This is one very special 560sl in a most desirable color combination of white and palomino. With the photographs I have tried to show a cross section of the car so that one may appreciate it's impeccable condition. I know this car is not for everyone. Some may not want to spend this much money, others may want to find lesser examples and hope to restore. What you see here is a car which needs nothing! It has been completely sorted and brought to the condition as it was when it left the assembly line!  Further, this SL comes with a complete service history; a notebook which begins with the original window sticker, the buyer's purchase order, and the buyer's handwritten notes as to how to care for his new car!  Very special!

The original owner was meticulous. The service records document oil changes at every 5000 mile interval, as well as the 15K service and the 30k service, and now the more recent 50K service! The stack of records is several inches thick, and is in a leather portfolio (see photos).  The car also comes with all of the original manuals and service booklet and the original silver service plate. The body has absolutely no rust  and no evidence of any body work.

I recently did the 50K service. My mechanic - a German, certified Mercedes Benz mechanic, and one who knows these car like the back of his hand (having worked on them for 30 + years) - was instructed to take care of 'anything and everything' showing wear and tear after 50K miles and 27 years! Hence, we replaced all 4 shock absorbers, brake rotors and brake pads, fuel injectors, hoses, tie rods, spindles, mounts, bushings, oxygen sensor, ball joints, etc. In addition, since the original top was at the end of it's life we put a new top on it and redid the leather seats (despite the old ones showing only minor wear ). Finally, 4 new Michelin tires were also added along with balancing and alignment. At the end of the day, the person purchasing this car literally will need to do nothing to start enjoying this car.

So, some of the highlights, again:

Complete service records;
Absolutely rust free;
No body work;
Original books;
Accurate and documented mileage;
Original paint.
2 tops;
Records documenting oil services every 5000 miles!

For one who knows what he is looking for, this is one of the nicest 560sl's around, needing no cosmetic nor mechanical work. It drives and handles as it did when it first left the factory.

This was an original California car which came to Florida 1.5 years ago. Gently driven, it has always been garage kept, as the lustrous paint and wood would bear out.

Please take a look at the detailed pictures to get a sense of the true condition of this car!

(Please also note: There is a Sony CD/tuner with blue tooth installed, but, a Becker Mexico unit is included with sale. There is a company in N.J. which will recondition old Becker's and switch them out for a very reasonable sum if one chooses to reinstall the OEM radio. I preferred to have blue tooth capability with my iPhone so have opted to keep the Sony unit at present. Also, the right passenger mirror motor not working in vertical direction and I am currently looking for a replacement mirror).

My asking price reflects the rarity and condition of this particular 560sl. There are many less expensive 560sl's around, many nice 560sl's around, and many rough 560sl's for less money. No matter how wonderful their descriptions, almost all will need mechanical work. And if you "know" the 560sl, while parts are readily available, they are starting to become more rare and it can be a process.  NOT THIS ONE!  Finally, I would add that he market for the 560sl series is on the upswing. This 560sl can be driven as frequently as you'd like or should wish to put it in a 'time capsule' it is hard to imagine that this one - particularly with it's pedigree history and complete service records - will not substantially increase in value with time. If you are investing, this is the one to own.

You will have to look long and hard to find a more pristine, more sorted, and better documented example. If  this is the type of 560 SL you are looking for - the "needle in the haystack" - please feel free to contact me. I would emphasize, this car is not for everyone. It is not for one looking for a bargain or to haggle; rather, it is for one who wishes to enjoy and appreciate the glory of the 560sl as it was when it came to market in 1987. One who knows value. One who can appreciate the classic period this car was part of.  Not many 560sl's can lay claim to so faithfully representing this era of Mercedes Benz. This one does.

