The La Grange, Illinois (Cook County) Police Department is offering the following vehicle for sale:

Silver 1997 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Sedan 2-Door 4.6L with a mileage of 177,160

This is a seized/forfeited vehicle and MUST be sold according to Illinois law: It MUST be sold in an auction-style setting such as eBay.  There is no Buy-It-Now option.  We will NOT accept any trades.  The vehicle will be sold AS-IS and with NO existing warranty.  The vehicle will be sold to the highest bidder after the starting price has been satisfied-there is no reserve on this item.

The vehicle (again) has a mileage of 177,160 miles.  The vehicle has only been driven by us approximately 2-3 miles, but appears to run/operate in okay order other than the power steering needs to be fixed (see below).  The vehicle has power seats, locks, windows, and mirrors in good working order.  The vehicle is equipped with cruise control, however, we did not use it and do not know if it works.  The vehicle has air conditioning that appears to be in good working order.  All signals, lights, lamps, horn, and wipers are in good working order.  The vehicle has a digital clock display on the dashboard.  The vehicle has a brand new spare tire in the trunk.  The vehicle has been in inside storage since October 2011, so it will need a tune up, a new battery, and a good cleaning.  The vehicle has to be jumped to start, however, starts right up.  The vinyl top (roof) appears to be in good condition with only a small tear near the passenger-side rear (see photos).  Lastly, the tires show some wear and will need to be replaced eventually, but are fine for now.

Notable minor damage/scratches/imperfections/things that don't work (see photographs):  The vehicle's power steering is not working, unknown reason.  The vehicle can still be driven, however.  There is no power steering fluid in the vehicle and the power steering fluid cap (under the hood) is missing.  Again, unknown if the pump is bad or fluid will rectify the situation.  The stereo face plate is missing, so there is no radio/stereo in the vehicle.  The vehicle has leather seats, however, there are two tears in the driver's seat (see photos); all other seats appear to be okay.  The driver's-side (D/S) headlight is cracked, but is in working order.  There is minor crash damage to the D/S bumper.  The P/S front 1/4 has a rust spot.  The P/S lower door molding is bent.  The vinyl top has a small tear on the P/S rear.  There is a rust spot on the P/S rear 1/4.  There is a rust spot on the P/S next to the gas tank door.  There are several scratches/scuffs in the front and rear bumper.  Paint is bubbling on the D/S below the rear window.  The top of the antenna is broken.  The trunk button in the glove box does not work.  The tires appear fine for now, but will eventually need to be replaced (no emergency).  Both rocker panels appear to have rust (not major).  Over all, the vehicle is not in bad condition for it's age.  It shows normal wear-n-tear for it's age.

DISCLAIMER:  The vehicle (again), is a seized/forfeited vehicle and MUST be disposed of according to Illinois law; it MUST be sold in an auction-type setting such as eBay.  There is no Buy-It-Now option and we will NOT accept any trades.  The vehicle is being sold AS IS and with NO existing warranty, neither express nor implied.  BUYER BEWARE:  Due to this being a seized/forfeited vehicle, we do not know a great deal about it, it's history, prior damage, prior maintenance, etc.  Potential bidders are encouraged to view the vehicle in person prior to placing a bid, as there may be defects or undetected problems wit the vehicle that we are unaware of.  Potential bidders may have an independent inspection completed on the vehicle at their own expense and prior to the bidding process.  The winning bidder is responsible for the pick up of the vehicle or making arrangements with a private shipping service at their own expense; we will NOT deliver the vehicle.  All sales are FINAL, NO price adjustments will be given, and returns will NOT be accepted.  We have tried to describe the vehicle as completely and accurately as possible, however, we will NOT be responsible for undetected problems, incorrect specs, etc.

Should you have any questions or would like to view the vehicle in person, please contact me through eBay email, ask a question through the auction site, or telephone Sgt. Cimbalista at TX 708-579-2334 and follow the prompt.  I am currently working 7:00am-3:00pm (CST).  If I am unavailable at the time of your call, please leave me a voice mail and I will return your call as soon as I am available.  The winning bidder may pay in full upon pick up of the vehicle with either cash or a certified bank check only, at which time a bill of sale and clear title will be provided.  We do accept payment through PayPal as well.  Pick up of the vehicle should be completed within seven (7) days OR please make arrangements with me if you need additional time for the pick up.  Good luck!!

