1990 MERCEDES-BENZ

500SL CONVERTIBLE

The car runs very well, handles great, drives like a dream, just as a Mercedes Benz should.  Engine has had a recent full tune up and has lots of power!

It is remarkably quiet…even while driving with the top down!

Also, the catalytic converter has recently been replaced and the car has a beautiful, throaty V-8 exhaust tone.  Just had a complete Mercedes tune up.  Has 2 new rear tires too!

Comes with a Mercedes-Benz car cover.  4 speed automatic. Power top works as it should.   Clear Nevada Title.  Under 71k miles!

Car is ready to go with buying 2 new tires.  Most of the items listed below would not need to be done to drive it away, they could be done in time and you'd have a mint car.  We went over the car noting every inch of the car to point out every tiny detail, every tiny mar or spot, every imperfection that you would want to know so no secrets here!

Mercedes Emblem on the front has been glued in poorly there’s glue that’s squeezed out around the emblem that can be trimmed but it is glued in solidly.  The Mercedes emblem on the hood is sun faded, some of the blue still shows.  The lower air dam panel on the front bumper has some scuffs and paint missing where it’s probably been up against a curb.  Overall the exterior paint is in excellent condition for its age, we don’t think the car has ever been repainted, it doesn’t show any signs of ever being in an accident or ever been repainted.

Haven’t done a Car Fax on it, but it doesn’t appear as though it’s been in a collision.   There are a series of door dings on the outside on the passenger side, predominately along the passenger door, but there are one or two small ones in the rear quarter panel that you notice when the sun reflects on them.

WHEELS

The rear passenger wheel is missing the center cap, we have it but it’s not on the wheel, it won’t stay on.  Both rear tires were recently replaced, less than 100 miles on them.

The front left wheel is the spare wheel, spare tire it’s a directional tire so it shouldn’t stay on the car for an extended period of time or be driven at high speeds because it’s not turning the proper direction of the tire tread.  The car will need 2 new front tires ($450 estimate). The driver’s side tire has a split in the back of it so it won’t hold air.

The Windshield is in very good condition, windshield wipers work.

The car apparently was an Arizona car and appears it was left out in the sun with the top down at times as the sun has dried out some of the leather so the top edge of the windshield frame shows some dry rot.  The vanity mirrors on the sun visors don’t work, they are glued shut probably because they broke and wouldn’t stay on.

The power windows work fine.  The driver’s side power head rest will go up but it won’t go down, you can hear the motor running but for reason it won’t move down, it looks like it’s trying, but it just can’t do it.  The outside edge of the driver’s side seat bolster has a large wear spot and there are quite a few cracks in the leather that would probably need to be repaired.

DOORS & CARPET

The interior door panels on both the driver’s and passenger side are in very good shape.  The carpet’s in excellent condition, it doesn’t show any sign of wear, no stains, no tears found, it would look perfect with a shampooing.   The speaker grill covers have some cracks in them, probably from the driver hitting them getting in and out.  The driver’s door hinge will not let it stay open.

On the dash, the air bag light stays on, the light for the rollover protection system stays on even though the rollover protection system goes up and down properly, so it’s probably just a sensor.   The burl wood around the shifter is a little weather beaten; it has a small surface crack and probably needs to be refinished.  Because the battery was disconnected, the radio requires a code to unlock it which should be available from the Mercedes Benz dealer.  The car has a Sony CD controller in the dash and a 10 disc CD changer in the trunk, haven’t tried the system because it also requires the code.

There is a tear in the leather of the rollover protection bar behind the passenger seat.  The passenger leather seat is in good condition, could benefit by a cleaning/conditioning, no severe cracks or wear through the leather like there is on the driver’s side.  The stainless steel panel the surrounds the leather on the rear deck is very good condition, cleans up nicely, is a bronze aluminum but more likely to be stainless steel.  The wheels are in very good condition.  The wheel that is off of the car has very little curb rash on the edge, nothing serious.   You can hear the motor of the passenger head rest, but the rest doesn’t move up or down.  The trunk area, the trim surrounding the power antennae is loose and has slightly rubbed the paint and needs to be secured.   The switch on the dash doesn’t operate the antennae so it doesn’t work at this time.  Overall condition of the trunk area is very good; carpet is great, no tears, and no dry rot.

The power top is the original convertible top, the fabric is in good shape, and the plastic windows are in good shape.  The headliner inside the top needs to be replaced, it is dry rotted and torn , the webbing on the sides is dry rotted and coming apart and will need to be replaced.  Power top works as it should.

