1971 Mercury Cougar XR7 2 door coupe.

Equipment includes power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, automatic transmission, am radio (works), 351 with 2 bbl carburetor.

This car is usable as-is, but with some minor cosmetic improvements could make a very nice car.  It is complete, but needs a new vinyl top and new door panels. The dash pad is cracked so you may want to do something about it too.  Needs a good cleaning.  Very minimal amount of rust behind the passenger side wheel well.  Has dings, dents, and scrapes.  Overall this is a very solid car.  Trunk floor and floor pans seem good.  Metal under vinyl top is good without any rust issues.

We recently had the following items replaced / maintenance performed on the car: new gas tank, fuel pump, carb has been rebuilt, new plugs, fuel filter, brake rotors and pads, and new headlight dimmer switch.

The turn signals work; however, the left rear signal must be turned on and off manually at the stalk (to make it blink) - sequencer does not work properly.  The right side turn signal / sequencer works fine.  Horn is not working (have not tried to diagnose).  Three of the four hubcaps are included (not shown in photos).

We have taken many pictures of the Cougar but are limited to the number we can include in the listing.  So we do have more - please ask for others.

We have a clear title (in our names) and keys.

Mileage indicated in the listing details is not accurate.

E-mail requests for additional pictures.  (We have lots more photos but are limited to 12 for this listing.)

There is NO SHIPPING for this car unless you as buyer arrange for it via a third party shipper.  This is a running and driving car, but we have not personally driven it any distance so cannot guarantee its roadworthiness.

Buyer is responsible for all costs of delivery/pick up.  Seller will cooperate as much as possible regarding pickup.

We are located in Southwest Missouri, within an hour of both Joplin and Springfield, Missouri, near Hwy 60, South of I-44.  The zip code for a town nearby is 65605.

Please remember that your bid is a contract.  $500 down payment due within 3 days of end of auction. (NO PayPal unless arranged in advance.)  50% of purchase price must be paid within 7 days of auction's end.  Balance of payment is due within 14 days of the end of the auction - no exceptions.  Time frame for removal is somewhat flexible, but we'd like to have the car picked up within 30 days.  (Please give us a couple days' notice before pickup.)

The car is for sale locally so we reserve the right to end the auction at any time.

See our other listings for additional items. We appreciate you taking the time to look at this auction!

Sold as-is.  All sales final.  No refunds.

NHTSA advances investigation of Ford Crown Victoria headlights

Sat, Aug 15 2015

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is opening a preliminary evaluation into reports of suddenly failing headlights on 517,945 examples of the 2003-2005 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. The government started looking into this problem in April when the North Carolina Consumers Council filed a defect petition with the agency. Now, the inquiry has moved to the next step. According to NHTSA's documentation (as a PDF), it examined its own database and worked with Ford to come up with a total of 3,609 complaints of the front lighting control module suddenly failing. When this happens, drivers lose the low-beam headlights, but the high-beams can be used by holding the stalk. Sometimes turning the switch off and on fixes the issue. Additionally, there are 15 allegations of crashes, and one reported shoulder injury. NHTSA's preliminary evaluations "evaluate the scope, frequency, and consequence of the alleged defect" and don't necessarily lead to a recall. NHTSA looked into this problem once before in 2008 and 2009 and decided that a recall wasn't necessary. Ford also extended the warranty on the front lighting control module for these vehicles. INVESTIGATION Subject : Loss of headlights Date Investigation Opened: AUG 10, 2015 Date Investigation Closed: Open NHTSA Action Number: PE15028 Component(s): EXTERIOR LIGHTING All Products Associated with this Investigation Vehicle Make Model Model Year(s) FORD CROWN VICTORIA 2003-2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS 2003-2005 Details Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company SUMMARY: After receiving a defect petition (DP15002) concerning the loss of headlights and other exterior lighting in model year (MY) 2003-2005 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) complaints received from consumers and identified a total of 605 reports (for all submission dates) alleging headlight failure. The complaints indicate failures of both low beam headlights typically while driving, a defect condition that was evaluated under a prior ODI investigation (PE08066). Most consumer VOQs indicate that the headlights failed suddenly and without warning leaving the driver with no forward lighting, however some report the headlights flickered or dimmed prior to turning off. In some cases drivers were able to turn the headlights back on after a period of time while others reported the headlights would not come back on at all.

Curtain officially comes down on Mercury as dealers remove signage

Mon, 03 Jan 2011

The process of shutting down the Mercury is complete. Ford officially made the decision to close its mid-level brand in June of 2010. In the months that followed, Ford offered its dealers money to stop selling the cars, with production shutting down in September. The last Mercury, a Mariner, rolled off the assembly line in the beginning of October and former spokesperson Jill Wagner said her good-byes to both the car and her job. Now the last piece of the brand has come down as dealers are removing any and all Mercury signage from their lots.

Ford Announces Free Brake-Pad Offer If Customers Stop By Dealers

Mon, Aug 4 2014

These days, when you buy a new car, it's not unreasonable to expect a certain period of free maintenance to come along as well. Sometimes this is through the life of the warranty, in other cases a little less. But Ford Motor Company is going beyond those deals for at least one part of its cars. As of now, if you buy a set of Motorcraft brake pads for a Ford, Lincoln or Mercury model, you get free replacements for as long as you own the vehicle. The offer is good at Ford or Lincoln dealers and Quick Lane Tire & Auto Centers. "We will replace the pads for as long as you own the vehicle," said Elizabeth Weigandt to Autoblog. She did clarify that the Motorcraft pads are generally for models from the '90s or newer. Also, to take advantage of this program, a person must return to the same dealer each time to get the free parts. Of course, Ford isn't just handing out brake pads to anyone who walks by; there are certain stipulations. First, the components have to be worn down to less than three millimeters to be eligible, and the buyer still has to pay for the labor to install them. If the model is used as a fleet vehicle for commercial purposes like as a taxi or limousine, this offer also doesn't apply; the same thing for racecars. On the plus side, if you recently bought a set of pads from one of the participating locations, you're still in luck. The deal covers parts purchased as of July 1. "This program reflects our commitment to providing customers with an excellent ownership experience regardless of the age of their vehicle," said Frederiek Toney, President of Ford Customer Service, in the company's announcement of the offer. Scroll down to read the all the details.
