Officially regarded as the fastest of the R107 SLs the 500SL packed a 5.0-liter V8 with big horsepower and torque and a notable lack of emissions gear that strangled everything else of the era. This 1983 example sports the highly desirable Euro headlights and bumpers creating what might very well be the most sought-after R107 of all. While most American SLs struggled with an anemic 3.8 liter engine the rest of the world was treated to the mighty 500SL and now that they've become collectors' items finding one is a real challenge. This is a highly original and beautifully preserved original car finished in Gray which gives it a very no-nonsense look. Fit and finish are legendary and while there are rumors that Mercedes added extra weight to the doors to give them that characteristic feel the truth is that these cars were simply grossly over-engineered. Tight gaps perfect panel alignment and paint that definitely showed off a massive price tag were all standard equipment. And thanks to the Euro bumpers and headlights this one has a very distinctive look here in the US that will definitely stand out from the more clumsy-looking domestic models. Looks cool doesn't it? Inside it's the same comfortable spacious and well-planned interior that was standard on all SLs. MB-Tex vinyl on the seats means that they'll look great practically forever and thanks to great care and a lifetime out of the sun everything remains in great shape. That's real wood on the center console and dash and the gauges offer a no-nonsense way to keep an eye on the engine. Everything was standard equipment in 1983 including automatic climate control power windows and locks. All SLs included two tops with this one wearing a black canvas convertible top as well as a matching hardtop. With more than $4000+ in recent service (receipts included) this SL is definitely ready to rock. A 4-speed automatic transmission was standard equipment giving it impressive acceleration yet a lazy relaxed feeling on the highway which enables it to swallow hundreds of miles of pavement at a stretch. The suspension offers the ideal mixture of comfort and handling nicely.

Accessories included: two euro license places for front, original gas cap, extra fuses, and extra interior lights.

If you're looking for a clean SL this is a good one. But if you're looking for a rare fast well maintained 500SL this is a GREAT one!

Minor imperfections: some rust in trunk, minor scratches in paint, crack in front bumper (no damage to anything behind it).

The best Super Bowl car commercials from the last 5 years

Wed, Jan 28 2015

If you've been dipping into the Autoblog feed over the past days and weeks, you wouldn't even have to be a sports fan to know the Super Bowl is coming up. Automakers have been teasing their spots for the big game, dropping them days early, fully-formed onto the Internet and otherwise trying to amp up the multi-million-dollar outlays that they've made for air time on the biggest advertising day of the year. And, we're into it. The lead up to the Super Bowl is almost akin to a mini auto show around these parts; with automakers being amongst the most prolific advertisers on these special Sundays. The crop of ads from 2015 looks as strong as ever, but we thought we'd take a quick look back at some of our favorite spots from the last five years. Take a look at our picks – created from a very informal polling of Autoblog editors and presented in no particular order – and then tell us about your recent faves, in Comments. Chrysler, Imported From Detroit Chrysler, Eminem and a lingering pan shot of "The Fist" – it doesn't get much more Motown than 2011's Imported From Detroit. With the weight of our staffers hailing from in and around The D, it's no wonder that our memories still favor this epic Super Bowl commercial (even though the car it was shilling was crap). Imported really set the tone for later Chrysler ads, too, repeated the formula: celebrity endorsement + dramatic copy + dash of jingoism = pulled car-guy heartstrings. Mercedes-Benz, Soul teaser with Kate Upton One of our favorite Super Bowl commercials (and yours, based on the insane number of views you logged) didn't even technically air during the game. Mercedes-Benz teased its eventual spot Soul with 90-seconds worth of Kate Upton threatening to do her best Joy Harmon impression. (Teaser indeed.) It doesn't win points for cleverness, use of music, acting, or any compelling carness, but it proved that Mercedes' advertisers knew how to make a splash in the Internet Age. And, hey, it's still classier than every GoDaddy commercial. Kia, A Dream Car. For Real Life Like the Mercedes video above, the initial draw here is a pretty lady; in this case the always stunning Adriana Lima. But this Kia commercial really delivers the extra effort we expect while scarfing crabby snacks and homemades, too. First of all, Motley Crue. Second, a cowboy on a bucking rhino. Enjoy yet again.

Brabus 800 Roadster is a power-mad aristocrat

Wed, 06 Mar 2013

If we're being completely honest, we haven't exactly been in love with the aesthetics of the sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. It's mostly a front-end issue, with its glowering eagle-eye headlamps and upright, dinner-plate-sized Three-Pointed Star coming across to us as overwrought. That's particularly troublesome for a roadster whose history has of the most elegant designs of all time in its back catalog. Somehow, the new R231 generation's brash visuals seem more at home on this Brabus 800 Roadster to us.
That's probably because the high-dollar German tuner has turned up the wick on the SL's visuals even further, with carbon fiber bodywork, a more aggressive aero kit, matte hood scoop and complex two-finish wheels. It's all-the-way committed to its brashness, in other words - and justifiably so. Anything with 800 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque has earned the right to look however it wants, right?
Brabus started with the SL65 and its not-exactly-underpowered 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12, and went to town, fitting their own turbocharger and intercooler system, along with a less-restrictive exhaust system with driver-selectable sound levels and new engine electronics. The result is a 3.7-second 0-62 mph time, an electronically limited top whack of 217 mph... and one seriously compromised toupée.

How could a lifted Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG be more awesome? Add an axle

Fri, 01 Mar 2013

We are fully confident in saying that this will be the most amazing thing you see all day. First of all, it's a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen - in AMG spec, no less. And it's being shown off in high-definition video glory, blasting through the desert, jumping over sand dunes, and generally being awesome. But here's the kicker: It has six wheels. Three axles. And they're all driven. Holy $%!#.
Under the hood is AMG's usual 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8, and total output is rated at 536 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. That's impressive and all, but do keep in mind that the G63 6x6 weighs in at 8,322 pounds or, you know, the weight of two E-Class sedans. Combine that with its 18 inches of ground clearance, 37-inch tires and five locking differentials and you've got a vehicle capable of, well, everything you've ever imagined or will ever imagine for the rest of your life.
But the goodness doesn't stop once you open the doors. Oh, no. This thing is fit for a king - or a sheik, more appropriately - with ultimately luxurious seating for four. The rear bench seat has been removed in favor of two bucket seats with a fixed console in the middle, and the rear seats have been moved back beyond the usual B pillar to allow for more legroom.
