FOR AUCTION: Selling my beautiful, Southern California 2003 Mercedes-Benz C240 sedan. Car is in excellent condition and pristine in many ways. Originally sold out of Laguna Niguel, original sticker price over $35,000. Clean title, not a salvage.

Car is the sought-after and hard-to-find black and tan combination, and a truly timeless body style. Definitely the nicest, most solid and reliable car I’ve ever owned, including several other Mercedes. I would keep it forever if I didn’t need something larger ASAP. Easily holds its own against any other Mercedes; actually better quality than some newer models.

THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE

This car is a pleasure to drive. Incredibly comfortable, power everything, with all the controls at your fingertips. Car is equipped with all you’d expect and more: leather and wood interior, six-CD changer in glove box, power back shade, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, tinted moonroof/sunroof, great air and heater, individual climate controls, full power seats, auto lights, rain-sensing windshield, etc., etc.

The car has low, mostly highway miles. The V6 engine is a perfect combination of power when you need it and GREAT on gas mileage, especially for a luxury car. It is not uncommon to get 30+ MPG HIGHWAY if you’re just a little light on the pedal. Super-smooth five speed automatic transmission. Safety-wise, the car is built like a tank, yet still drives light and responsively. Google it: both critics and people who own this car LOVE it.

Besides being great looking & driving, this car has NO MECHANICAL OR ELECTRICAL ISSUES outside of normal wear (brake pads, burned-out bulbs), either now or since I’ve owned it. The maintenance and care of this car have been top-notch: always garaged, oil and filters changed at frequent intervals; top-of-the-line tires and alignment; suspension parts maintained/updated as needed; regular multi-step exterior cleaning and waxing; leather deep-cleaned, carpets shampooed, interior wood treated, et cetera. In fact, at its last California smog check the car had ALMOST ZERO EMISSIONS. It should qualify for the carpool lane!

This is a totally solid, very nice car. Has been my daily driver and I couldn’t be happier with its performance and reliability. Between the build quality, engineering and maintenance, I’m confident it should have at least another 100K miles or more in its life span if proper maintenance continues.

Details:

ENGINE / TRANSMISSION / DRIVETRAIN

Great! No issues. Obviously you’re not going to win any drag races with this car, but that’s probably not what you’re looking for anyway. Car is just over 126,500 miles, which is low for the age and low for the projected life span of a Mercedes.

EXTERIOR

Body and trim are in excellent condition. Incredibly straight with clean, flowing lines. Does have several (literally) small surface dings, but nothing super-noticeable, and far fewer than most other eleven-year-old cars. Plus, thanks to the thoughtfulness of a drunk driver in February, the car has a brand new OEM Mercedes rear bumper, courtesy the nicest Mercedes repair shop in Beverly Hills.

All the glass is excellent with original factory tint. Front grille shows some minor pitting/wear. All rubber and seals, excellent.

The gloss black finish is also nice. The car is black, and eleven years old, so it does have the expected wear & tear, minor/shallow surface scratches and/or swirl marks in some areas. There are also a few spots where a former owner (not me) did a black nail polish touch up, only sort of noticeably on front left fender (see picture), and it’s not even bad. Also, the paint on the top of the front bumper is starting to fade in a few spots. But in all candor, none of this really stands out and is hard to spot unless you’re actually looking for it. The car is eleven years old and shows far less wear than other similar vehicles. It looks like its pictures… lovely. ;)

INTERIOR

Excellent condition. Very clean. All electronics, everything works fine. Very importantly, the leather seats are supple and show almost no wear; there is no cracking anywhere. As mentioned, the carpets are shampooed and nice; all the door panels and plastic are in great shape; the wood finish is also superb. The steering wheel has some exterior wear and the factory floormats have wear as well.

The single electronic issue (in the entire car) is the trunk release does not work on the keyfob remote.

TIRES / BRAKES / SUSPENSION

Great condition. Recently aligned; has three nearly-new top-of-the-line BF Goodrich’s and one Pirelli (thank you, huge nail). Newer brake pads. Spare is a full-size Continental, shows no wear. All original jack, spare lug nuts and tow-hook are here. Aluminum alloy wheels are also in nice shape.

THE BOTTOM LINE

This is a really nice, clean, comfortable, great-looking, running, and driving, reliable car. It is eleven years old, so it’s not perfect and does show some wear. However, this car has been well cared-for, even babied, and is in amazing shape for its age and price point. LOW, FAIR RESERVE, so bid with confidence.

Comes with all original manuals, paperwork, and window sticker. I also have some extra bulbs and the like which I will include.

