1968 Mercedes Benz 250sl - Very Original, Rust-free, Documented California W113 on 2040-cars
Santa Barbara, California, United States
Offered for sale is a beautiful 1968 Mercedes 250SL finished in beautiful Horizon Blue (DB 304) and retaining its original, rust-free undercarriage, original, rust-free body (including factory spot-welded fenders), original, numbers matching engine and transmission and original stamped service booklet and owners manual. A local car from new, it was ordered by Mrs. R. Whitmarsh of Montecito, CA, and delivered by Butts Motors, the Mercedes distributor here in Santa Barbara at the time. The car was driven by its first owner until 1974, at which point she gifted it to her daughter and son-in-law, prompting a relocation to La Jolla, CA. The second owners used the car primarily as a weekend driver, keeping it until 1990, at which point it was sold to an acquaintance in Colorado. The third owner furthered the careful stewardship of the prior owners, using it sparingly, always keeping it garaged and properly maintained and never subjecting it to any weather or elements. Consequently, the car remains extremely original, with a strong, numbers matching engine, smooth transmission, charmingly patinated aesthetic condition, and (I can't stress this enough) the car retains its completely original, rust-free undercarriage and completely original, rust and bondo free body, including the original fenders which still have their telltale spot welds in the engine compartment. The
exterior is in great shape, the factory correct Horizon Blue finish marred only by minor
imperfections accrued over the years, none of which are significant enough to appear
in any of the pictures or detract from the car’s considerable appeal. The body is
straight and free of any accident damage and it retains even, factory correct panel
fits and gaps throughout. All of the chrome, glass and rubber are in good original
condition, and the original color-matched, hub-capped wheels have their chrome
beauty rings and are wrapped in tires with plenty of remaining tread. The car
comes with both its hard and soft tops, the hard-top completely original and hardly ever used and the soft top showing minimal wear with a
replaced clear rear window. The car’s original Medium Blue MB-Tex
interior is equally as clean, the seats, interior panels and carpets showing
only minimal wear considering their 46 years of service. The car retains its original Becker radio,
dealer installed Kuhlmeister Air Conditioning system, as well as its rare,
optional “kinder seat”. The
car’s odometer shows 01,773 and everything – including the original stamped
service booklet – indicates that the car has travelled only 101k miles from
new. This is bolstered by the car’s excellent mechanical state, the original
engine starting without any hesitation, idling consistently and pulling
strongly and smoothly through all of the gears. Compression is excellent,
providing even and ample power, and the brakes and suspension all function
exactly as they should. The car’s a joy to drive, whether tooling through town with the top
down, winding through the back roads or cruising down the highway. The car’s
undercarriage is entirely original and rust-free – this car has never had any
accidents, rust or rust repair – it’s as clean and factory stock underneath as
you’ll find on a W113 Pagoda SL. The 250SL was an improvement to its 230SL predecessor and certainly the rarest of the Pagodas, making up less than 11% of the W113 production run. If you’re looking for an abundantly presentable, entirely solid and mechanically strong examples that is sure to appreciate and offer years of trustworthy and pleasurable service, this car deserves your serious consideration. It checks all the important boxes: gorgeous cosmetics with its original color combination, smooth running original engine and a rust-free original body and undercarriage. Please bid accordingly. We want this
car to go to great home and would be happy to further discuss it and answer any
questions, so please feel free to email us or call us at 805-202-4557.

Reed Motorcars We’ve always
had an appreciation for classic European cars and over the years have created
an eclectic personal collection. We only buy cars that we’d personally be
interested in owning and generally only sell them to make room for other
acquisitions. That time has come for this Mercedes (if the price is right, of
course – this isn’t a fire sale). We try to give accurate descriptions of the
cars we’re selling, but we’re enthusiasts, not experts, and we encourage and
are happy to help facilitate personal or professional inspections. But please
do so before bidding, as the alternative harms our ability to make sales to
other interested parties who have done their proper due diligence before
bidding. For U.S. buyers a
10% non-refundable deposit is required within 3 days of the auction’s end, the
balance to be paid within 7 days of the auction’s end. Foreign buyers must pay
in full within 7 business days of the auction’s end. Buyer is responsible for
shipping, however we’d be more that happy to help with recommendations and
arrangements. The car is listed locally and we reserve the right to end the
auction at any time should it sell prior to auction’s end. Thanks for your
interest. |

Top 10 small cars with the longest total driving range
Thu, Mar 19 2015Editor's Note: Since this article was originally posted in the spring of 2015, much has changed in the automotive landscape, especially among those shopping for small car economy. With thanks to Volkswagen for their blatant cheating – and subsequent cover-up – on diesel emissions, the largest player in the diesel passenger car segment isn't playing – they're paying; billions are going for both car buybacks and federally-imposed penalties. And for a few VW execs there exists the very real possibility of jail. With the absence of a big player and the abrupt entrance – via Chevy's new Bolt – of an affordable EV with 200+ miles of range, we've limited the diesel listings to Jaguar's new XE. And for those wanting an updated look at efficiency and range, Autoblog has it – or the EPA has it. Long before electric vehicles were part of the mainstream conversation, car lovers and skinflints alike would boast about the total range of their vehicles. There's something about getting farther down the road on one tank of gas that inflames the competitive spirit, almost as much as horsepower output or top speed. Of course, the vehicles with the very best range on today's market are almost all big trucks and SUVs; virtually all have the ability to carry massive reserves of fuel. Top up a standard Chevy Suburban and you can expect to travel almost 700 miles (you'll need to stop before the Suburban stops...), while a diesel-fed Jeep Grand Cherokee manages almost as many. But what about vehicles that are smaller? The EPA has, essentially, three classifications for 'small' vehicles: Minicompact, Subcompact and Compact. All three are measured based on interior volume, meaning that some cars with rather large exterior dimensions and engines slot in next to traditional small cars. But even though impressive GT coupes from Porsche, Bentley and Mercedes-Benz may have much larger gas tanks to feed their powerful engines, that capacity is offset by higher rates of consumption... in most cases. We used the EPA's Fuel Economy Guide for model year 2017 cars as a start, calculating the official highway miles per gallon rating with each vehicle's tank capacity. The resulting numbers aren't necessarily real world, but they do offer a spectrum for total theoretical range. The eventual top ten surprised me on a few occasions, and comprised quite a varied list of vehicles. 10.
