With great regret, I'm selling my beloved 1985 G wagon.  With the success of our overlanding company, Vermont Overland, unfortunately, the G wagon, while possibly one of the most capable (if not, hands down, the coolest) vehicles I've ever driven, is just too vintage and exotic to use for commercial overland guiding.  The truck has been meticulously maintained at Performance Unlimited here in Woodstock and we've kept up with everything until the latest problem, a disconcerting tick in the auto gearbox.  At first, we had trouble locating the source of the tick, but we removed the front drive shaft and isolated the sound to the transmission.  With multiple Vermont Overland events approaching, including our flagship event, Vermont Overland Trophy, we had no choice but to run out and buy a truck that would be a lot easier to maintain for commercial use and now we've decided that, instead of going through the trouble of delving into the innards of the G tranny, we're going to let it go at a price that will make it palatable for the buyer to do so or, better yet, swap an OM 617A tdi engine and tranny into the truck.

The good:

- Excellently maintained at Performance Unlimited in Woodstock, Vermont
-33x10.5xR15 BFG KM2s on stock aluminum wheels on new stock springs (no rubbing whatsoever)
-TJM 9000 lb winch with synthetic line with remote and on/off switch and Lucky8 soft-shackle hook on a Performance Unlimited custom winch-plate
-24 volt LED flood lamps
-Performance Unlimited custom front diff cover
-custom high-mounted stainless exhaust system
-Performance Unlimited custom gas tank skid plate
-Performance Unlimited custom integrated rock-sliders (made to look like normal rocker panels)
-in dash CD/DVD/Bluetooth entertainment system including integrated Iphone charger
-Radio Shack CB radio with Performance Unlimited custom-mounted 4' wire whip antenna
-new front brakes (I have new rear drums and shoes that go with the truck)
-new steering tie rod and all new ball joints and tie rod ends.
-heavy duty high-mounted G500 steering dampener
-all gauges function properly
-hydraulic diff lockers function properly (they are a miracle of German engineering)
-t-case is in good order
-new fuel pump and filter
-new radiator
-new thermostat (not yet installed, the old one was sticking, so we removed it and run it cool for the summer with plan to install in the fall)
-original rear inward-facing jumpseats
-interior seating in good condition (rugged tan vinyl).  Driver seat showing some signs of wear.
-all seatbelts, including rear jump seats functioning properly
-new alternator

The bad:

-transmission tick:  vehicle still shifts fine, but the tick is disconcerting.  Most likely, tranny will need to be pulled and overhauled.  I've confirmed with my parts man, Vlad at 4x4Club in NJ, that he has all parts necessary for overhaul.
- engine drips oil (they all do).  It probably burns some too.  I usually add 1-2 quarts between 2000 mi change intervals.
-body work:   as depicted in the photos, the G has various tree scruff marks, rock dings and other trail scars.  That said, the truck looks pretty awesome in its utilitarian, somewhat trail-weathered condition.  Not your usual Gwagon mall-crawler, this G wears its hard work with pride.
-rear bump-stops (I have new ones that I've been meaning to install as the old ones have corroded; new ones will go with the truck)

You'll note I've removed the rear bumperettes.   Doing so increases off-road departure angle tremendously; plus I think it just looks really cool from the rear.  I still have the original bumperettes, which are included, but they're pretty beat up.   This truck is perfect for the vintage G enthusiast who wants to get out and use his/her G as it was intended.  You can either have a Mercedes shop fix the tranny or go whole-hog and swap in a tdi from a mid-80's 300d sedan and you'll have a true gold-standard overlanding rig.

Further detailed photos will be sent upon request.

Oh, and I have an unobtainium full-length stainless-steel Gwagon expedition roof rack (it's missing the clamps) that I'll throw in for the buy it now purchaser.

Truck is sold as-is, where-is.   I'll need a $500 deposit upon auction ending and full payment within 3 days.   We'll need pick-up within 30 days (truck is kept inside in my barn).

Buyer provides shipping, although I may be able to arrange for custom shipping at $3.50/mile paid directly to the shipper.

Thanks and happy bidding!

Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG is Affalterbach's first big leap into the little pond

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

The recent history of AMG is turning out amped-up versions of Mercedes-Benz offerings that would hardly ever be mistaken for their sedate counterparts. Sure, you'd need to pay attention to pick a G-Class from the G63 AMG, but dual side-pipes are a quick giveaway. The Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG is not only a new era in Affalterbach's attention on smaller cars, it is probably also the most subtle transformation we can think of in the line-up.
Low and chunky enough in standard guise to make a sporting impression, the aesthetic makeover is confined to black trim around the lower rim of the hatch, black wheels with red brake calipers and a single, rectangular exhaust tip on either side of the diffuser. It's easier to make a positive ID inside, where the flat-bottomed steering wheel, red seatbelts and red-rimmed details say, "You know what I am..."
If the car is running, though, it won't take but a second. The 2.0-liter turbo spitting 360 horsepower and 332 pound-feet will grumble through a sport exhaust at idle, and bellow through the same on it's way to a 0-60 time of less than 4.5 seconds. And if you need something that looks a little harder - and you want those quad pipes - then the A45 AMG Edition 1 is the treasure you seek. There's a press release below for all the info you'll need until the hot hatch goes on sale in Germany later this year, and photos for the rest of us while we wait to find out if we'll get a chance to buy it.

Formula One speeds towards radical thousand-horsepower shakeup

Wed, Feb 11 2015

The teams, the drivers, the fans, the circuits... few, if any, were satisfied with how Formula One has shaped up since the current regulations took hold last year. But that doesn't mean they aren't working on it. At a recent meeting of the F1 Strategy Group, the leading parties in the sport outlined a new framework that would radically shake up the cars themselves while keeping costs in check. And the biggest change could see the engines producing around 1,000 horsepower. Although a proposal put forth by Ferrari to ditch the current V6 hybrid engines in favor of new twin-turbocharged units was rejected by Honda and Mercedes, the members of the group approved in principal to increase the fuel flow in the existing engines to dramatically boost output. As it stands, the current 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engines develop around 600 horsepower, with an additional 160 or so kicked in by the electric Energy Recovery System, for a combined output of about 760 hp. What's not clear at the moment is whether the increased fuel flow would necessitate either the return of mid-race refueling (currently banned) or the installation of larger fuel tanks. Red Bull and McLaren also submitted proposals to radically redesign the shape of the cars as well, however a more evolutionary approach was adopted instead. Though far from finalized, the new design would keep the same basic form of the current chassis, but with adjustments to make them more aesthetically pleasing while producing more downforce. Wider tires are also said to be part of the mix. With more power and more grip from the tires and aero, the resulting cars would most certainly end up going much faster than the current ones, which are already starting to nudge the lap records at some of the circuits, many of which were set during the V10 era. The F1 Strategy Group is made up of representatives of the FIA, Formula One Management and six leading teams. The next step will be for the teams' technical directors to iron out how to implement what their bosses have agreed to. If they settle the details fast enough, the revised regulations could be pushed through in time for next season. Mercedes caught testing stretched E-Class Maybach

Fri, Aug 21 2015

The Mercedes-Maybach S600 won't be the only vehicle to wear the hyphenated name of two of the world's automotive luxury greats. That hulking S-Class will soon be joined by an E-Class variant, which should offer the same touch of subtle luxury as its big brother. At least, that's what we're guessing based on the latest round of spy photos, showing a stretched E-Class with some very telling camouflage. Pay attention, as our spies did, to the rear doors and C-pillar. Like the Maybach S600, the E-Class model features a larger quarter window, although unlike the S, the doors here look to be a bit larger than your usual E550 or E250. Also take note of the heavy tint on those rear windows. It's likely there to obscure whatever sumptuous hides and warm woods Maybach has fitted to the typically business-class interior. While the interior materials are likely to see sweeping changes, expect Mercedes to treat the exterior with a much gentler touch. There'll probably be some unique wheels and C-pillar-mounted Maybach badges, like what we've already seen on the S600. Check out the full round of spy photos up top, and stay tuned for more on the latest Mercedes-Maybach. Related Video:
