1973 Mercedes Benz SL 450 Convertible
4.5L V8 Engine , 3 speed Auto Transmission, 106,000 Miles.

Up for auction is a 1973 Mercedes SL 450 Convertible.  It starts right up.  Runs and drives good.  Has a new battery.  Its not perfect, but a great classic car to drive around and enjoy.  Has both tops.

The Engine...runs good.  Sounds good.  It does have a slight valve tap at start up on the driver side head, or its a slight exhaust leak on the header, which can make a similar sound,  I can't tell which, not bad though.  It doesn't smoke or burn fluids.  It runs a little rich sometimes but nothing major. Otherwise it starts right up 2nd or 3rd crank and goes.  Has K&N filter.  But everything in the engine compartment is all there and in working order, except a/c, needs a new hose and a/c belt.

The Transmission...shifts fine, no issues.  It's a 3 speed trans.

The Drivetrain...is great.  Rides like a Mercedes.  No shimmies, or shakes.  Rides down the expressway 80 mph no issues, no strange noises or problems.  Brakes are good, tires are good.

The Interior...is nice.  Everything is there.  Seats have been recovered.  Has new Mercedes floor mats.  Has a new plastic dash cover on the dash.  But overall as you can see in the pics it looks nice.  Everything works except a/c, the power windows, heat, blower, lights, switches, etc....all works.  The carpet is original and faded, but all there.  All the mechanics for the the soft top work, all the seals are there.  The soft top is in good shape, except one of the 2 side plastic windows has a slit in it.

The Exterior...is nice.  It has been repainted, in my opinion it looks nice, it gets compliments every time I drive it.  However, the clear coat was never buffed out in my opinion, can't say for sure, but it looks like it was just sprayed, but it was painted 8 years ago, it has that new clear coat look, if you've ever seen a car repainted before they wet sand it, or compound wax it to finish it, that's what it looks like to me, I bought it this way in 2005 from a guy that had 10 Mercedes classics in his warehouse.  It has quite a few dings on the body.  Very little rust underneath, very minimal.  I know for a fact that it has been kept in a garage for the past 11 years, and not driven in the rain or snow.  But overall for a 40 year old car, it looks good!!  It's not a show car, but it's a good looking driver.  Or if nothing else, dependable transportation if you want.

As US exports top 2 million, is America becoming the world's source of cheap cars?

Mon, Feb 9 2015

North American auto production is booming with 2014 figures just shy of the of the 17.3-million vehicle record set in 2000. With more models being built on the continent, even more are being shipped overseas. Factories in the US exported 2.1 million cars last year – the highest number ever. About half of those went to Canada and Mexico, but more than ever have been heading to places like the Middle East and China. The upswing comes in part from from after-effects from the Great Recession, according to The Wall Street Journal. With a weak dollar and lower production costs after the financial crisis, building vehicles in the US was relatively cheaper and more competitive in the world. At the same time buyers around the world are going crazy for crossovers. According to the WSJ, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are already exporting the majority of their US production of these models overseas. Both automakers have also announced investments to expand production further here to send more vehicles abroad. Even Honda has been shipping more models out of the country than it imported here. There is a concern this international strength could start slowing because the dollar is strengthening against other currencies, though it's too early to know what the actual effect of this could be, according to the WSJ. "Of course, we closely watch currency exchange, but we don't make changes in production or allocation based on temporary fluctuations in the exchange rate," Ford North American boss Joe Hinrichs told the newspaper. Why we can't have better headlights here in the U.S.

Tue, Mar 13 2018

It wouldn't be a European auto show if we weren't teased with at least one mainstream vehicle we can't have here. At the Geneva Motor Show last week, the small but vocal contingent of shooting-brake buffs lamented that the Mazda6 wagon won't be coming to our shores, although they can take comfort in the fact that the vehicle won't get the torquey 250-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine we'll get here. Mercedes-Benz also announced a new headlight technology in Geneva that likely won't be available here anytime soon. It's just the latest in a long line of innovative and potentially lifesaving front-lighting solutions that the federal government doesn't allow in this country due to outdated standards — and a current lack of leadership at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Mercedes-Benz's new Digital Light system that debuted in Geneva uses a computer chip to activate more than a million micro-reflectors to better illuminate the road ahead. The Digital Light headlamps works with the vehicle's cameras, sensors and navigation mapping to adjust lighting for the given location and situation and to detect other road users. The Digital Light technology also serves as an extended head-up display of sorts by projecting symbols on the pavement ahead to alert drivers to, say, slippery conditions or pedestrians in the road. And it can even project lines on the road in a construction zone or through tight curves to show the driver the correct path. Digital Light will be available on Mercedes-Maybach vehicles later this year, although like any technology it's bound to trickle down to less expensive vehicles. That is, if we ever get it here in the U.S. Audi, a leader in automotive lighting, has repeatedly run into snags trying to bring state-of-the-art car headlights to the U.S. The German luxury automaker's recently introduced matrix laser headlight system, which performs many of the same trick as Mercedes-Benz's Digital Light, also isn't legal on U.S. roads. And five years after the introduction of its matrix-beam LED lighting, which illuminates more of the road without blinding oncoming motorists with brights by simultaneously operating high and low beams, Audi still can't bring that technology to the U.S. either.

Carlsson turns Mercedes-Benz SLK into 610-HP hill-climb clawer

Mon, 28 Jan 2013

Carlsson's race-tuned versions of the Mercedes-Benz SLK have been taking checkered flags for years, and we won't be surprised if its SLK 340 hill climber fares any different. Developed by multiple German and Swiss hill climb champion Reto Meisel, the carbon-bodied SLK 340 with lightweight brakes and a closed underbody weighs 1,716 pounds. Propelling that tiny bit of weight is a 3.4-liter V8 from Judd with 610 horsepower, and it rolls on 18-inch wheels shod in Avon tires.
It will debut at the Geneva Motor Show before beginning its racing campaigns in the summer. This one won't just tear up roads in Europe, though - Meisel says he plans on bringing it to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The press release below has more details.
