Here’s another nice Mercedes convertible we’ve acquired for our Ebay customers.  The quality and detail combined with their powerfully durable 5.6-liter dual overhead cam V-8 engine make these last of the W107-bodied roadsters the most desirable version to come from the Fatherland.  Please contact me directly with any questions or to work out a deal before the auction ends.  My name is Mark Thompson and my phone number is 206/914-1173.  You’re welcome and encouraged to inspect and test-drive this fun convertible.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION:

Ever spent an afternoon driving a classy, vintage Mercedes Benz? What a treat!  Comfort, styling, and versatility all in one gorgeous ride.  For my money, an SL of any variant is one of the best values for the overall driving experience a vintage Benz has to offer.  Look over my photos and I’m sure you’ll agree what a nice car this is.  What you’re viewing is the result of a wash and vacuum only!  I know you’ll admire its overall provenance.  My guess is that it’s spent much of its life garaged because the overall condition is better than many of the other vintage roadsters you’ll likely find for sale here on Ebay.  Rust?  Please, this Mercedes HATES rust and you WON’T find anything here to worry about!  The Puget Sound area is famous for rain, but our winter roads are never salted.  At the first sign of a snowflake everyone panics and just stays home!  Having owned many dozens of Mercedes over three decades, I’ve developed a great appreciation for their style, mechanical reliability and the overall driving experience.

CONDITION:

In total, this is a clean, smoke-free convertible.  I take pride in the vehicles we sell and feel that you should know as much about them as possible.  Accordingly, here’s a list of the good and also a few things needing attention: Hop in; fire up the strong V-8 and it starts immediately – even when cold!  The car idles, runs and drives like I feel it should – consistent, strong oil pressure, a decent battery and good charging system, definitely better overall than most twenty-eight year-old vehicles!  I had our mechanic look it over this week and all that was needed were fresh sparkplugs and an oil change.  On the interior, the black leather bucket seats are in good condition with plenty of spring support on both the base and backrests.  There is one wear spot on the left driver’s bolster from sliding in and out of the seat.  Please notice the rare factory rear seat (very comfortable, assuming you’re a double leg amputee).  If you’ve ever driven a 380 or 450SL roadster you’ll quickly notice these 560SL front buckets are far superior and more comfortable!  They absolutely support your back and bum much better than earlier models seats.  As pictured, both door panels are excellent.  The carpets are also factory and covered with floor mats.  On the outside, the original black paint has a few chips, scratches and thin spots but still plenty of life left.  I would give it a few years yet before doing a good quality re-spray.  The trunk and floorpans are all solid and original; I’ve found NO rust bubbling up under the paint in the rockers or around the wheel wells either.  About the only other things we’ve run across are some cracks in the plastic rear window of the soft top, a windscreen crack on the driver’s side (out of most line-of-vision), inoperable radio speakers and a missing “squirrel cage” heater fan.  The speedometer works great, but both the tach and odometer can be intermittent, so please don’t rely on them.  All four chrome wheels show a little pitting around the edges but are very presentable and even have the chrome lug nut plugs still in place!   All are wrapped with good touring radials, each with at least 70-80% remaining tread.  Overall, a very nice boulevard cruiser that’s been cared-for over the years and will give good service for many more to come!

Because of the amount of money involved in buying a vehicle, we require that Ebay members with a feedback history of five or fewer transactions call or email before placing a bid.  If I don’t have this initial contact, your bid may be cancelled.   As I’ve outlined above, the phone number to talk directly to me is 206/914-1173.  Please feel free to call any time during the auction.  My name is MARK THOMPSON.  You’re encouraged to come by my Auburn, WA warehouse to look over and drive the Mercedes or to have it done by an inspection service.  You might also make an offer as often my vehicles sell to smart “early birds” that call and work out a deal prior to the auction’s end.  I always reserve the right to sell during this period.

A Few Additional Terms and Conditions:

A nonrefundable $500 deposit is due within 48 hours of the auction’s conclusion.  The balance is due by cash or certified funds within seven business days unless prior arrangements have been made with me.  I can accept PAYPAL, but if you plan to pay any more than the deposit through them I’ll first need to invoice you and ask that you cover the 3.5% fee PayPal charges.  Please remember you are bidding to buy and I fully expect the winning bidder to fulfill their Ebay contract!  You’re not bidding to hold or then come inspect and test-drive the vehicle later -- You’re more than welcome to do this before the auction ends.

If you decide to have the car transported home, there are scores of companies to choose from.  I ship vehicles regularly and suggest that you get a transport bid from Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS).  They're eBay’s preferred transporter and will give you a fair quote.  Call toll-free at (866)298-4221.  Give the rep my affiliate number (2362642) and they can pull up all our information for a station-to-station or even door-to-door quote.

As an alternative, you might also get bids from the U-Ship.com website.  You’ll be able to choose a transport broker from multiple offers.  The zip code for pick-up would be 98002 (Auburn, Washington).  The shipping of the vehicle and company chosen are the responsibility of the BUYER

The car can be stored free of charge at my location for up to two weeks after the auction ends assuming full payment has been received.  After that period storage is $20 per day.