The catalytic converter was recently replaced and a complete tune up was done on the car (receipts available),  however when they replaced the rear tailpipe they didn’t bring it down far enough and it is singeing the plastic trim where the tailpipe comes out of the bottom of the bumper on the driver’s side.

Car comes with a Mercedes car cover.  There is no keyless entry fob with the keys and we only have one ignition key to go with the car.  There is no manual with the car.   There is a clear Nevada title on the car.

How could a lifted Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG be more awesome? Add an axle

Fri, 01 Mar 2013

We are fully confident in saying that this will be the most amazing thing you see all day. First of all, it's a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen - in AMG spec, no less. And it's being shown off in high-definition video glory, blasting through the desert, jumping over sand dunes, and generally being awesome. But here's the kicker: It has six wheels. Three axles. And they're all driven. Holy $%!#.
Under the hood is AMG's usual 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8, and total output is rated at 536 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. That's impressive and all, but do keep in mind that the G63 6x6 weighs in at 8,322 pounds or, you know, the weight of two E-Class sedans. Combine that with its 18 inches of ground clearance, 37-inch tires and five locking differentials and you've got a vehicle capable of, well, everything you've ever imagined or will ever imagine for the rest of your life.
But the goodness doesn't stop once you open the doors. Oh, no. This thing is fit for a king - or a sheik, more appropriately - with ultimately luxurious seating for four. The rear bench seat has been removed in favor of two bucket seats with a fixed console in the middle, and the rear seats have been moved back beyond the usual B pillar to allow for more legroom.

Why we can't have better headlights here in the U.S.

Tue, Mar 13 2018

It wouldn't be a European auto show if we weren't teased with at least one mainstream vehicle we can't have here. At the Geneva Motor Show last week, the small but vocal contingent of shooting-brake buffs lamented that the Mazda6 wagon won't be coming to our shores, although they can take comfort in the fact that the vehicle won't get the torquey 250-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine we'll get here. Mercedes-Benz also announced a new headlight technology in Geneva that likely won't be available here anytime soon. It's just the latest in a long line of innovative and potentially lifesaving front-lighting solutions that the federal government doesn't allow in this country due to outdated standards — and a current lack of leadership at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Mercedes-Benz's new Digital Light system that debuted in Geneva uses a computer chip to activate more than a million micro-reflectors to better illuminate the road ahead. The Digital Light headlamps works with the vehicle's cameras, sensors and navigation mapping to adjust lighting for the given location and situation and to detect other road users. The Digital Light technology also serves as an extended head-up display of sorts by projecting symbols on the pavement ahead to alert drivers to, say, slippery conditions or pedestrians in the road. And it can even project lines on the road in a construction zone or through tight curves to show the driver the correct path. Digital Light will be available on Mercedes-Maybach vehicles later this year, although like any technology it's bound to trickle down to less expensive vehicles. That is, if we ever get it here in the U.S. Audi, a leader in automotive lighting, has repeatedly run into snags trying to bring state-of-the-art car headlights to the U.S. The German luxury automaker's recently introduced matrix laser headlight system, which performs many of the same trick as Mercedes-Benz's Digital Light, also isn't legal on U.S. roads. And five years after the introduction of its matrix-beam LED lighting, which illuminates more of the road without blinding oncoming motorists with brights by simultaneously operating high and low beams, Audi still can't bring that technology to the U.S. either.

Next Mercedes S-Class stretching into this 600 Pullman limo

Fri, 15 Mar 2013

To the concern of nobody in particular, Mercedes-Benz will not be re-upping its Maybach line of ultra-luxury limousines. No, instead the German automaker will be stretching its already roomy S-Class, to make this upcoming 600 Pullman version of the decked-out beast.
The car in our new gallery of spy shots is sporting beefy B-pillars and a massive set of rear doors that should allow perfectly graceful ingress and egress from what is likely to be a palatial rear space. (In one photo we can even see a long-wheelbase S-Class in line with the new Pullman, handily exhibiting the size of the new variant.) The exterior modifications are otherwise obscured, though we can guess at revised front and rear fascia and lighting elements, based on both end being heavily taped for these test runs.
It's a good bet that the Pullman will make use of M-B's twin-turbocharged V12 engine, though sources indicate that a hybrid version might eventually be in the offing, as well.
