1983 Mercedes 380sl Convertible on 2040-cars
Greensboro, North Carolina, United States
First off, I am listing this vehicle for my Father who does not have an Ebay account. He lives in NC 9 months out of the year and Arizona during the winter months. This vehicle is located in Scottsdale Arizona where he uses the car sparingly as a fun cruiser car. The car has been used in and around the Phoenix area since 2006. It has made many 3-4 hour trips with no problems whatsoever. Now for the history of the car. This car was made in late 1982 and was delivered new to Bob Neil Pontiac GMC and Mercedes in Winston Salem, NC. The purchase price of the car was $43,246.00 and was registered to "Heather Hill Executive" in WS, NC which you can see on the data plate which goes with the car. The car has always been in NC until my Father decided to enclose transport the vehicle to the dry southwest in 2006. He has the original data plate, original owners manaual, the original service booklet (which shows maintenance records), and a copy of the original bill of sale showing the price of $43,246.00. My father purchased the car as what we believe to be the third owner on 2/21/2006. Once he received it, he did the following to the car: replaced the original soft top with a German Heartz cloth top, replaced the AC compressor, new tires, new rubbers around hard top and doors, and new battery. What works: power windows, AC, Heat, Seats, Brakes, Shocks, original Decker AM/FM/Cassette Player, speakers, all gauges, horn, electronics, lights, etc. What does not work; Cruise Control- could be something minor, and power door locks work on driver door and trunk but does not lock passenger door- he was told a cable needs replacing that runs behind rear deck where soft top resides. Should be a minor repair. Driver lower seat belt does not always release easily- could be a bad mechanism or need lubricating. I try to list all issues with any car I list as I would want someone to tell me about before I purchase and find for myself. Just in last couple of weeks, tach was revving, turned out to be a control module for idle. That was replaced/repaired at a cost of $700.00. This car runs great and requires very little maintenance. It just needs to be driven more and enjoyed. I will try to give my interpretation of condition since I just saw and drove the car in January 2014 while visiting in Arizona for the car auctions. The paint is 100% original. Very good condition for 30 years old. No major swirls or paint chips, a couple of small dings, minor scratches but that is it. The interior is very similar; some slight wear on interior parts. Wood dash and console parts are almost perfect (white lines that show in photos are not scratch areas, just light images), there is a hairline crack in original dash pad (very common on these cars, you could place plastic cover over), glass is very good with the exception of ORIGINAL windshield (never seen a 30 year old one in these cars) there are some slight scratches from wipers on windshield being that it is original; might be polished out or live with. Over all, this is one of the nicest original 380 SL's with driven miles that i have seen. I own a 85 380 SL all original with only 84,000 miles and mine is nice but not overall as nice as this original car. So, if you live in the Phoenix area or whether you live far away and either want to see in person or send an agent to inspect the car and review all the paperwork that goes with the car, email me through Ebay and I will set up a time for you to see, drive and inspect the car at your convenience. He does have the hardtop for the car as well, but did not send me individual pictures (you can see in background of photos) but it is as nice as the car itself with no major paint or damage concerns. The car will also be sold with the original hardtop rolling stand and hardtop cover for storage. Bid with confidence as this is not a rattle trap or a rust bucket that will drain your wallet. This is a rust free, mechanically sound vehicle that you can cruise into car shows, drive to work, buy for a student, or just buy and enjoy on weekends like my Father and I do... Again, this was always a pampered Mercedes 380. It was not neglected like you see so many on used car lots for 3,000 to 4,000 for sale and you would have to spend double that to get them mechanically safe and sound. I have a fair reserve on the car. The car is for sale locally as well, so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. and of course like with any old car, there is no expressed warranty and buyers are purchasing as is. Thanks for looking at this great car. Feel free to send a message on any questions you may have. I will respond promptly. Good Luck Bidding!! |

Weekly Recap: An '80s encore in the auto world