Race recap: 2016 Hungarian Grand Prix was the pits

Mon, Jul 25 2016

The Hungarian Grand Prix hasn't seen a race this calculated since 2012, when Lewis Hamilton – driving for McLaren – led from pole position to the checkered flag. We don't expect massive action from the Hungaroring, but Hamilton's first win for Mercedes in 2013, the thrilling wet mess in 2014, and Ferrari's surprising dominance in 2015 made us hope for more on-track commotion this year. Hungary denied us that. Hamilton parked his Mercedes-AMG Petronas in second on the grid but stole the lead through Turn 1 and never looked back. Teammate Nico Rosberg yo-yoed behind him in second place, getting into DRS range on a few occasions but never close enough to pass. Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo kept the leading duo honest, but the Aussie couldn't put genuine fear into the German team and finished third. This is the third year in a row for Ricciardo on the Hungary podium. The pits provided our few scraps of excitement. During a stretch when Ricciardo managed to close on Rosberg, Mercedes told Hamilton to speed up. When Hamilton said he couldn't go faster, Mercedes said they'd pit second-place Rosberg first instead. Suddenly, Hamilton found the extra pace. Ricciardo pitted in early, hoping that fresh tires and fast laps could allow him to pass one or both Mercedes drivers when they pitted, but once Hamilton hit the throttle the Red Bull couldn't respond. Further down the lineup, Jenson Button came in on Lap 5 so McLaren could fix his brake pedal problem. The radio exchange before the stop included one forbidden instruction to Button, though, so the Englishman had to return to the pits for a drive-through penalty. Renault's Jolyon Palmer beat Force India's Nico Hulkenberg in a straight-up pit stop battle on Lap 40, but threw the good work away on Lap 49 with a spin on track that cost him three places. A pit wall miscommunication meant the Force India pit crew wasn't ready for Sergio Perez when the Mexican arrived for his second stop on Lap 43. And Daniel Kvyat's regrettable run at Toro Rosso continued, first with car issues, then a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Sebastian Vettel brought his Ferrari home fourth, sniffing Ricciardo's gearbox at the flag but unable to get around the Red Bull. Max Verstappen enacted a replay of the final stages of the Spanish Grand Prix, finishing fifth by holding Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen behind for 19 laps.

Race recap: 2015 British Grand Prix is a testament to timing

Mon, Jul 6 2015

In front of his home crowd, Lewis Hamilton actually had to work for pole position at the British Formula One Grand Prix. The World Champion couldn't get on top of the setup for his Mercedes-AMG Petronas on Friday, lapping behind teammate Nico Rosberg and the two Ferraris. Come Saturday, after a few alterations and a whole lot of wing to clamp down on understeer, Hamilton returned to his regular program at the front, taking pole position by just over a tenth of a second from his teammate. Williams, thought to be headed for another stretch in the weeds a few races ago, showed its best strength all year. The Grove team got both cars on the second row and in front of the Ferraris, Felipe Massa qualifying ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas, but they were eight and nine tenths behind the Mercedes'. Kimi Raikkonen out-qualified Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel for the second time this year, and only the first time in a straight-up battle with two healthy cars. But more than a second behind the two cars at the front, and with two nearly-impossible-to-pass Williams' in front, neither the Finn nor the German is happy with where they are. Daniil Kvyat claimed seventh, his side of the garage at Infiniti Red Bull Racing having got through the weekend to that point without a single complaint about their Renault power unit. Carlos Sainz, Jr. put a single Toro Rosso inside the top ten in eighth position, ahead of Nico Hulkenberg who did the same for Sahara Force India by slotting in ninth. The second Infiniti Red Bull driven by Daniel Ricciardo did have an unspecified engine complaint – his car kept "bleeding power" on the straights – but even so he managed to qualify tenth with his second-fastest lap. The stewards deleted his best lap because he ran three centimeters outside the track limits at Copse, an infraction that stung a few other drivers as well. Up in front, what would sting the Mercedes-AMG Petronas drivers the most was the start. That's when a dearth of grip struck both Hamilton and Rosberg, allowing Massa and Bottas to slide right up the middle between them and take the first two places. The leapfrogging was so surprising that it looked like the Mercedes drivers were giving the Williams drivers a head start. They diced through the first corners, Hamilton sliding past Bottas into second place halfway through the lap. And then the safety car reported for duty.

Daimler and Volvo could jointly develop internal combustion engines

Sun, Jan 5 2020

BERLIN — Luxury German carmaker Daimler and Volvo, owned by China's Geely, are considering cooperating to cut the costs of developing combustion engines, a magazine reported on Sunday, citing unnamed company sources. The Automobilwoche weekly cited a Volvo manager as saying there were initial talks with Daimler, but no concrete plans, while a company spokesman said it was too early to talk about firm projects, although it was not excluding anybody. A Daimler spokesman said the company's cooperation with Geely, which owns a 10% stake in the German carmaker, was developing in a positive way, but declined to comment further. Global tariffs, accelerated by a trade war between China and the United States, as well as higher investment requirements for electric and autonomous vehicles, are forcing carmakers to seek new ways to cut and share costs. In October, Volvo said it would merge its engine development and manufacturing assets with those of Geely, creating a division to supply in-house brands and also potentially others with next-generation combustion and hybrid engines. Automobilwoche said this new division would start operating by the end of March, which could be a possible starting point for cooperation with Daimler, while a further step could be a partnership to develop electric power trains. Geely and Daimler have said they plan to build the next generation of Smart electric cars in China through a joint venture and the two companies are also cooperating on a premium ride-hailing service in China. Geely bought Volvo Cars in 2010 from Ford, allowing the Swedish brand to operate on an arms-length basis. But in recent years, it has deepened cooperation between the two brands. Volvo already supplies engines to some Geely-branded vehicles, sharing technology through Geely's Lynk brand. Both companies share and develop common vehicle platforms.
