Ok, so if you're looking at this Cougar you must know at least a little about them. Well, this car is one I can almost guarentee you have never heard of. Impossible you say? Have you ever heard of a Golden Cougar? I do not mean the gold paint that was a color option but am instead refering to the emblem on the rear quarter post. I the time I have owned the car I have spent countless hours on the internet and at car shows and such trying to find anyone who has heard of one. And to this date I have not found a soul. I called Dearborn and have got a Marti report. Both of which can not tell me why it's called a Golden Cougar. I bought this car from an older lady in Nevada and drove it here to Colorado. I believe I am the second owner but can not prove this. She used to live in Colorado Springs which is about 1 1/2 hours south of Denver. This is where the car was sold by the original Mercury dealer. She drove the car back and forth to Nevada to visit her sister or cousin ( I can't remember which ). She then moved to Nevada and then would drive back and forth here to Colorado. Most of the miles are highway miles I was told. She was a very sweet lady. I bought the car with the intention of restoring it to it's original glory but have since decided to let someone else have a go at it. Just don't have the time I guess. Some time ago I made the fairly short trip down to Colo. Springs and went to the largest library I could find to see if I could find something on microfish, an advertizement of any kind about the car. After several hours of searching I did find the advertizement. With the help from the librian we got a copy of the newspaper add. Although it's not the best,it's the best we could do. And it does tell a bit about the car. The add states that the is a 1969 1/2. Quote; Again in 1969 as in the past, Bob Foss  has gone to great lengths to bring to the people of Colorado Springs and Southern Colorado a very special value. These "Golden Cougars" represent a define savings in equiptment and options otherwise impossible plus the fact that you will be driving an original creation built especially for you.

The car does need to be restored. But is a great candidate for it. I was paid a visit by a local Cougar club member and he told me a couple things I did not know. The chrome piece in the front of the lower rocker trim is typical of the sport packages as well as the drivers side sport mirror. The door glass appears to the thicker than normal. And of course the Golden Cougar emblem on the rear post. This emblem would be absolutely non replaceable. And they are in great shape.
The car has been partially repainted. The hood and passenger front fender you can tell are from a red car. The rear quarters were both repaired, probably from rust. And were not done with much quality in mind. And now there has been hit on the drivers rear quarter where the old bondo is breaking out. There is not alot of rust under this car though. There is some starting by one of the top bolts holding the drivers front fender on. The lower corners of the doors are starting to blister and the area behind the rear glass outer trim is starting to rust a bit. It has a landau top that is weathered and cracked and some moisture has gotten inside these small cracks, so there will be some surface rust on the top under the landau vinyl.
The millage reads just over 98500 I think these are original miles but cannot be certain. It appears to have original 351 windsor engine and FMX automatic transmission. Still runs pretty strong. The transmission.is leaking fluid where the linkage goes into the trans.case. But can still be driven off and on trailers and such. The rear end seems fine and the front end seems to have had some work done to it but all the rubbers are very dry and needs to be completely gone through. Brakes are fine. Gas tank is good but could really use a dual exhaust system instead of the stock single exhaust.
The interior is fair. The dash is cracked. The headliner is pretty much shot. The seats are great with the exception of the top left of the drivers seat. Rears are almost perfect. Carpet is very good. Door panels are fair. All lights work with the exception of the dash indicator bulb for the left turn signal. Heat and radio work fine. Windshield is cracked but all other glass is fine. Door seals need replaced but all others are ok.
I know it might appear that I've listed more bad things than good about this car but I believe in describing as much as possible. This car would make the best restoration project and really doesn't need that much to restore. Once the rear quarters were replaced the rest would just fall into place without breaking the bank. Everything is there. If I have left anything out or if you would like info about a particular area of the car just write and I'll do my best to answer any questions.

This is the must have car for any Cougar collector.

