1968 Mercedes Benz 280sl Pagoda-gorgeous, Mechanically Strong, Desirable 4-speed on 2040-cars
Santa Barbara, California, United States
Please Note: This car was won by an eBay bidder who was ultimately unable to secure the necessary financing to purchase the car. Please make sure that you have performed all the necessary due diligence before bidding, including making sure you have the available funds and or financing. The alternative is unfair to us and to the other parties interested in the car. Thank you. Offered for sale is an absolutely gorgeous, mechanically strong and honest 1968 Mercedes Benz 280SL finished in rare, desirable and factory-correct Blue Green (DB 268, Blau Grun) over a cognac leather interior. Sporting the sought-after 4 speed manual gearbox, this well maintained example is turn-key mechanically and an absolute joy on the road. Retaining the tell tale headlamp notches, factory spot welds on the fenders and a solid, rust-free undercarriage, this car checks all the important boxes for discerning W113 SL buyers. Blue Green is a hard to find factory color, wonderfully era specific and truly striking on the Pagoda body. This car's finish is beautiful, deep, lustrous, consistent and marred only by the most negligible of imperfections, none of which are significant enough to appear in any of the pictures. The body is excellent; straight, free of rust or bondo and retaining correct and consistent panel fits and gaps throughout. The chrome is in great shape, as is the glass and rubber, and the color matched, hubcapped wheels are wrapped in tires with plenty of remaining tread. The car's tan interior is equally as clean, offsetting the Blue Green finish beautifully. The leather seats and correct square weave carpets are in great shape, free of any significant wear or damage and showing only limited patina. The dash is free of cracks, housing an original Becker radio and fully functional gauges and appointed with beautifully refinished wood trim. The car is in excellent mechanical condition, the original, numbers matching engine firing up easily, idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the manual transmission's gears. It's worth noting for those unfamiliar with Mercedes W113 Sls that factory manual gearboxes are extremely desirable due to the way that they're geared compared to the automatic transmission models, which were produced in a much higher volume. The automatic cars are somewhat sluggish, with high RPMs at highway speeds. Conversely, manual gearbox cars are agile and punchy are feel much less beleaguered when bombing down the freeway. The car's ride quality is excellent, the suspension tight and brakes strong and true, ensuring that the car is pleasure from behind the wheel, whether tooling through town, winding through the canyons or cruising at 75 mph. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a quickly appreciating Mercedes 280SL with all the right things going for it: cosmetically gorgeous, rare color combination, solid body, undercarriage and fenders, strong matching numbers engine and desirable manual gearbox. Whether for the seasoned collector or weekend enthusiast, this car deserves the serious consideration of anyone in the Pagoda market. Mercedes Alabama ops ordered to allow workers to discuss unionization
Wed, Dec 3 2014A decision last week by the National Labor Relations Board has bolstered the efforts of the United Auto Workers at Mercedes-Benz's Tuscaloosa, AL factory, as the union continues its attempts to represent the factory's workers. According to Reuters, the NLRB ruled that Mercedes-Benz US International, the proper name of the company behind the Tuscaloosa factory, can no longer prevent workers from discussing unionization in work areas while off the clock. While MBUSI maintains that it's not taking a side on unionization and that it wants the "the decision left to our team members," the UAW is still arguing that the US facility should take the same position on unions that the rest the world's Mercedes-Benz plants take and. Speaking to Reuters, the UAW says that stance "acknowledges the human right to form trade unions" and "respects the right of collective bargaining." According to Reuters, the Alabama factory employs 3,500 workers – 2,500 full time and 1,000 "temporary" – and is the only Daimler-owned factory on the planet not to offer employees the opportunity for representation. Presently, the Tuscaloosa facility assembles Mercedes' C-Class, GL-Class and M-Class vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz USA considering moving south
Wed, Dec 17 2014Mercedes-Benz may be a German automaker first and foremost, but it's a global operation. Among its many offices around the world, the company employs some 800 staffers at its US headquarters in New Jersey. But that office could be moving down South in the near future. According to reports in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the Wall Street Journal and Automotive News, Mercedes is looking into relocating its American head office from Montvale, NJ, where it's been based since 1972, to one of several locations under consideration below the Mason-Dixon line. Among the front-runners is Atlanta, where Porsche bases its North American operations. The presence of a trained workforce, necessary infrastructure, compliant officials and proximity to a major hub for international air traffic could make the Georgian metropolis an attractive proposition for Mercedes. Several locations in North Carolina are also said to be under consideration, as well. Either way, MBUSA's relocation to the South would put it closer to its assembly plant in Tuscaloosa, AL, and to the Port of Brunswick near Savannah from which it ships out those vehicles made in Alabama to points overseas. The relocation project is reportedly being handled by commercial real-estate firm JLL Inc, which is helping Toyota handle its relocation from southern California and Ohio to Texas. Sources don't expect, however, for New Jersey to let Mercedes go without a fight. The state's Grow NJ Assistance Program could offer MBUSA an attractive incentives package to stay in Montvale. The company previously planned in 1998 to relocate to Pearl River, NY, but ultimately ended up staying in Jersey. 2016 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix recap: another wild show on and off track
Mon, Apr 18 2016Normally we use this space to provide a lengthy recap of the weekend's Formula 1 race, but we're going to try something different since most folks reading this know what happened at the Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday. Instead, we'll alight on what we saw as the big issues in and around the race. Let us know what you think in Comments. Proper qualifying is back. Thank goodness. It only took a month of embarrassment to fix it. And so is passing! For the third race in a row, big performance improvements at the ten teams behind Mercedes-AMG Petronas and a wider tire selection at this race graced us with opening stints filled with dicing cars. Seeing the McLarens on screen doesn't make us cringe. Manor doesn't only make the global feed when it's being lapped. We've been complaining about parade races for so long that we forgot excitement was possible without rain or wholesale regulation changes. Yes, Mercedes is still the king of the jungle, but there are some other proper midfield beasts on the hunt, too. Malfunctions up and down the grid did help the show in Shanghai, like Lewis Hamilton suffering perpetual troubles, Nico Hulkenberg's runaway front wheel which red-flagged Q2, and Sebastian Vettel's and Kimi Raikkonen's flubbed hot laps in Q3 that let Daniel Ricciardo slip by into second on the grid. Come race day things went all Grand Theft Auto at Turn 1 on the opening lap, sending some of the best cars to the pits. Then came Ricciardo's puncture while leading, then came the Safety Car – all by Lap 5. Nico Rosberg got 38 seconds of airtime on the way to victory – at the start and the finish, and that happened to be his margin of victory, too – otherwise he was a ghost. Everyone else was struggling and juggling. Rosberg's win at the Bahrain Grand Prix put the German at five consecutive victories going back to last year's Mexican Grand Prix. The history books show that any driver who's won five straight contests has gone on to win the championship. With his triumph in China, the German has won the season's first three races, the history books again show that the other nine drivers who've pulled that off have gone on to win the championship. Rosberg, 36 points ahead of his teammate in the standings, is having none of it. He said of the other victors, "But they didn't have Lewis Hamilton as their team-mate." Perhaps Mercedes was right not to make an engine deal with Red Bull last season.