Sat, Jul 11 2015The '80s returned in a big way this week, as National Lampoon's, Ghostbusters, Miami Vice, and even Tetris were back in the news. While there were far more serious topics (see below), nostalgia mingled with modern marketing to put these Reagan-era favorites back in the spotlight. The '80s were alternately cold and corny at times, but their cultural touchstones can still generate big money. That's why Infiniti recreated an iconic scene from National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) for an advertisement that hawks the QX60 crossover. Actor Ethan Embry, who played Rusty Griswold in a later Lampoon's movie, pilots the Infiniti – which is serving as a modern Family Truckster – for a trip to Walley World. A blonde pulls alongside in a red Lamborghini. They flirt, and she drives on. Christie Brinkley, who played the original girl in the red sports car (she drove a Ferrari in the '83 flick), is riding shotgun and chides Embry with: "A blonde. In a convertible. Seriously?" Okay, it's hardly on the level of "here's looking at you," or even "you can't handle the truth," but it should resonate with '80s babies, many of whom are now having children of their own and moving into three-row SUVs like the QX60. Naturally, Hollywood is going back to the well, too, with a Vacation remake that premiers July 29. Meanwhile, Ghostbusters is returning next year, and director Paul Feig offered a peak at the new Eco-1 in this tweet. In the 1984 classic, the team drove a modified 1959 Cadillac. Now, it will drive a late '80s Cadillac. As expected, the announcement generated support and controversy from movie and car enthusiasts. His tweet had generated several thousand retweets and favorites in the days following the news. Though the '80s Caddy looks, uh, less elegant in comparison to the now-iconic fins and curves of the original Ecto-1, it's about the same time lapse into the past as the '59 Caddy was to viewers in 1984. Speaking of 1984, Miami Vice, which debuted that year on NBC, is seeing one of its hero cars hit the auction block, Mecum Auctions announced this week. The 1986 Ferrari used on the show will be offered for sale Aug. 15 during Monterey classic car week. The white supercar runs a 390-hp flat 12-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission and was in storage after the show ended in 1989 until earlier this year. It has 16,124 miles on the odometer and is authenticated by Ferrari North America and Classiche.
Mercedes CLA45 AMG Racing is ready for a spot on the grid
Tue, 10 Sep 2013Mercedes-Benz trotted out its CLA45 AMG-based racer at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. We first showed you the sedan in the deluge of news and reveals that precedes most good auto shows, and were blown away by the car, formally known as the CLA45 AMG Racing Series.
We were strolling by the Mercedes stand, and figured we'd pop in and take a look at the new racer and its carbon-fiber body panels, gutted interior, and race-sourced aero parts. It's a looker, both as a road car and a track weapon. It's not clear what series the CLA45 AMG will qualify for, although it does seem like a shoe-in for the World Touring Car Championship. Let us know what you think of the CLA racer down in the comments. In the meantime, we've got a full gallery of live images up top, along with the stock images that were posted last week on the Mercedes-Benz Facebook page.
Foreign automakers pay from $38 to $65 per hour to non-union workers
Sun, Mar 29 2015As leaders for the United Auto Workers gather in Detroit for their Special Convention on Collective Bargaining to work out the negotiating stance for this year's new labor agreements with the Detroit 3 automakers, what they most want to do is figure out how to eliminate the two-tier wage scale. However, the lower Tier 2 wage has allowed the domestic automakers to reduce their labor costs, hire more workers, and compete better with their import competition. As it stands, per-hour labor rates including benefits are $58 at General Motors, $57 at Ford, and $48 at Fiat-Chrysler – a reflection of FCA's much greater number of Tier 2 workers. The Center for Automotive Research released a study of labor rates (including benefits) that put numbers to what the imports pay: Mercedes-Benz pays the most, at an average of $65 per hour, Volkswagen pays the least, at $38 per hour, and BMW is just a hair above that at $39 per hour. Among the Detroit competitors, Honda workers earn an average of $49 per hour, at Toyota it's $48 per hour, Nissan is $42 per hour, and Hyundai-Kia pays $41 per hour. The lower import wages are aided by their greater use of temporary workers compared to the domestics. Automotive News says the ten-dollar gap between those foreign camakers and the domestics turns out to about an extra $250 per car in labor, which adds up quickly when you're pumping out many millions of cars. That $250-per-car number is one that, come negotiating time, the Detroit 3 will want to reduce, as the UAW is trying to raise both Tier 1 and Tier 2 wages. Another wrinkle is that the domestic carmakers are considering the wide adoption of a third wage level lower than Tier 2. Some workers who do minor tasks like assembling parts trays kits and battery packs already make less than Tier 2, but the UAW will be quite wary about cementing yet another wage scale at the bottom of the system while it's trying to fight a bigger battle at the top.
