1963 1/2 Mercury COMET S-22 - 260 V8/AT

Long Term Storage/ Barn Find: Low 63,000 miles

Rare S-22 Option HT: HP BUILT 260 V8/4V

The Comet S-22 was built for just a few years, through 1963. The V-8 Comet S-22 was offered as a mid-year, 1963 1/2 OPTION. The S-22 was available in convertible, 2-door sedan and the sporty 2-door hardtop/coupe. This rare S-22 factory V-8 is the highly sought after 2-Dr Hardtop.

THE 1963 S-22 V-8 had a different chassis and suspension design to accommodate the optional 260 V-8. Only the V-8 models had 5-lug wheels. S-22 Option Comets had the S-22 badging, factory bucket seats and center console. The back end was equipped with 3 tail lights instead of 2, and the grill received vertical bars, making it look more aggressive. THIS Comet S-22 was also equipped with optional power steering, drivers side remote mirror, factory woven front seatbelts, all transistor radio & the 260 V-8 grill badging. As the 2-dr hardtop, this Comet looks great with the windows up or down.

TITLE SHOWS- SERIES & BODY STYLE: 8COS22H2 = V8 Comet S22 2dr HT

HISTORY: Over the last few months I have had the car professionally repainted the factory Sultana White. There was no body work to repair, no evidence of any prior accident or repairs on this super straight and solid low mileage car. The interior was the original S-22 Black & Pearl White, with vintage coverings needing replacement. I had the bucket seats professionally done NOS Factory Comet S-22 seat materials. The biscuit pattern design covers are date stamped 1963 underneath, and this is the very last known of this material left in USA. New factory 80/20 woven & padded black carpets were also installed. The mat in the trunk was replaced with a new one. You can see under the hood and trunk the amazing straight and rust free condition of this rare model S-22. Speedometer, gas gauges, turn signals, lights all appear to work fine, the radio does not appear to have power to it so has not been tested.

MECHANICAL: I had the car professionally tuned up with all new spark plugs, wires, gas filters, oil filters & fluid change, etc. We flushed the tank and found the fuel pump canister filter also needed replacement; which we did. The car had upgrades done many years ago, but not that many miles ago such as the Vintage Edelbrock Performer aluminum intake manifold, Holley 4 barrel carb, vintage Ford Motorsport Air Cleaner and fined aluminum valve covers. Engine runs smooth, burns clean and sounds like mild performance cam, I assume from appearance it has had a full, or at least top end rebuild at time vintage performance parts were added. You can see recent water pump, radiator, hoses, transmission cooler & dual exhaust. Even radiator fan looks like new factory Ford blue paint. This car is equipped with Heavy Duty rear shocks & vintage traction bars. All of this was done prior to long term storage. I have recently added the vintage 14” Crager SS 5-spoke wheels with new B F Goodrich Radial TA 70 series tires. This S-22 has the “look” & vintage Muscle car sound … it gets a …“cool car” …“tight” and thumbs up wherever it goes!

This low mileage survivor is in amazing condition. It is a solid and rust free car that has lived its whole life locally, from purchase new in Seattle to dry eastern WA & Spokane areas. You can still see the factory pinch welds under the doors & fenders, the original dash looks like new without cracks or fading. This was a long term storage find that has just recently brought back to life. You can look photos, see its lines and see how straight and nice this car really is. This is one of the nicest condition survivor comets I have seen, let alone being a very rare S-22 Optioned Factory V8, 2 Dr-Hardtop!

