1970 Mercury Cougar Xr-7 Xr7 Xr 7 Original Oem 351 C 2v Daily Driver Nice Rare on 2040-cars
Lexington, Kentucky, United States
Up for auction is a pretty nice 1970 Mercury XR-7 Cougar. This car is in pretty good shape. The whole car is original except for the wheels and paint. The interior of the car is in excellent shape and is all original. Everything works except for the clock and gas gauge. All other interior lights, switches and gauges work as they should. It has sequential turn signal lights and they work as they should also. There are some dings here and there and a couple of scratches. The top will need replacing as well, the metal under the rear of the back window is soft and will probably need minor repair, the rest of the top seems to be fine as I banged around on it and poked. Minor cosmetic flaws is all this car has. It runs excellent always fires right up. I would not hesitate to drive this car to California if it were not for the price of gas. Currently the car is driven almost every nice day. It does not smoke, tick, lag, hesitate, miss or do that dieseling upon shut off. Temp runs right in the middle of the gauge. Oil pressure is good, at idle about 15psi or so, on acceleration about 60psi. It has a 2bbl carb, 351 Cleveland engine, it has a small oil drip coming from somewhere, will leave about a quarter sized oil spot if left for a few days and not driven. The radiator has been redone, cleaned flushed, small pin hole repaired, and painted. The water pump is one week old as is the new timing plate gasket, and thermostat. It has brand new tires, and new tie rods. There is 82000 miles on it, on its third owner(we think). All owners have taken great care of the car over its life. As far as we know, it was bought in New Jersey new, and owned by that man until about 10-15 years ago when it went to Oklahoma and has been until a few months ago when it came to Kentucky. The exhaust is also newer and in good shape, done with galv pipe, and flowmasters I believe. It sounds great. The headlight diaphrams will need to be replaced, usually about 5 min after shutdown the headlights will roll back open, but as soon as it starts up, they close. The passenger door latch mechanism will also need adjustment as that door sometimes is a little tricky to open from the outside. The latch inside works fine, always. It is also missing the remote mirror knob. As I said before every problem with the car is cosmetic. This can be driven every day as you collect the little pieces for it, and get to paint and top, or can be driven just fine as is. This is a great looking car, up close you can see the minor flaws, but you cant tell from a short distance back. It looks as if it may have bumped something at some point and the bumper could use adjustment, but it tracks perfectly straight. It was aligned when the new tires were put on it. There is a little rust on it, as you can see in the pictures, just your typical American rust spots starting, all can be saved. Rocker panels are fine. Underside is pretty clean, just surface rust, floors are solid as is the trunk, no holes, very solid. This car presents very well and always turns heads, and as I said earlier, runs excellent. This is a gret car for someone who is looking for an easy project, to flip or have a lot of fun in. Easy driver project. Drives great.
I am selling this car for a friend, I have been the main mechanic to work on this car in Kentucky and made all of the other choices with the car mechanically. Other than the minor cosmetic flaws and the small mechanical issues, this car is, as far as I can tell, tip top running condition. Im sure there is a couple little things I have missed, but overall I am giving my best description of the car that I can. I went over this car before my friend bought it, and I was the green light for him to purchase it. I would have bought the car myself if I had the money. I really cant state enough good things about this car. It is very fun, and a joy to drive. Shipping of the car is fine, but you are to choose the shipper and do all the leg work, we will assist the driver in loading or whatever they need, and be present upon pickup. Or as I suggest fly in and drive the car home if you are close enough. Direct all questions to me, and if there is something I cannot clarify, then I will refer you to the owner. Please feel free to ask any questions, Thanks for looking and good luck. |

Junkyard Gem: 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis LS
