I have owned this beautiful G500 for almost 5 years, and have kept it under Mercedes Benz warranty the entire time (warranty expires 6/22/14).  I wanted the vehicle to look exactly as it does, and it took some time and expense to get it there.  The wheels are powder coated in textured black. The stereo/nav was replaced with a Kenwood, ipod friendly unit, with much updated nav, etc., amp and 10" sub in back.  Obviously, this gives you much better navigation and a much, much better stereo.  The Hannibal roof rack was not available in the US until I bought this one, and it was a couple of thousand dollars, but makes the vehicle.  The rear spare tire is a BF Goodrich all-terrain like the others, and contains locking storage compartment, for that more off-road (and black) look.  The four rolling tires are in great shape.  It has the brush guard, light guards, etc. in black as well.  The stock spare tire cover (chrome surround, etc) comes with the truck if you like that look, but it will not fit over the BFG tire, as well as the stock stereo.  There are full weather tech rubber mats covering entire floor in vehicle and cargo area. The truck has 115,000 miles at this point, and we are reluctantly replacing it with something newer for a daily driver.  Already have a 911 TT that just sits in the garage or this would be kept.  I never get tired of looking at this car.  If you are not familiar with G-wagens, you should familiarize yourself with them before bidding on this vehicle.  They are amazing vehicles designed with specific purposes in mind.  For example, this car will drive around on hills in the snow like there is no snow.  They are amazing.  However, they are not Range Rovers.  They are not luxury grocery haulers.  If you have not driven one, much less a 7 year old one, you should do so before buying this vehicle.  It has been maintained as well as any G-wagen around, but they are noisy, rough-riding, somewhat uncivilized vehicles. Knowing that, there is not a more unique ride around.  If you like attention, or you don't, you are going to get a lot of it.  Email me with questions or to request more pictures at rnridout@ridoutlumber.com.  I had a little trouble uploading some of the pictures for some reason so some did not make it into ad.  There is one star on the windshield and one small ding that looks like it was caused by a golf ball beside the gas door.  I have included a picture of each.  The pockets on inside bottom of the two front doors have been removed because they creak constantly when driving.  BTW, this car is not being sold b/c of the accident.  After had already decided to sell, wife's foot stuck under brake because of UGG boot, and she hit car in school parking lot.  Brush guard bent and hit passenger front fender crimping it slightly; nothing mechanical.  All parts replaced, and repair carries lifetime warranty.  You cannot tell it occurred.  Car looks amazing.  Happy bidding.

Continental Automotive recalls 5 million airbag control units

Thu, Feb 4 2016

Takata isn't the only supplier having airbag problems. Rival manufacturer Continental Automotive Systems announced a recall of 5 million airbag control units fitted to vehicles from Honda, Fiat Chrysler Automotive, Mercedes-Benz, and even a certain Chrysler-based Volkswagen. This sweeping recall has actually been in progress for some time, although the exact scope is only now becoming evident. In October of 2015, Mercedes-Benz recalled 2008 and 2009 model year C- and GLK-Class vehicles because their Continental-made airbag control units could corrode. Such a condition could cause the airbags to deploy without cause or warning, or in the event of a crash, not deploy at all. You can read all about it in our post from last year. Now, Continental's recall is going wide. Alongside the already recalled C and GLK, you've already heard about the 2008 and 2009 Honda Accord airbag recall, which we reported on yesterday. Now, Fiat Chrysler is announcing the recall of the 2009 Dodge Journey, as well as the 2008 and 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town and Country, and their rebadged counterpart, the Volkswagen Routan. Yes, one manufacturer is recalling another manufacturer's vehicle. The models listed above only amount to about 580,000 vehicles out of 5 million bad airbag control units. And since Continental will notify manufacturers who will then issue their own recalls, it's extremely likely that more brands and vehicles will be ensnared. Stay tuned. Car subscription services: A slow, expensive start — but the potential is huge

Wed, Dec 26 2018

Americans are used to paying for subscriptions — to magazines and cable television, for instance — but experience shows they'll cancel when the price of admission gets too high, or there are more tempting alternatives. Cord cutters ditched nearly 1.5 million pay-TV subscriptions in 2017, according to a survey by Leichtman Research Group. Cable TV started out cheap with basic offerings, and then got expensive. The auto industry's subscription offerings are new, but they're starting out costly, and not price-competitive with traditional leasing. The upside is that they take the hassle out of car ownership for busy people by letting the service take care of maintenance, insurance, licensing and taxes. And they give consumers choice, often allowing relatively painless switches between different cars in the automakers' lineup. Subscription services also point the way toward an ownership-free auto experience, and offer an easy transition to a potential world where ride- and car-sharing will be dominant. Subscriptions are here to stay, but consumers may take a while to "get" them. Lincoln's subscription service for lightly used 2015 to 2017 models, offered through the Ford-owned Canvas beginning this year, got off to a slow start. Many early subscribers canceled. Last month, Cadillac announced it would " temporarily pause" its $1,800-per-month Book subscription service for "adjustments" as of December 1. According to the Wall Street Journal, "Snags with the back-end technology used to support the service made some customer-service functions tedious and time-consuming, adding costs for the company." The challenge for automakers is to come up with a strategy that offers consumers a compelling, affordable option to regular ownership, and one that can also make a profit. I think they'll find that sweet spot, but they're not there yet. Jack Nerad, former executive editorial director at Kelley Blue Book and author of " The Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying or Leasing a Car," points out that "A lot of people expected that subscriptions would be very valuable for people who wanted inexpensive transportation, but the reality is quite the opposite. Subscriptions are offering more choices for the wealthy.
