1968 Mercury Cougar 302 V8 4 speed manual.  I have owned this car since 2011, I have the clean clear Pennsylvania title in my name and ready for immediate transfer.  The odometer is a 5 digit odometer and reads 35xxx,  To the best of my knowledge actual mileage it is 135xxx,   I purchased the cougar from a gentleman in Ohio.  He had the car built in the early 1990's by his good friend who worked as a local racing engine builder(in Ohio).  So the 302 with a holley 4 barrel carb and weiand intake manifold under the hood is very strong good running engine.  Sorry I don't know the engine specs but it runs great, and always starts right up.  The 4.10 gears in the rear and the 4 speed manual transmission make for a fun drive.  Flowmaster mufflers, Hedman headers, Accel coil and distributer.  Mercury cougar embossed valve covers.  The previous owner had a new flywheel, clutch, starter installed and had the gear box redone(I am pretty sure it is a hurst transmission)  All this was done in 2007.  The car has new Magnum 500 wheels with the Mercury man center caps and new tires on the car.  Rear are 16" and fronts 15".   The cars sequential turn signals in the rear work great with updated electronics recently installed.  The hidden headlamp doors also work excellent.  In 2012 a new aluminum radiator and edelbrock water pump were installed on the car.  The car looks good, has small surface rust bubbles on the front of the left fender, small bubble on exterior passenger door, and on the rear deck lid real small spots(They are the exact same size as when I bought the car in 2011, never changed at all)  Some small paint peeling on the quarter panel as well(never changed size or worsened since I purchased he car) There was a small aftermarket spoiler on the deck lid when I got the car and I took it off(wanted the original look), there is a photo of the black rubber plugs I have used to block the small mounting holes.  The all black interior is in excellent condition. original rear seat, fronts were recovered in the early 90's when the car was rebuilt.  The cougar sports deluxe door trim panels.  Also have the cougar floor mats in the car I have found them as reproductions and they look great.  Heater works,  Car originally had ac, but there is no compressor.  Kenwood cd player that is I pod ready along with alpine speakers front and rear in the car, I never turn the radio on, I personally enjoy the sound of the 302 under the hood!!  The vinyl top is in excellent condition, the paint is average for a car that was painted in the early 1990's, pretty straight with no dents or dings this is a great 10 footer.  Paint shines nice, but not a high end paint job.  This is a solid great running Mercury Cougar!  I can supply you with any additional photos you may need.  I have shop manuals for the car and a reproduction owners manual.  She is a great looking car and runs great.  Stored under cover in a heated garage.  The Cougar is ready to drive with no work needed  Wouldn't take much to make a perfect show car, right now it is a very nice driver!!  It is a real head turner.  No warranty expressed or implied, I personally recommend seeing the car in person, but certainly not mandatory.  I can help with loading etc.  $500.00 dollar non refundable deposit due within 24 hours of auction end.  Car is located in Clarion Pennsylvania, 16214.   LOW RESERVE!!

As you can tell in the photographs, this car had minimal miles put on it since the rebuild.  It was driven just enough to maintain it properly, she never sat long periods of time and was always maintained properly when in heated winter storage.

Ford finds flex-fuel engine design plays big role in emissions output

Mon, Jan 6 2014

How bad is ethanol for your engine? There's been a lot of debate on this issue as the US considers upping the biofuel content in the national gasoline supply from 10 percent (E10) to 15 percent (E15). The ethanol industry and some scientists say higher ethanol blends show no "meaningful differences" in new engines while the oil industry says ethanol creates health risks. Researchers working at the Ford Research and Innovation Center decided to take a closer look at how a wide range of gas-ethanol blends - E0, E10, E20, E30, E40, E55 and E80 - affected the emissions coming out of a flex-fuel 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis. To see the full report, printed in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, requires payment, but there is an abstract and Green Car Congress has some more details. The gist is that, "with increasing ethanol content in the fuel, the tailpipe emissions of ethanol, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, methane, and ammonia increased." At least NOx and NMHC emissions decreased. The researchers say that the effects are due to the fuel and "are expected for all FFVs," but that the way that a manufacturer calibrates the engine will affect NOx, THC, and NMOG emissions. It's this last bit that's important, since the researchers found, "Higher ethanol content in gasoline affects several fundamental fuel properties that can impact emissions. ... These changes can have positive or negative effects that can depend on engine design, hardware, and control strategy. In addition to direct emissions impacts, higher ethanol content fuel can also provide more efficient combustion and overall engine operation under part-load conditions and under knock-limited higher-load conditions." So, as we head towards more ethanol in our fuel supply (maybe), manufacturers are going to need to learn how to burn it most efficiently.