Sat, Jan 21 2023Ford's now-defunct Mercury Division first began using the Marquis name in 1967, on a sporty full-size hardtop based on the Ford LTD, then began offering the Grand Marquis beginning in the 1979 model year. These big, boxy luxury sedans were replaced by big, curvy luxury sedans (on the same platform) starting with the 1992 model year, so today's Junkyard Gem is one of the very last squared-off Grand Marquises ever built. The 1991 Grand Marquis (or "Grandma Keith," as many refer to it today) looks nearly identical to its 1979 predecessor at a glance, just as the 2011 model doesn't differ much from the 1992 model. Ford saw no reason to follow short-lived fashion trends with its simple, sturdy rear-wheel-drive sedan. Only two Grand Marquis trim levels were available for 1991: the base GS and the (somewhat) upscale LS. The former listed at $18,741 and the latter at $19,241, which comes to about $41,494 and $42,601, respectively, in inflated 2022 dollars). This interior would have seemed comfortingly familiar to a 1968 (or even 1958) Mercury owner time-traveling to 1991. This is the optional "full grain leather seating surface," which cost an extra $489 (about $1,083 today). Dig those opera lights! Air conditioning was standard equipment in the 1991 Grand Marquis and its wagon counterpart, the Colony Park. The engine is the good old pushrod 5.0-liter Windsor V8, which would be replaced by a far more modern 4.6-liter SOHC mill in the '92 Grand Marquis. This engine was rated at 180 horsepower. A four-speed automatic was the only transmission available. The early 1990s ended up being the last gasp for padded vinyl roofs being considered mainstream equipment on new Detroit cars; this one was called the "Formal Coach" roof and cost an additional 725 bucks ($1,605 now). Such roofs were still available on a few cars later in the decade, but their time had passed. Why would such a clean Grandma Keith end up in a place like this? That's easy: it got T-boned directly into the right front wheel, mangling the body and bending up the suspension. This damage might have been worth fixing when the car was five years old, but it's a write-off when it happens to a 31-year-old Ford Panther. 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis Commercial - Savings Ad The granddaddy of them all, and on sale in South Texas! Has the Mercury Marauder gotten better with age?
Fri, Oct 23 2015In the early 2000s Mercury desperately wanted to develop some edge for its brand – seemingly stuck between a quasi-premium, quasi-performance space in the Ford Universe. The Marauder is perhaps the most famous of the vehicles that resulted from those efforts, and is rapidly approaching Modern Classic status, today. Effectively a murdered out Grand Marquis with some updated trim pieces – what are company parts bins for, if not raiding? – the Marauder looked convincingly like a bad guy car. The 4.6-liter V8 under its hood that had been breathed on by engineers for a little more power, kicking out 302 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque from the factory. Not exactly Ferrari-baiting numbers, but it'd give your local cop's car a run for its money. Being a wild child of the last decade, of course our friends at MotorWeek had it on the program. What better way to test your mean-mugging muscle sedan than with John Davis' tanned and steady hands?
NHTSA investigating 500k Ford and Mercury cars for lighting failures
Mon, Apr 6 2015The Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis might be long gone as new models in showrooms, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration might check them out yet again for a potential problem. At the urging of North Carolina Consumers Council, the agency may open another investigation into the front lighting control module on vehicles from the 2003-2005 model years, and NHTSA estimates the issue could affect 517,945 vehicles. If the module stops working, it can cause a complete failure of all forward lighting, including the headlights. NHTSA previously investigated the issue in 2008 and 2009 but found no need for a recall, according to Bloomberg. Ford also extended the warranty on the part to 15 years or 250,000 miles. To prompt this new request, the North Carolina Consumers Council received a letter from a woman experiencing the module's failure. Upon further investigation, the council found 604 complaints of this problem on NHTSA's website, including seven crashes. Furthermore, the group has alleged that dealers told customers that the parts to perform the replacement weren't available, despite the extended warranty. According to the government agency, "A defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and make a grant or deny decision." Ford spokesperson Kelli Felker tells Autoblog via email, "We will cooperate with NHTSA, as we always do." You can read the council's complete letter to the Feds in PDF format, here. INVESTIGATION Subject : Loss of headlamp/exterior lighting Date Investigation Opened: APR 01, 2015 Date Investigation Closed: Open NHTSA Action Number: DP15002 Component(s): EXTERIOR LIGHTING All Products Associated with this Investigation Vehicle Make Model Model Year(s) FORD CROWN VICTORIA 2003-2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS 2003-2005 Details Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company SUMMARY: The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received a petition from the North Carolina Consumers Council, Inc. requesting a defect investigation of an alleged defect condition resulting in headlight and/or exterior lighting failure on 2003-2005 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles. The petition letter is attached for review. The petitioner alleges a defect in the lighting control module that powers the headlights which can result in the loss of vehicle headlights and/or all exterior lighting while driving. ODI has previously investigated this issue under PE08-066 which was closed without a defect finding.
