1969 Mercury Cougar Xr7 on 2040-cars
Sammamish, Washington, United States
If you have any questions or would like to view the car in person please email me at: rosemaryrmmada@ukbuilders.net .
This stunning Cougar is one of 4,024 XR7 convertibles built for 1969. It has a rare dark aqua metallic exterior/light aqua interior factory color combination (one of 48 in 1969).
The seat leather is original, whereas carpet, mats and tonneau cover are new.
All chrome trim pieces, including bumpers, grill, hood, deck, belt and wheel lip moldings have been re-chromed,
polished and restored.
The white convertible top (power) works well and is in good condition, with one small area showing wear near
driver rear ¼ window. The original top was black.
Under the hood is an M Code 351 Windsor 4V (factory rated at 290 hp SAE gross) connected to an FMX automatic,
both of which are believed to be original to the car.
A high performance Ford 90X-424A intake manifold, comparable to ones installed on Shelby GT350s of the period,
plus a new Edelbrock 600 cfm carb, are installed.
Running Cat valve covers and oval air cleaner dress up the engine compartment.
Magnum 500s (15x7) with aqua running cat centers are a great fit for this special cat.
The car came with factory AC installed, although today the compressor and other AC parts are stored, but come
with car. AC components under dash are ready for connection at firewall.
Recent new parts include heater core, Pertronix electronic ignition, and power steering system with all correct
hoses and other components.
The suspension has been upgraded with new KYB shocks and a 1” competition handling front sway bar.
The clock has been converted to quartz movement and keeps flawless time.
A Concours Series AM/FM radio with AUX jack for connecting iPods and other devices is installed in the stock
location and connected to speakers/grills at the factory door locations.
Restoration work by previous owner included sandblasting of nearly entire body, hot tanking of major body parts
including doors and rear deck, installation of new floor pans, and application of DP-90 and new paint. Previous
owner also rebuilt the engine with mild performance upgrades, rebuilt the transmission and installed new
parts/systems including brakes, aluminum radiator, headlight vacuum motor, driveshaft and exhaust.
Extra parts including interior and exterior trim, the original air cleaner and valve covers, etc. come with the
car.
An aqua XR7 center console armrest pad is available for purchase separately (the installed armrest pad is from
a standard interior).
The gas filler door bezel with cat on black background is from a 1970 Eliminator (not available in 1969). The
wood gearshift handle is rare.
Both rear quarter panel extensions have "dimples" where the extensions have been overtightened from inside the
trunk -- a sad but somewhat common occurrence for these cars.
Service records since purchase by second owner in 1973, and shop manuals, including chassis, wiring and vacuum
hose diagrams, are included.

Junkyard Gem: 1970 Mercury Cougar
Tue, Oct 10 2017The plot of the Mercury Cougar story took a lot of strange twists and turns during its 35 or so years, from ponycar to immense luxobarge to family sedan to station wagon to Integra competitor. Examples of the first Cougar generation are nearly extinct in American wrecking yards, so I was excited to spot this one in Denver. Lest you shed any tears over this car going to the crusher, know that it was suffering from the ravenous teeth of the Rust Monster long before it got here. The 1967-1970 Cougar was based on the Mustang platform of the same era, and so it was a sleeker and quicker cat than its successors. Still, the longer wheelbase, extra equipment and all the cool-looking bodywork added some heft; the 1970 Mustang hardtop with V8 scaled in at 2,923 pounds, while the 1970 Cougar weighed 3,307 pounds. The current Ford Focus would fit just between those two weights. There was also a mid-cycle refresh in that era, with the '67-'68 and '69-'70 having different exterior styling and interiors. The '69 and '70 had different front end styling as well, with the latter re-adopting the vertical grille slats featured on the earlier model years. The '69 has horizontal slats. The drivetrain and just about everything else of value has been shorn from this car, perhaps before it arrived in this yard. In 1970, a bewildering assortment of V8 engines was available in the Cougar, including a Boss 302, two completely different 351s, and a 335-horse Cobra Jet 428. The base engine was a 351 Windsor making 250 gross horsepower. Since car rooftops mostly don't rust, why would someone cut out this one? Sheet metal needed for patching a leaky shed roof, perhaps? This 2005-2006 Denver Nuggets window sticker indicates that the car was on the street (probably) as recently as 11 years ago. This content is hosted by a third party. NHTSA advances investigation of Ford Crown Victoria headlights
Sat, Aug 15 2015The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is opening a preliminary evaluation into reports of suddenly failing headlights on 517,945 examples of the 2003-2005 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. The government started looking into this problem in April when the North Carolina Consumers Council filed a defect petition with the agency. Now, the inquiry has moved to the next step. According to NHTSA's documentation (as a PDF), it examined its own database and worked with Ford to come up with a total of 3,609 complaints of the front lighting control module suddenly failing. When this happens, drivers lose the low-beam headlights, but the high-beams can be used by holding the stalk. Sometimes turning the switch off and on fixes the issue. Additionally, there are 15 allegations of crashes, and one reported shoulder injury. NHTSA's preliminary evaluations "evaluate the scope, frequency, and consequence of the alleged defect" and don't necessarily lead to a recall. NHTSA looked into this problem once before in 2008 and 2009 and decided that a recall wasn't necessary. Ford also extended the warranty on the front lighting control module for these vehicles. INVESTIGATION Subject : Loss of headlights Date Investigation Opened: AUG 10, 2015 Date Investigation Closed: Open NHTSA Action Number: PE15028 Component(s): EXTERIOR LIGHTING All Products Associated with this Investigation Vehicle Make Model Model Year(s) FORD CROWN VICTORIA 2003-2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS 2003-2005 Details Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company SUMMARY: After receiving a defect petition (DP15002) concerning the loss of headlights and other exterior lighting in model year (MY) 2003-2005 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) complaints received from consumers and identified a total of 605 reports (for all submission dates) alleging headlight failure. The complaints indicate failures of both low beam headlights typically while driving, a defect condition that was evaluated under a prior ODI investigation (PE08066). Most consumer VOQs indicate that the headlights failed suddenly and without warning leaving the driver with no forward lighting, however some report the headlights flickered or dimmed prior to turning off. In some cases drivers were able to turn the headlights back on after a period of time while others reported the headlights would not come back on at all.
Translogic drives wood-burning Mercury Beaver XR-7
Sun, 31 Jul 2011You read the title right, we're talking about the Mercury Beaver XR-7. No, Mercury never officially built a car called the beaver. This is the brainchild of upstate New Yorker Chip Beam, who owns and operates Beaver Energy, LLC. It runs on gases created by wood pellets fermented in a 2,400-degree furnace and fed to a supercharged Ford 4.6-liter V8.
By all accounts, it gets down the road just fine, and has pretty close to full power. The best part is, you can grow the fuel yourself and avoid patronizing big oil, if that's your thing. The only drawback that we can see to the Mercury Beaver XR-7 is the PVC pipe jungle occupying the space that would be the trunk under normal circumstances.
Still, if you're willing to smell like a mountain man and look like a bad Back to the Future knockoff, this ride is right up your alley. Click past the jump to see Translogic's take on this modified Merc.
