The base G500 has a 5.0L V8 that produces 292 horsepower and 336 ft-lbs of torque, which is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The standard bi-xenon headlights, also new, have dedicated high-pressure washers. Mercedes-Benz also includes heated power mirrors and rain-sensing wipers for adverse weather conditions.Inside, the power front seats have three-position memory and include pneumatic side bolsters. They are, of course, trimmed in leather. Mercedes-Benz COMAND system includes a 6.5-inch LCD screen and allows control of the stereo, navigation system, climate control system, and vehicle systems all with one control knob. For 2008, a rearview camera is added to the list of standard gizmos, as is a hands-free communications setup. The included SmartKey system allows the user to keep his or her keys in their pocket. The car "senses" the driver approach, activates locator lighting, and unlocks the doors. Once the driver is seated, the vehicle starts with the push of a button. Rear parking assist and dual-zone climate control are also standard on all G-Class models. The G55 AMG model features a 5.5L supercharged V8 engine that produces 493 horsepower and 516 ft-lbs of torque. It's connected to a five-speed adaptive automatic transmission with touch-shifting.The tires are monstrous 285/55VR18 treads with 18-inch AMG-specific aluminum wheels. The upgraded brakes are slotted and vented discs. Four exhaust tips extend out the back. A silver-painted grille and chrome turn signal cages complete the exterior appearance upgrade. Inside, Nappa leather upholstery and hand-polished maple wood trim enhance the aura of luxury.Known as a Gelandewagen (or cross-country vehicle) at home, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class was originally built as a military vehicle. Offered for many years to European customers, Mercedes-Benz finally brought the vehicle to North America in 2002, and named it the G-Class. Appropriate to its military heritage, the G-Class continues to be built with heavy-duty truck-style suspension and axles for 2008. The solid front and rear axles and three locking differentials will appeal to fans of hard-core off-roading, which is where the G-Class shines brightest. The utilitarian appearance of the G-Class further illustrates its military heritage. The vehicle's boxy appearance, the front grille and sharp edges seem to suggest that it was machined from a solid block of steel. The spare tire is even housed on the rear tailgate and encased in a stainless-steel shell. The G-Class weighs in at a hefty 5,500 pounds.

Weekly Recap: An '80s encore in the auto world

Sat, Jul 11 2015

The '80s returned in a big way this week, as National Lampoon's, Ghostbusters, Miami Vice, and even Tetris were back in the news. While there were far more serious topics (see below), nostalgia mingled with modern marketing to put these Reagan-era favorites back in the spotlight. The '80s were alternately cold and corny at times, but their cultural touchstones can still generate big money. That's why Infiniti recreated an iconic scene from National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) for an advertisement that hawks the QX60 crossover. Actor Ethan Embry, who played Rusty Griswold in a later Lampoon's movie, pilots the Infiniti – which is serving as a modern Family Truckster – for a trip to Walley World. A blonde pulls alongside in a red Lamborghini. They flirt, and she drives on. Christie Brinkley, who played the original girl in the red sports car (she drove a Ferrari in the '83 flick), is riding shotgun and chides Embry with: "A blonde. In a convertible. Seriously?" Okay, it's hardly on the level of "here's looking at you," or even "you can't handle the truth," but it should resonate with '80s babies, many of whom are now having children of their own and moving into three-row SUVs like the QX60. Naturally, Hollywood is going back to the well, too, with a Vacation remake that premiers July 29. Meanwhile, Ghostbusters is returning next year, and director Paul Feig offered a peak at the new Eco-1 in this tweet. In the 1984 classic, the team drove a modified 1959 Cadillac. Now, it will drive a late '80s Cadillac. As expected, the announcement generated support and controversy from movie and car enthusiasts. His tweet had generated several thousand retweets and favorites in the days following the news. Though the '80s Caddy looks, uh, less elegant in comparison to the now-iconic fins and curves of the original Ecto-1, it's about the same time lapse into the past as the '59 Caddy was to viewers in 1984. Speaking of 1984, Miami Vice, which debuted that year on NBC, is seeing one of its hero cars hit the auction block, Mecum Auctions announced this week. The 1986 Ferrari used on the show will be offered for sale Aug. 15 during Monterey classic car week. The white supercar runs a 390-hp flat 12-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission and was in storage after the show ended in 1989 until earlier this year. It has 16,124 miles on the odometer and is authenticated by Ferrari North America and Classiche.

Mercedes A-Class next up for facelift

Sun, Jan 11 2015

This is the coming Mercedes-Benz A-Class, and in case the paucity of camouflage didn't make it clear, it won't look much different the one that's been on sale for all of two years. Caught in Sweden braving the temperatures, its exterior updates aren't expected to go much further than a reworked face that brings it in line with the recently updated B-Class, including a new grille, headlights and taillights, and bumpers. The cabin is where most of the work is being done, to give it a better punch against the BMW 1 Series. A tweaked dash cluster, better fabrics and materials, the eight-inch tablet-style nav/multimedia screen, and ambient lighting should join the party. The updated range of B-Class engines should also make the jump into the A. A photo caught at a dealer meeting in Barcelona last year makes us pretty sure it will be introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year. Until then, there are spy shots to peruse.

2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series [w/video]

Fri, 15 Nov 2013

The biggest misconception about the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is that it's simply a higher-performing version of the SLS GT - a closer look, or better yet, a few hot laps on a high-speed racing circuit, reveals that is anything but the case.
Launched in the States in mid-2011, the standard SLS GT is a 583-horsepower, all-aluminum, gull-wing coupe with performance that positions it near the top of the exotic segment. While the AMG team at Mercedes-Benz could have left it alone, their experience with the SLS AMG GT3 race car said there was room for improvement, so they devised the SLS Black Series. The transformation from SLS GT to SLS Black Series is extensive, with no fewer than 17 different significant enhancements.
The engine mapping, crankshaft, connecting rods, valve-train, intake, exhaust and cooling are all modified and the engine's redline bumps up from 7,200 to 8,000 rpm, which pushes output of the hand-built 6.3-liter V8 to 622 horsepower. The power steering receives a new ratio, a coil-over AMG Adaptive Performance suspension is installed along with underbody braces, the track is widened, two-piece carbon-ceramic brakes replace iron rotors at each corner and a lightweight titanium exhaust is fitted beneath. The AMG Speedshift seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is modified and an electronically controlled AMG rear differential lock ensures the power goes to the pavement. Last on the mechanical upgrades are new lightweight forged wheels (10x19 inches front and 12x20 inches rear) wrapped in special R-compound Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires.
