to its Ford Escort sibling.

Auto Show Notebook: Legendary Continental name inspired Lincoln's designers

Thu, Apr 2 2015

What's in a name? A lot for the Continental concept, and it gave Lincoln designers a sense of purpose as they styled the brand's upcoming flagship sedan. "The moment that we told them, it was amazing," Lincoln president Kumar Galhotra said. "They totally got it." "It" is cutting-edge technology wrapped in stately, large-sedan design. It's a nod to Lincoln's storied past, but a signpost for where the brand is heading. Though the Continental name dates to the late 1930s, Lincoln designers avoided making the concept overtly retro. "You can't let it pull yourself back too far in history, but you've got to design a car that lives up to the name," Galhotra said. Speaking to Autoblog on the floor of the New York Auto Show where the Continental formally debuted Wednesday, the Lincoln president reiterated that the car is on track to launch in 2016. It will compete against the Audi A6, Lexus GS, BMW 5 Series and other large luxury sedans. After its debut, the concept in New York will fly to China – another critical market for Lincoln – for display there. It will be replaced in New York by a prototype without an interior. The Continental is the latest high profile play by Lincoln to raise its image with consumers, who have either ignored or forgotten about it amid steep competition in the luxury sector from German and Japanese brands and a potentially resilient Cadillac. Lincoln sales are essentially flat compared with 2014 through the first quarter of this year, with total volume of 21,478 units. The middling start to 2015 comes on the heels of nearly 16-percent sales growth last year spurred by the launch of the MKC and the prominent signing of Matthew McConaughey to star in Lincoln advertisements. Other News, Notes & Quotes Speaking of names, Chevrolet did its homework before deciding to proceed with "Malibu" for its new generation of midsize cars. "We went out and researched it," said Alan Batey, president of General Motors North America. "People actually like the name 'Malibu,'" he said. Admittedly, the current Malibu has struggled in the marketplace against entrenched competitors, Batey said, but he's optimistic its awareness and historical value are assets to the dramatically redesigned sedan."The name's strong," he said. Meanwhile, in other Chevy news, the brand kicked off a new marketing campaign, "Real People, Not Actors" Wednesday. It will show consumers interacting with Chevys and their spontaneous reactions to the vehicles.