Race Recap: 2015 US Grand Prix was wet, wild, and historic

Mon, Oct 26 2015

Hurricane Patricia made landfall in Mexico this weekend, and made her presence known throughout the South. For two of the three days of the grand prix weekend it rained non-stop in Austin, so badly on Saturday that qualifying had to be postponed until Sunday morning, and then it only stayed dry enough to conduct the first two sessions. At the end of a tricky, slippery Q2 Nico Rosberg had put his Mercedes-AMG Petronas on the front row, one tenth ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton. The German had done the best he could to keep his hair-thin chances of a World Championship fight alive. Daniel Ricciardo lined his Infiniti Red Bull Racing chassis in third ahead of teammate Daniil Kvyat, both drivers having moved up a place because Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel took a ten-spot grid penalty for using a fifth engine and dropped to 13th. Continuing the two-up theme, Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg were fifth and sixth for Force India. After that came variety: Felipe Massa in seventh for Williams, Max Verstappen for Toro Rosso in eighth, Fernando Alonso looking good in the rain for McLaren in ninth, and Romain Grosjean for Lotus in tenth. When the lights went out, Turn 1 set the tone. Pole position is on the outside line at Circuit of the Americas, and Hamilton had got himself far enough under Rosberg by the time the two got up the hill that Rosberg had to stick to the outside through the corner. At the corner exit Hamilton used the entire track, pushing Rosberg wide, their cars touching. As Rosberg left the track and dropped back to fourth, Hamilton radioed to the team to say the contact was unintentional. The two Mercedes' and two Red Bulls animated the front. Rosberg passed Ricciardo at the end of a Virtual Safety Car period employed to let the marshals clean the debris at Turn 1. Kvyat started chasing down Hamilton until the Russian ran wide and let Rosberg and Ricciardo through, then Rosberg ran wide on the next lap to let Ricciardo through. On Lap 15, Ricciardo passed Hamilton through the esses to take the lead. After the first round of pit stops the Aussie still had the lead, followed by Rosberg, Kvyat, Hamilton, and Vettel. Then Rosberg got around to take the lead and Vettel closed in on Hamilton as the Brit duked it out with the Russian. Rosberg showed excellent speed, building up a nine-second gap on Ricciardo, but a Safety Car period erased that when Marcus Ericsson had to park his dead Sauber on the inside of the track after Turn 10.

New Mercedes E-Class nearly exposed, may be Maybach

Mon, Sep 14 2015

The all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is marching closer and closer to production, with a new round of spy photos giving us our best look yet at the S-Class-inspired looks of the German brand's executive luxury car. There really is very little camouflage this time around – what's there looks more like the kind of plastic wrapping you'd see on a freshly imported vehicle at the port. In front, we can see the new E will wear similar LED accents to the S- and C-Class. The E-Class' big and little brothers also inspired the tail of the new model, where we can see slightly disguised, vertically oriented LED taillights. Prominent, enclosed exhausts are very similar to what we saw in our spy shots of the Mercedes-Maybach E-Class. Aside from the exhausts, this particular car also wears the same blingy wheels as the range-topping tester we spied last August. The thick-rimmed, multi-spoke design isn't the only giveaway to this car's luxurious intentions, though. Our last Maybach sighting showed a car completely covered in camo, making it difficult to tell just how large the rear doors are relative to the car we're seeing today. Instead of the doors, though, we suggest you look at the windows. Like the August spy photos, this prototype features tinted rear glass, which could perhaps indicate that we're looking at yet another example the second Mercedes-Maybach model. So is this yet another Maybach E-Class? We're leaning towards yes. The size of the back doors – and the rear quarter window, in particular – is close enough to what we saw last month, and the presence of tinted glass, the same exhausts, and the same wheels can't be discounted either.

Recharge Wrap-Up: No new Smart Roadster, Africa to UK on one tank, Duke's efficient axial engine [w/videos]

Sat, Jul 19 2014

Smart will not make another generation of the Roadster, but a Smart SUV might be in the cards. According to Smart's CEO, Annette Winkler, "The Roadster isn't a profitable business case. Everybody is keen on the car, but nobody wants to pay the bill." What Car? states that Smart is likely planning a baby SUV to take on the Nissan Juke and its ilk. But for the immediate future, Winkler says Smart "must focus on how we can maximize potential of the Fortwo and Forfour. That is strategy number one." Read more over at What Car?. A Mercedes-Benz E300 Bluetec Hybrid made the 1,223-mile trek from Africa to the UK on just one tank of fuel. Driven by Andrew Frankel of Autocar, the diesel hybrid left Tangier, Morocco with a full tank of gas (using the optional 80-liter fuel tank), and arrived in Goodwood with the car indicating 100 miles of range left. Frankel and his co-driver averaged 61.2 miles per gallon (73.6 mpg UK) on the intercontinental journey through four countries, despite elevation changes and a traffic jam. See the first video below for more information, or check out the article at Carscoops. Duke Engines promises simplicity and efficiency from the axial engine it's developing. Rather than lining up the cylinders, this engine arranges them in a circle, which allows Duke to avoid unnecessary weight. The five-cylinder, four-stroke motor manages the same amount of powerstrokes per revolution as a standard six-cylinder mill, but weighs 30 percent less. It also has much fewer parts, says Duke. Its high compression ratios mean more power with less fuel, which adds up to more efficiency and fewer emissions. The second of the two videos below, which we first found over at Sploid, explains Duke's axial engine. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences.