Junkyard Gem: 1973 Mercury Montego MX Brougham Sawzall Convertible Edition

Fri, Apr 21 2017

You know how it goes— the weather is warm, you want to do some top-down driving, and you lack a proper convertible... but you do have a hooptie Detroit car on one side of the garage and a big ol' Sawzall on the other. Put the two together and you have a Sawzall Convertible, which generally lasts for about one summer before it gets scrapped. Here's a fine example of such a car, photographed in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service junkyard. Most Sawzall Convertibles (yes, it should be called a roadster, but nobody does that) have raw, ragged metal edges, or maybe duct tape over the stumps of the amputated pillars, but someone went to the trouble to weld nice smooth metal covers over the hackage on this one. The windshield is gone. Instead, the windshield frame is ringed by tongue depressors held in place by gooey roofing tar. No, we don't know why. The Montego MX Brougham was a hot-selling personal luxury coupe in its day, selling for $3,041 in 1973. That's just under $17,000 in 2017 dollars. It must have been fun, cruising this thing on Bay Area streets with no roof and a rattle-can spray-bomb job. This one has the optional 400-cubic-inch V8 engine, rated at 171 horsepower. What would this car's original buyer have thought of its fate? This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. Watch as an out-of-control car demolishes gas pump

Tue, May 2 2017

A Baltimore area man was fighting for his life Tuesday after crashing his car into a gas station. According to WBAL, the unidentified 64-year-old lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons around 4:55 a.m. May 1 in Parkville, Md. The 2007 Mercury Milan careened downhill, ramped over a curb, and smashed full-speed into a gas station pump. The car then flipped and came to rest against one of the station's canopy support pillars. Don Karbowniczek, owner of a service station across the street, told WBAL he was shocked there wasn't more damage. It's also surprising that the car even made it to the pumps, as it had to thread past a coin-op vacuum machine, the station's sign, a utility pole, and a traffic light pole. "It came right through, took some of our bushes out, just trimmed them for us, and how it got through and flip the way it did, I don't know. From what I see on the marks, it had to go airborne and just come down on the pump," Karbowniczek said. Thankfully there was no fire or explosion. Gas pumps have shear valves - safety devices that immediately cut the flow of gasoline when a pump is damaged. The driver was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, and was in critical condition. Police theorized the driver may have become stricken with a health issue when he lost control. This Mercury Cougar Eliminator is a lovely '69 survivor

Sun, Jul 31 2016

If you have an overachieving brother/sister/cousin/friend (or whoever), you might know this feeling well; it can be tough to live up to those standards. In many ways, that notion can also describe the Mercury Cougar and its pioneering Ford Mustang sibling. Quite the act to follow, no? Happily though, the Cougar proved to be different enough from its Mustang relative to make a big splash, and perhaps no more so than in its racy "Eliminator" trim, new for 1969. This is one such heady Mercury, dressed in sporty Competition Orange paint, and claimed to be an unrestored "survivor." Need it in your life? The '69 Mercury Cougar Eliminator recently popped up on eBay in Chepachet, Rhode Island . The genesis of the Mercury Cougar began in 1967, really with one singular purpose—to bridge the gap between the Ford Mustang and the Ford Thunderbird with a more upscale, stylish, and chiefly more "European" feeling pony car. It's safe to say the Cougar fit the bill. Using the Mustang chassis as a base, the early Cougars were about three inches longer than their 'Stang cousins and offered better legroom, sleek front and rear fascias, and a more luxe interior. Don't mistake "upscale" for "soft" however; come 1969 the Eliminator package gave the Cougar a seriously mean attitude. Spec-up the interior package and you received high-back bucket seats, a Rallye clock, wood-rimmed steering wheel, and padded interior moldings among other custom trims. Outside is where the Eliminator really struts its stuff, though. Eliminators came equipped with a blacked-out grille, special steel wheels, an aggressive front splitter and rear wing, plus racy decals and side stripes. Four color choices were available — Competition Orange, Bright Blue Metallic, White, and Bright Yellow. As standard, the '69 Mercury Cougar Eliminator came equipped with a 351 cubic inch V8, boasting 290 horsepower, as seen in the case of this car. More powerful options were also available, as noted by Barnfinds, which included a big 390 cubic inch V8 (320 hp), a high-revving Boss 302 V8, and the gargantuan 428 Cobra Jet V8. Peek beneath the body of this Cougar and the 351ci V8 is hooked up to a desirable close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, showing a claimed 35,243 miles. Though the mileage isn't verified, the car's overall condition and wear would suggest the readings to be true. Befitting those low miles, this unrestored Cougar does carry quite the high price — a tall $32,000.