More than 800,000 Fords recalled for faulty Takata airbags

Thu, Jan 12 2017

The Basics: Ford is recalling about 816,000 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles built in the US for faulty passenger-side Takata airbags. The affected vehicles were all built in North America, with 654,695 recalled vehicles in the US and 161,174 vehicles in Canada. A wide variety of cars, trucks, and SUVs are affected. This is a planned expansion of an earlier recall. 2005-09 and 2012 Ford Mustang 2005-06 Ford GT 2006-09 and 2012 Ford Fusion 2007-09 Ford Ranger 2007-09 Ford Edge 2006-09 and 2012 Lincoln Zephyr and Lincoln MKZ 2007-09 Lincoln MKX 2006-09 Mercury Milan The Problem: Like every other Takata recall, the problem rests with faulty airbags that can potentially expel shrapnel, injuring or killing vehicle occupants. Millions of vehicles from dozens of automakers are affected, so don't think that Ford is alone on this one. Injuries/Deaths: Ford stated in a press release that there have been no injuries or death linked to the vehicles in this recall. All in all, 11 deaths and 180 injuries across a variety of automakers have been linked to these Takata airbags. The fix: Ford will contact owners soon, and the affected vehicles will have their airbags replaced by a dealer at no additional charge. If you own one: Wait for contact from Ford, then head to the dealer to get a replacement. If you're wondering if your vehicle is affected, go to this Ford website and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The recall reference number is 17S01. Ford recalls over 953,000 vehicles to replace Takata airbag inflators

Fri, Jan 4 2019

DETROIT — Ford is recalling more than 953,000 vehicles worldwide to replace Takata passenger airbag inflators that can explode and hurl shrapnel. The move includes over 782,000 vehicles in the U.S. and is part of the largest series of recalls in U.S. history. Included are the 2010 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, the 2010 and 2011 Ford Ranger, the 2010 to 2012 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, the 2010 and 2011 Mercury Milan, and the 2010 to 2014 Ford Mustang. Some of the recalls may be limited to specific geographic areas of the U.S. Takata used the chemical ammonium nitrate to create an explosion to inflate airbags. But it can deteriorate over time due to heat and humidity and explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister designed to contain the explosion. At least 23 people have been killed worldwide and hundreds injured by the inflators. Ford says it doesn't know of any injuries in vehicles included in this recall. Dealers will replace the inflators. Ford will notify owners about the recall starting on Feb. 18, and the company has replacement parts available for dealers to order, said spokeswoman Monique Brentley. In previous Takata recalls, parts availability had been an issue. Owners can go to this Ford website and key in their vehicle identification number to see if their cars and SUVs are being recalled. The same information will be available soon at the NHTSA recall website. More than three years after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took over management of recalls involving Takata inflators, one third of the recalled inflators still have not been replaced, according to an annual report from the government and a court-appointed monitor. The report says 16.7 million faulty inflators out of 50 million under recall have yet to be replaced. And 10 million more inflators are scheduled to be recalled this month, including the Ford vehicles. Safety advocates said the completion rate should be far higher given the danger associated with the inflators. The recalls forced Takata of Japan to seek bankruptcy protection and sell most of its assets to pay for the fixes. The inflators grow more dangerous as they get older because ammonium nitrate deteriorates due to high humidity and cycles from hot temperatures to cold. The most dangerous inflators are in areas of the South along the Gulf of Mexico that have high humidity. Related Video:

Junkyard Gem: 1973 Mercury Montego MX Brougham Sawzall Convertible Edition

Fri, Apr 21 2017

You know how it goes— the weather is warm, you want to do some top-down driving, and you lack a proper convertible... but you do have a hooptie Detroit car on one side of the garage and a big ol' Sawzall on the other. Put the two together and you have a Sawzall Convertible, which generally lasts for about one summer before it gets scrapped. Here's a fine example of such a car, photographed in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service junkyard. Most Sawzall Convertibles (yes, it should be called a roadster, but nobody does that) have raw, ragged metal edges, or maybe duct tape over the stumps of the amputated pillars, but someone went to the trouble to weld nice smooth metal covers over the hackage on this one. The windshield is gone. Instead, the windshield frame is ringed by tongue depressors held in place by gooey roofing tar. No, we don't know why. The Montego MX Brougham was a hot-selling personal luxury coupe in its day, selling for $3,041 in 1973. That's just under $17,000 in 2017 dollars. It must have been fun, cruising this thing on Bay Area streets with no roof and a rattle-can spray-bomb job. This one has the optional 400-cubic-inch V8 engine, rated at 171 horsepower. What would this car's original buyer have thought of its fate? This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
