Pristinely Restorable 1971 Mercedes 280sl on 2040-cars
Winter Park, Florida, United States
This car was owned by the former General Sales Manager of a large Mercedes dealership in Jacksonville for 20 years, and as a result this car comes with factory parts and service manuals, as well as most of the invoices for work and parts that have been replaced. This car has a Good, Clear, Florida Title (Not Salvage/Rebuilt) and this title is with the car. This car is being sold for personal reasons, not particularly financial ones. This car was disassembled by the owner, and parts were labeled and placed into Zip-Lock bags as they were removed. This is a 1971 280SL, which is one of the rarest 280SLs ever produced. Only an estimated 420 1971 280SLs were ever sold in the US, and 1971 was the last year they were made. This car should be considered to be the closest to having the least rust of any 280SL that is available for restoration. The pictures should be clear enough to see clear examples of where this car needs bodywork, this is the reason why I have donated my time in the direction of chemically removing most of the paint to display the well preserved metal underneath. This car is very close to being placed upon a rotisserie, media blasted, and then painted in zinc chromate primer. The car has such low rust that it will probably be able to pass the small screwdriver test, where the tip of the screwdriver should not perforate any floor panel or body part. As evidenced by the extremely good condition of the original transmission (in the pictures) this car has been very well preserved. This car comes with every part that is in the pictures. The owner purchased all of the OEM parts while he was at the Mercedes Dealership as the General Sales Manager. A very large number of parts were bought for this car, including brand new bumpers, and nearly every piece of rubber. The engine and the transmission ran fine before the car was disassembled, and much care was taken to label the zip lock bags with parts inside of them. If you would like more details about the parts that are included, or would like close up shots of the part numbers, please contact us. The factory metal plates are intact and original, under the hood and the left door jam. The soft top frame is included with the car, and is located underneath the hard top. The color code for this car is 906 Silver Blue Metallic. There is no stamped metal number in the hood, but all of the gaps on the car generally look good. The $550 Mercedes-Benz matching toolkit and bag for this car is included. The engine number is 130983 12 013109, and the car and engine both have less than 95,000 miles, and a professional Mercedes Engine Re-manufacturer has inspected the engine, and has confirmed that the engine turns over freely, and the rack on the injection pump moves freely. At 90,000 miles the engine head was professionally re-manufactured at the Jacksonville dealership using only quality Mercedes-Benz parts. This car does not have carpets, an exhaust system, a fuel tank, or a front windshield. My suggestion on where to find the replacement parts are From Mercedes Benz, new: Fuel tank 113 470 0701 $1,100 list F windshield 113 671 0410 $755 list Mike at Time Valve 321 254-7200 stainless exhaust ~$900 or so Cindy at GAHH 800 722-2292 for carpet kit This car is being sold "AS IS", and a reasonable amount of effort has been committed to ensure that this is an accurate description of this 280SL in pictures and in text. Porsche tops JD Power APEAL study for 12th time
Wed, Jul 27 2016JD Power's 2016 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) study hasn't changed much this time around with Porsche coming in at No.1 for the 12th consecutive year, while BMW was close behind in second. Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz tied for third with Land Rover, Lexus, and Lincoln tied for No.5. The APEAL Study, according to JD Power, measures owners' level of excitement and emotional attachment across 77 parameters. Brands and cars are rated on a 1,000-point scale. The study found that new cars with modern safety features including low speed collision avoidance and blind spot monitoring have higher APEAL scores than vehicles without the features. The overall industry score increased from 798 to 801, which JD Power claims was helped by the launch of a variety of new vehicles. This year, 22 out of 30 new or redesigned cars received a higher score than the vehicle's respective segment average. Porsche is once again at the top of the list as the automaker's score increased by three points to 877. BMW outscored Jaguar to take second place with a score of 859, while the British automaker dropped three points from last year with 852 points. Volkswagen overtook Mini to become the top-ranked non-premium brand with 809 points, while the latter automaker trailed behind by one point. At the end of the scale, Smart came in at the very bottom for the second year in a row with a score of 745 points, which represents an increase of 62 points over last year. Fiat's score increased by six points to 755, but still confined the automaker to second-to-worst place for a consecutive year. Mitsubishi's score increased to 770, up from 755, to become the fourth-worst brand, while Jeep fell to third-worst with a decrease in seven points to 756. General Motors received six segment-level awards, followed by Hyundai with five, and BMW and VW earning four apiece. Surprise segment victories include the Chevrolet Camaro, which outscored the Dodge Challenger, and the Lexus RC which ranked above the BMW 4 and 3 Series. For more information on how the automakers ranked, check out the official release on the 2016 APEAL Study below or visit JD Power's website to analyze the graphs. Smart brand might be doomed
Thu, Oct 25 2018Reports are painting a less than rosy picture of the Smart brand's future. The Daimler-owned carmaker is going fully electric in 2020, but that might not be enough to keep it alive for long. Inside sources, quoted by Automobile Magazine, are saying Renault is likely to pull out of the partnership that created the current Smart ForTwo/Renault Twingo pairing introduced in 2014. The two rear-engined cars share a platform, and when the current Twingo is done for, Renault might want to part ways. In addition, Mercedes isn't willing to prop up Smart on its own, and there is a possibility that the entire Smart brand could be shuttered by 2026. A previous joint venture was the ForFour hatch co-developed with Mitsubishi, and despite the ForFour name living on in the current generation rear-engined car, the earlier FWD hatchback has quickly been forgotten. Not long ago, Smart presented its Forease open-top concept to give customers a glimpse of what future Smart cars would look like, but at its heart the Forease was still a current Smart dressed up with concept car details. The next-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class is to be signed off in 2021 for a 2025 introduction, and it can be underpinned by a more flexible, fully scalable platform that could also serve to support a new entry-level Mercedes-Benz vehicle that could render the separate Smart brand pointless. Then there's Geely, who now owns nearly 10 percent of Daimler, and who is partnering with Daimler to launch a new "premium" ride-hailing venture in China. As Geely develops its mobility solutions, it is likely to keep an eye on Smart: Smart cars have been car-sharing staples around the world for quite a while, from users such as Car2Go. Automobile Magazine says that if a Smart is co-developed with Geely, it might suit the Chinese market well, but a global business case might be challenging. In any case, if Smart wants to survive beyond the current Renault partnership, the new model should be agreed upon quickly, and it must be based on a platform flexible enough to support full electric drive. Reportedly, there are now ongoing feasibility studies for a fully electric Daimler "U-Class," which would include a Smart-like three or five-door hatch with two wheelbase options, a ride-sharing shuttle with autonomous capabilities, and an urban delivery panel van. But Smart must justify itself for the upcoming decades, or the future Daimler products that occupy its niche will be wearing a three-pointed star instead.
Mercedes CLA45 AMG Racing is ready for a spot on the grid
Tue, 10 Sep 2013Mercedes-Benz trotted out its CLA45 AMG-based racer at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. We first showed you the sedan in the deluge of news and reveals that precedes most good auto shows, and were blown away by the car, formally known as the CLA45 AMG Racing Series.
We were strolling by the Mercedes stand, and figured we'd pop in and take a look at the new racer and its carbon-fiber body panels, gutted interior, and race-sourced aero parts. It's a looker, both as a road car and a track weapon. It's not clear what series the CLA45 AMG will qualify for, although it does seem like a shoe-in for the World Touring Car Championship. Let us know what you think of the CLA racer down in the comments. In the meantime, we've got a full gallery of live images up top, along with the stock images that were posted last week on the Mercedes-Benz Facebook page.
