These days we think of Sports Specials as 1969 Cougars with a particular option package, but when Lincoln-Mercury Division introduced the term in '69, it actually referred to a series of unique option groups, ranging from a simple appearance package to the Eliminator. Since most of us are familiar with the Eliminator, this article will focus on the other Sport Specials . . . the Cats nobody knows.
Lincoln-Mercury is known for doing some strange things from a marketing point of view. A case in point were the Dan Gurney Specials in '67 and '68. These consisted mainly of a window decal, "turbo" wheel covers, and a chrome dress up kit for the engine. More of them were "made" at dealerships than at the factory and, while Dan Gurney Specials are interesting, most experts assign no monetary significance to the resale value.
In 1969 L-M was at it again, this time offering a series of "Sports Specials" which allowed buyers to upgrade their Cougars with four model/equipment combinations. Perhaps the best known feature of the Sports Specials are their unique curb moldings. However, a Cougar with Sports Special curb moldings is not necessarily a Sports Special Cougar. These moldings were also sold at dealerships as an add on.
Sports Specials started out as standard or bench hardtops with a basic appearance package that included Turbine wheel covers, E78 X 14 WSW tires, a mid-body paint stripe in black, red or white (in place of dual upper body tape stripes), distinctive curb moldings (with bright die-cast simulated scoops and bright and black ribs extending to the rear wheel opening), and a remote control left-side mirror.

NHTSA and Ford investigating steering issues in Crown Vic, Grand Marquis and Marauder
Fri, 11 Jul 2014There may be more steering woes for the Ford Crown Victoria. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a preliminary evaluation into the Crown Vic and Mercury Grand Marquis from the 2004 to 2007 model years and the Mercury Marauder for the 2004 and 2005 model years because the steering shaft can jam. The issue could potentially affect an estimated 500,000 vehicles.
According to the regulator, there is a possibility that the driver's side heat shield for the exhaust manifold can rust, dislodge, and then wedge into the steering shaft. If this occurs, it leads to a situation where the driver can no longer control the car.
NHTSA has received five complaints of this happening, including one alleged case with an injury. In that situation, the car was driving onto the highway, lost control and rolled over. One occupant was hurt in the accident.
Report: Lincoln getting all of Mercury's ad dollars
Mon, 03 Jan 2011Now that the curtain has closed on Mercury, Ford Motor Company will redirect all of its marketing dollars for the oft-overlooked brand to the Blue Oval's luxury outpost, Lincoln. In speaking to Automotive News, the chairman of the Lincoln National Dealer Council, Bob Tasca, Jr., said, "You'll see a lot stronger presence in the advertising of Lincoln in 2011."
Lincoln spokesperson Christian Bokich reminded AN that the automaker is "preparing the way for seven new or significantly refreshed vehicles" that will be launched over the next four years, and the largest ad blitz in 2011 will focus on the refreshed MKX crossover, as well as the MKZ sedan and its hybrid counterpart. Following that, Lincoln has plans to launch a completely overhauled version of its Navigator SUV, an all-new C-segment vehicle and the overhauled 2013 MKZ, which Tasca says will be "strikingly different from its Ford Fusion sibling."

The Ford #02 Chip Ganassi Racing Riley Mk XXVI Daytona was in a four-car battle early in last year's race, but it eventually was victorious. Forza Motorsport 6 also challenges drivers who download the car to a new Rivals event around Daytona, and the fastest people could win Alpinestars prizes. If you're nostalgic for a classic Daytona racecar, this pack includes Mercury #15 Whistler Radar Cougar XR-7. The V8-powered beast won the IMSA GTO class in the 24-hour event in 1990.