Recharge Wrap-up: BMW i3 goes against Mercedes B-Class ED, Tesla good for business

Wed, Sep 17 2014

Car and Driver has published a comparison test pitting the 2014 BMW i3 against the 2014 Mercedes-Benz B-class Electric Drive. The test not only measured the quality of the driving experience, but also all the quantitative details that are especially important when looking at electric vehicles. For instance, the Benz's real-world MPGe surpassed its own rating, but it still couldn't match the BMW. The B-Class, though, won in the range department. We won't spoil all the results, or Car and Driver's overall pick, but you can head over to the article to find out for yourself. Tesla's expanding business, including the Gigafactory being built in Reno, NV, is encouraging growth in the locales and associated businesses. Some of Tesla's suppliers are talking of relocation, wanting to be close to the action stirred up by the electric automaker's expansion. It makes good business sense to be in the same neighborhood as Tesla. "We can react quickly, and our engineers are constantly working with Tesla," says Futuris General Manager Sam Coughlin. Brookings Institute fellow Jennifer Vey says, "The land around Tesla is being redeveloped and reimagined. It's a mash-up of an anchor campus, startups, housing and transit, in a physically compact area where companies can cluster and connect." Read more at San Jose Mercury News. EVs are doing even more to reduce energy use clean up the air, according to new analysis from the Union of Concerned Scientists. According to findings, 60 percent of Americans now live in areas where EVs do more to reduce emissions than hybrids, up from 45 percent in 2012. Average electricity use is now 0.325 kWh per mile, down five percent from 2011. EV performance - in terms of mileage and emissions - is improving compared to traditional fuel vehicles, based on the sources of electricity in various regions. Read more from the Union of Concerned Scientists. Zipcar's carsharing network has launched in Paris. Zipcar is expanding across Europe, and has already established itself in Austria, Spain and the UK. According to Zipcar France's General Manager Etienne Hermite, "In a highly populated city, Zipcar's model has been proven to remove up to 15 personally owned vehicles from the road for each Zipcar in service, reducing parking demand, congestion and emissions." Zipcar European President Massimo Marsili hopes that most Parisians will eventually be just a short walk from a Zipcar.

2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series [w/video]

Fri, 15 Nov 2013

The biggest misconception about the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is that it's simply a higher-performing version of the SLS GT - a closer look, or better yet, a few hot laps on a high-speed racing circuit, reveals that is anything but the case.
Launched in the States in mid-2011, the standard SLS GT is a 583-horsepower, all-aluminum, gull-wing coupe with performance that positions it near the top of the exotic segment. While the AMG team at Mercedes-Benz could have left it alone, their experience with the SLS AMG GT3 race car said there was room for improvement, so they devised the SLS Black Series. The transformation from SLS GT to SLS Black Series is extensive, with no fewer than 17 different significant enhancements.
The engine mapping, crankshaft, connecting rods, valve-train, intake, exhaust and cooling are all modified and the engine's redline bumps up from 7,200 to 8,000 rpm, which pushes output of the hand-built 6.3-liter V8 to 622 horsepower. The power steering receives a new ratio, a coil-over AMG Adaptive Performance suspension is installed along with underbody braces, the track is widened, two-piece carbon-ceramic brakes replace iron rotors at each corner and a lightweight titanium exhaust is fitted beneath. The AMG Speedshift seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is modified and an electronically controlled AMG rear differential lock ensures the power goes to the pavement. Last on the mechanical upgrades are new lightweight forged wheels (10x19 inches front and 12x20 inches rear) wrapped in special R-compound Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires.

2015 Malaysian F1 GP springs hot, humid surprises [spoilers]

Sun, Mar 29 2015

In the two weeks since Australia both Mercedes and Ferrari spoke of the improved performance from their respective cars. In Malaysia, Ferrari showed it. Lewis Hamilton still put his Mercedes-AMG Petronas on pole position, but Sebastian Vettel got within two whiskers of the Brit, lining up second just 0.074 behind. Afterward, Vettel said Ferrari could win the race if everything went well. But in qualifying we didn't know how much of Ferrari's performance was truly down to the car and how much was down to the wet weather that struck near the beginning of Q2. The rain didn't hamper Nico Rosberg's run – the German said "I just didn't drive good enough" – and he took third spot in the second Mercedes-AMG Petronas. Showing what the Infiniti Red Bull Racing chassis can do when the power unit is working properly, teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat grabbed fourth and fifth. Whippersnapper Max Verstappen, in his second race, qualified in sixth with an excellent drive through the rain; just 0.030 behind Kvyat, he said he could have got fifth if he hadn't had a running problem with his brakes. Williams head of vehicle performance Rob Smedley said he wouldn't complain about Mercedes' advantage, but Felipe Massa has spent the whole season so far banging the alarm about Ferrari's pace. He says Williams has lost its straight-line advantage, part of the reason the first Grove car is back in seventh, while Valtteri Bottas is in eighth. Between them was Romain Grosjean in the Lotus, but he got dropped two positions for a pit-lane infraction in Q2, so he'll be tenth. Ahead of him is Marcus Ericsson in the Sauber, who would lead the charge to turn in another surprise for the Swiss team. But the real surprise came from the Scuderia Ferrari, who, on a bright, sunny day proved that they don't need to add water for race-winning pace. While Hamilton got made usual awesome start at the lights, Vettel channeled that other famous German Ferrari driver and immediately cut across the track to intimidate Rosberg, maintaining his second place position into the first turn. Arguably the race-winning move came three laps later at that same turn, when Ericsson plunged in too fast and swapped ends, beaching the rear of his Sauber in the gravel trap. The safety car came out when the recovery truck emerged to retrieve the Sauber, and nearly all of the front-runners took to the pits to swap out of the medium tires. Vettel, however, didn't.
