The Mercedes G-Class gets the full Maybach treatment before the curtain finally closes

Like the hotdog and soda combo at Costco or the official website for the 1996 movie Space Jam, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has soldiered on nearly unaltered since its birth. Sure, there have been variants like the wonderfully over-the-top G63 6x6, but the G-Wagen is essentially the same squared-off SUV with rifle-bolt locks and doors with enough mass to support a minor gravity field. Spy shots show a replacement is finally on the horizon, but based on the leaked YouTube video above and Instagram post below, it looks like the current model is going to get the full Mercedes-Maybach Landaulet treatment before the curtain finally closes. While there has been no official word from the automaker, all signs point to a genuine Mercedes-Maybach product. The vehicle is badged as a G650, which falls in line with other current V12-powered Mercedes-Maybach products. The Maybach name and badge are found in all the expected places. The license closely matches other Mercedes German-manufacturer plates. The carbon fiber fender flares and portal axles look like they were taken from the G550 4x42. That means high-quality leather surfaces throughout and an increased focus on rear seat comfort and convenience. If this is indeed a G650, it's packing a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 under the hood that churns out 630 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes celebrates with World Championship edition SL63

Mercedes has plenty to be celebrating at the moment, having just won the Formula One World Championship in spectacular style – taking the constructors' title by a huge margin and the top two slots in the drivers' standings as well. It almost goes without saying that the German outfit would celebrate with a special edition, and that's just what we're looking at here. Presented at a special celebratory Stars & Cars event in Stuttgart in front of 50,000 jubilant fans, the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG World Championship 2014 Collector's Edition is based on Benz's twin-turbo V8-powered roadster but with some choice upgrades. Two versions will be offered: one in black with gold accents (displayed with the Silverstone circuit layout), the other in white with silver accents (and the Hockenheim map). One was designed by Lewis Hamilton, the other by Nico Rosberg. We'll let you sort out which one was done by which, but either way there'll only be 19 examples, each dedicated to a different grand prix circuit in the championship which Mercedes positively dominated – winning all but three, scoring eleven one-two finishes and landing on the podium at each and every one.

Mercedes-AMG planning hybrid hypercar?

It used to be that, a few overlapping two-door models aside, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche didn't really compete with one another. That's how the two ended up collaborating on projects like the Mercedes 500 E that put it on the performance sedan map without fear of stepping on each other's toes. But Porsche has grown considerably since then, challenging its Stuttgart neighbor with four-door sedans and crossovers, as well as sports coupes and convertibles. Little wonder, then, that Mercedes has hit back at Porsche with the AMG GT, and there will be many more versions to follow in 911 style. But that may not be the final salvo the Silver Star marque launches at Zuffenhausen. According to the latest bit of speculation and deduction from our friends at Motor Trend, Mercedes-AMG may be planning a hybrid hypercar of its own to take on the Porsche 918 Spyder – not to mention the McLaren P1 and LaFerrari. Solid information is sparse at this point, but after speaking to AMG chief Tobias Moers, MT speculates that the new flagship will likely be mid-engined, with a boosted version of the company's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 kicking out between 650 and 700 horsepower, working with a pair of electric motors at the front to deliver tenacious through-the-road all-wheel traction and a combined output in the thousand-horsepower range. There is the possibility, though, that Mercedes could go after the latest hybrid hypercars with a flagship version of its just-launched AMG GT, packing a similar powertrain setup as the ultimate evolution of the breed. Other GT versions will likely soon include a GT3 racing model, a Black Series version and a roadster – following a similar path taken not only by the 911, but also by Benz's previous halo supercars like the SLR McLaren and SLS AMG.