YouTube's Super Bowl commercial buzz list dominated by automakers [w/videos]
Thu, 31 Jan 2013After Sunday's big game, YouTube will be the place to watch every commercial that you missed when you left your seat for an emergency guac refill or, as we say in Cleveland, took the Browns to the Super Bowl. That makes YouTube the nation's water cooler on Monday, and it's got some preliminary stats to share in the lead up to kickoff.
As you know, Super Bowl advertisers, particularly automakers, like to endlessly tease their big budget commercials in the weeks before the game, many times revealing them outright days in advance. Because of this, YouTube can tell us which commercials have been viewed the most so far, and their top five list is all automakers.
Kaley Cuoco appears to have been a good investment for Toyota, as her ad for the RAV4 has garnered the most YouTube views - six million and counting - among Super Bowl commercials so far. Second place goes to Mercedes-Benz, though not its actual Super Bowl commercial, but rather the teaser for it. You know, the one with Kate Upton and the car washing, which is up to 5.6 million views. Third place is Audi's Prom commercial (3.3M views), fourth goes to Volkswagen's slightly controversial Get In, Get Happy ad (3.3M views), and the fifth and final spot is bookended by the teaser video for Kaley Cuoco's commercial (3.2M views). You can watch all five in order below.
Cadillac, Daimler execs take swipes at Tesla
Tue, Apr 22 2014Despite the financial ties between Daimler and Tesla Motors, at least one Mercedes exec thinks the electric automaker doesn't have a bright future. And over at Cadillac, the message is that Tesla doesn't pose a threat but offers the luxury arm of General Motors more of classroom experience. The Mercedes story runs like this. Mercedes-Benz USA president and CEO, Steve Cannon, said at the New York Auto Show last week that Tesla has "no network" and only offers "little shops that don't have service capacity." He also said: "Folks are buying a Tesla now because they're kind of cool, but if you're a Tesla buyer, you have to have multiple cars. With Mercedes, you have a whole network. You've got no worries. ... Tesla is great, but you've got plenty of well-established brands that mean luxury, like Porsche or Mercedes-Benz, and how long do you think we're going to wait and let Tesla be out there alone [selling premium electric cars]?" "Treehuggers do not buy new luxury cars" – Uwe Ellinghaus For Cadillac's global chief marketing officer, Uwe Ellinghaus, Tesla's EV success represents little other than "a great opportunity and a learning exercise for all of us, and will help us traditional manufacturers to think twice about electric mobility." He added that, "I am not afraid of Tesla. ... There is no willingness to really sacrifice on the traditional qualities of a luxury car. These are not cars for treehuggers, as treehuggers do not buy new luxury cars." Ellinghaus made the comments during a panel discussion at the 2014 Automotive Forum. Perhaps the lesson of Tesla's offer of free Supercharging to Model S owners is what led to Cadillac to recently announce a deal with Chargepoint that gives ELR drivers access to that company's 16,500 charging stations. Read more details on that below. Cadillac and ChargePoint Bring EV Customer Luxury Driving Experience World's largest, most open electric vehicle charging network available to ELR drivers 2014-04-16 NEW YORK – Cadillac today announced a partnership with ChargePoint, the largest and most open electric vehicle-charging network in the world. The collaboration brings Cadillac ELR drivers immediate access to more than 16,500 charging locations on the ChargePoint network. The ELR electrified luxury coupe went on sale at the end of 2013. It embodies Cadillac's Art & Science design philosophy, combining provocative design with progressive technology.