Junkyard Gem: 1981 Mercury Cougar XR-7

Sun, May 24 2020

The story of the Mercury Cougar involves more plot twists and unexpected digressions than that of just about any other Detroit car, with successive Cougar generations based on the Ford Mustang (1967-1973), the Ford Torino and/or Thunderbird (1974-1979), various Fox Fords including the Thunderbird (1980-1988), the MN12 Thunderbird/Lincoln Mark VIII (1989-1997), and the Ford Mondeo (1999-2002). There were wagon and sedan Cougars for brief periods, just to confuse everybody, and the rakish XR-7 Cougars sometimes lived on different platforms from their ordinary non-XR-7 counterparts. I think the Late Malaise Era Fox XR-7s are among the most interesting of the bunch, so I was quite excited to spot this tan-over-gold '81 in a Denver yard. I tried to count the number of screaming-cat badges on and in this car and gave up once I hit a dozen. The steering wheel, door panels, C pillars, center console, and — of course — the hood ornament all boast snarling felines. Earlier Cougars had emblems showing full side views of stalking catamounts, but the Cougar logo for the 1980s showed just the head. This car got the optional center console, which I hear is quite a rarity. You had to pay $174 extra (that's around $513 in 2020 dollars) for an AM/FM/cassette audio system in the '81 Cougar, but at least the air conditioning was standard equipment. Believe it or not, thieves used to steal these radios. Kumpf Lincoln-Mercury still exists in Englewood (as Landmark Lincoln), and the yard that now houses this car can be found just 15 miles up Broadway on the north side of Denver.  The padded landau roof hasn't fared so well beneath the fierce Colorado sun, but overall this car seems very solid. Sadly, only the Mustangs and (once in a long while) Fairmonts get much love from the Fox Ford crowd these days. Three Mercury "wire wheel" hubcaps and one from a Lincoln. The base engine in the 1981 XR-7 was the "Thriftmaster" 200-cubic-inch (3.3-liter) straight-six, but very few XR-7 buyers would have refrained from checking the box for one of the two optional Windsor V8s. I can't tell if we're looking at the 255-cubic-inch (4.2-liter) version or the 302-cubic-inch (5.0-liter) one here, but real-world drivers might not have noticed the difference between the 120-horse 255 and the 130-horse 302, anyway. The non-XR-7 Fox Cougars had five-speed manual transmissions as base equipment (which nobody wanted), but all 1981 XR-7s had automatics.

Petrolicious shows Mercedes 280SL as architecture in motion

Wed, Jun 17 2015

While still an absolute beauty today, the design of the pagoda-roof W113 Mercedes-Benz SL was revolutionary when it debuted. Moving away from the soft curves of the previous SL models, the all-new generation brought an upright, angular shape that was as much architectural as automotive. In the latest video from Petrolicious, owner and architect Daniel Monti expounds on the inspiration that he gets from his 1969 280SL's fantastic styling. The roof is the most famous design feature of this generation of SL. Look at the top from the front or back, and you can see a gentle, downward arc that evokes the look of a pagoda. That one styling element is also a fabulous counterpoint to a vehicle that is largely more angular than curvaceous. Petrolicious wonderfully illustrates how some of the SL's form-follows-function design aesthetic can be found in the architect's work in this video's heaping helping of mid-century modern goodness.

Junkyard Gem: 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis LS

Thu, Nov 24 2022

We've all been seeing the instantly familiar Ford Crown Victoria P71 Police Interceptor on North American roads for what seems like forever, though in fact the very first of the aerodynamic Crown Vics didn't appear until a mere 31 years ago. Yes, after more than a decade of boxy LTD Crown Victorias, Dearborn took the late-1970s-vintage Panther platform and added a brand-new, Taurus-influenced smooth body and modern overhead-cam V8 engine, giving us the 1992 Ford Crown Victoria. The rule was, since 1939, that (nearly) every Ford model needed a corresponding Mercury, and so the Mercury Division applied different grille and taillights and the rejuvenated Grand Marquis was born. Here's one of the first of those cars to be built, now residing in a Denver-area self-service boneyard. The Marquis name goes respectably far back, to the late 1960s and a Mercurized version of the Ford LTD hardtop. The Grand Marquis began life as the name for an interior trim package on the 1974 Marquis Brougham (also LTD-based), eventually becoming a model in its own right for the 1979 model year. Today's Junkyard Gem came off the Ontario assembly line in March 1991, making one of the very first examples built. For 1992 (and through 2011), the Grand Marquis was a Crown Victoria with slightly enhanced bragging rights. This one has the top-grade LS trim, with an MSRP of $20,644 (that's about $44,370 in inflation-adjusted 2022 dollars). The corresponding Ford-badged model (built on the same assembly line by the same workers) would have been the Crown Victoria LX, which actually cost a bit more: $20,987 ($44,910 now). The very cheapest civilian 1992 Crown Vic cost just $19,563 ($42,045 today). There weren't any powertrain differences between the Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis in 1992. The only engine available was this Modular 4.6 SOHC V8, rated at either 190 (single exhaust) or 210 (dual exhaust) horsepower. The transmission was a four-speed automatic with overdrive. How many miles are on this one? Can't say! Based on the worn-out interior, I'm going to guess 221,719 miles passed beneath this car's wheels during its 32-plus years on the road. I've seen some very high-mile Police Interceptors, of course, including one with 412,013 miles, but Ford didn't go to six-digit odometers in the Grand Marquis until a bit deeper into the 1990s. Thanks to flawed speech-to-text applications on smartphones, the Grand Marquis is known as the "Grandma Keith" to many of us today.