Preposed class-action lawsuit targets 'defective' MyFord Touch

Tue, 16 Jul 2013

A national law firm, Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, has filed a proposed class action lawsuit whose presupposition is that MyFord Touch is defective. Specifically, the complaint states that the system - as well as the MyLincoln Touch and MyMercury Touch clones - often freeze, fail to respond to voice or touch commands and have issues connecting to mobile phones.
According to Hagens Berman managing partner Steve Berman, MyFord Touch is a theoretically "brilliant idea" that falls short in actual execution. Said Berman in a press release, "In reality, the system is fundamentally flawed, failing to reliably provide functionality, amounting to an inconvenience at best, and a serious safety issue at worst."
Other MFT issues enumerated within the 41-page filing include problems controlling the window defroster, rear-view camera and navigation system. The suit maintains that Ford is aware of the problem but has yet to submit a workable and acceptable solution to MFT customers. Scroll down if you'd like to read the full press release.

Junkyard Gem: 1995 Mercury Tracer Trio

Sat, Feb 5 2022

With the rise of Radwood, cars with exaggerated characteristics associated with the 1980s and 1990s are cool again. That means some combination of pastel and/or neon colors, squiggly squeezed-from-toothpaste-tube graphics, nonfunctional decklid spoilers, giant TURBO badging, and kicky youth-centric nomenclature are required if you want your wheels to be considered in compliance with the sacred tenets of Radism. I do my best to find rad machinery while crawling around in car graveyards, and since I came of driving age in 1982 I know a bit about the subject. Today's rare Junkyard Gem shows us the Mercury Division's belated attempt to sell fun cars to rad-leaning youngsters: a Tracer Trio, found in a Denver yard a few weeks back. The Trio package added 310 bucks to the cost of the $11,280 base Tracer sedan (that's about $575 on a $20,925 car in 2022 dollars), and it got the hip-and-trendy young buyer a leather-wrapped steering wheel, seven-spoke wheels, a decklid spoiler and these rad fender badges. I'm going to say that the much louder graphics and candy-cane-colored displacement badges on the Pontiac Sunbird W25 out-radded the Tracer Trio by a mile, but then Pontiac generally out-radded everyone in those days. Even Plymouth got into the act with such radness as the Breeze Expresso and Sundance Duster (we'll overlook the anti-rad Horizon Miser here). Perhaps tellingly, Mercury, Pontiac and Plymouth all got the "Old Yeller" treatment not long after the Rad Era ended. The Tracer name always went on Mercuries built on Mazda platforms, starting with the Australia-built, Ford Laser-based 1987-1989 cars and then continuing with Mexico-assembled, Ford Escort-based 1991-1996 cars. That generation of Escort/Tracer was mechanical twins with the Mazda Protege, itself the bridge between the 323 and the Mazda3. Some Tracers got the a 1.8-liter Mazda engine that was related to the Miata's engine, but this one has the pure-Detroit CVH 1.9. You're looking at 88 horsepower right here; the Mazda 1.8 offered 127 horses. At least the original buyer of this car got the base five-speed manual transmission instead of forking over $815 extra (about $1,510 today) for the four-speed slushbox. As a 29-year-old slacker living in San Francisco's Mission District and driving a hooptie '65 Chevy Impala sedan at the time, I would have taken the manual transmission without the Trio package, had I been forced to buy a new Tracer.
