1979 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL

Fire Engine Red on Black Leather

Hello all, and welcome to my auction.  Today I have a really nice and well preserved 1979 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL.  This is the convertible model and comes with both the hard and soft tops.  This is a really striking color combination for Mercedes.  The red is very vibrant and looks fantastic against the black of the leather interior.  The paint is good with very few chips or marks.  It is a re-spray but I would consider it to be above average work.  There are no waves or areas of filler that I can detect.

The chrome bumpers are straight as is the chrome on the other areas of the Mercedes.  The windshield is in good condition with no pitting or cracking.  The soft-top is in good condition too.  I doubt it was ever used much.  It took two of us to stretch in into place after being folded in the boot for who knows how long.  The plastic rear windows are still soft and pliable with no hazy or milky discoloration and the canvas fabric show very little wear.  The edges of the top were still rolled up a bit for the photos, but I am confident they will relax with an afternoon in the sun.

The factory alloys are nice and the tires are above 80% tread.  This Mercedes is a US Spec vehicle but the lights were upgraded to the European Style headlight lenses.  I really like the look and think it really sets this car apart from the pack.

The interior is very nice and clean too.  The seats are soft and the leather is issue free.  The actually look new to me.  My guess is they were re-upholstered in the last few years.  They are very close to mint condition.  The carpet, while original is very nice too.  No matting or wearing or problems whatsoever.  The dash is nice too.  It has a cloth cover over it for protection. Other than the Velcro tabs used to hold the cover in place, it is clean and crack free.

All of the gages work properly as do the lights and blinkers and wipers.  I take that back..  I did notice that the light inside the glovebox was kinda hanging there and may need to be fiddled with..  Other than that though it’s all good electrically.  The A/C is not blowing cold for one reason or another..  All of the equipment is there and the belt too so hopefully it’s not too sinister.

The Mercedes runs and drives great.  It starts up easily with no hesitation and does not smoke at all.  It does not drip or leak oil either.  On inspection of the underside I did notice that the transmission pan was moist but not dripping.  It may be in need of a gasket.  The rear end "pumpkin" has lots of grease and old grime on it too but is not dripping either.  The engine has excellent power and the transmission shits properly between all of the gears.  The SL drives straight down the road with no pulling or wandering.  The wheels don’t vibrate at speed and there is no play in the wheel.  The brakes stop straight and true and the pedal is solid underfoot.

This is a really nice Mercedes considering its age.  It is almost 35 years old!  It’s nice, but it’s not perfect.  I can describe it to the finest detail if you want to call me..  I just can’t write it all in an ad.  Please ask questions if you have them I don’t want there to be any differences between the car and your expectations.  I looked hard and could not find any rust anywhere.  The floors are solid and original.

This Mercedes-Benz has all of the vintage appeal and legendary reliability that collectors want and it is not going to break anybody’s pocketbook either.

I am setting the reserve very low and I know the SL will sell the first go around as long as we all play by these rules.

#1.  Only bid if you have intentions to buy.

#2. Ask any and all questions before bidding.

#3. Please contact me BEFORE BIDDING if you have zero or negative feedback.

#4. This is an AS-IS sale.  I have done my best to describe it exactly as I see it but it has no warranties or guarantees except a clean and clear legal title after payment.

#5. I will not accept Pay-Pal for the balance payment of the Mercedes.  Pay-Pal for deposit only,  the balance must be paid by certified check or wire.  Legitimate and legal buyers only please.

Just be real and genuine and I will make sure that the winning bidder is happy with his or her purchase.  I have 100% positive feedback and I plan on keeping that.  Also, I will end the sale for the right offer so don’t wait till the last second and worry about missing out.  Just call me and we will work out a fair price..

2016 British Grand Prix kept mostly calm and carried on

Mon, Jul 11 2016

Three bursts of chaos decided the course of the British Grand Prix. The first was a literal cloudburst a dozen minutes before the race, which poured water on the Silverstone Circuit while drivers sat on the grid. Six minutes before the lights-out, the race director decided to start the race behind the Safety Car. The field loped around the wet track for five laps. When the Safety Car pulled off, the three leaders – Mercedes-AMG Petronas' Lewis Hamilton, followed by teammate Nico Rosberg and Red Bull's Max Verstappen – stayed out. Behind them, the second chaotic moment occurred: a big group of drivers made pit stops for intermediate tires. When Manor's Pascal Wehrlein spun at Turn 1 on Lap 7, officials issued a Virtual Safety Car. With the rest of the field slowed down, the three leaders ducked into the pits on Lap 8 for intermediates. The fortuitous timing meant all three drivers rejoined the track in their original positions. By Lap 9, with racing resumed, Hamilton had a 4.9-second lead on Rosberg. From that point, even as the track dried, no one bothered Hamilton during what one commentator called "a measured drive." The Brit won his home grand prix, taking the checkered flag seven seconds ahead of Rosberg. Rosberg had to earn second place on track. The German's car didn't respond well to the intermediate tires, so Verstappen excecuted an outstanding pass on Rosberg on the outside through Chapel on Lap 16. After everyone switched to slicks, Rosberg's Mercedes reclaimed its mojo and the German hunted Verstappen down, passing the Dutchman on Lap 38. The final touch of chaos happened when Rosberg's gearbox threw a tantrum on Lap 47 of the 52-lap race. Rosberg radioed his engineer, "Gearbox problem!" His engineer replied, "Affirm. Chassis default zero one. Avoid seventh gear, Nico." The race stewards allowed the engineer's first two statements, but stewards said the instruction about seventh gear contravened the rule that "the driver must drive the car alone and unaided." After the race, officials added ten seconds to Rosberg's time, demoting him to third behind Verstappen. Rosberg's is the first penalty arising from radio communication restrictions. Unsurprisingly, Mercedes will appeal. At this year's Baku race the radio controversy stemmed from engineers refusing to tell drivers what to do. Now we know what happens when the pit wall gets loose lips.

Smart brand might be doomed

Thu, Oct 25 2018

Reports are painting a less than rosy picture of the Smart brand's future. The Daimler-owned carmaker is going fully electric in 2020, but that might not be enough to keep it alive for long. Inside sources, quoted by Automobile Magazine, are saying Renault is likely to pull out of the partnership that created the current Smart ForTwo/Renault Twingo pairing introduced in 2014. The two rear-engined cars share a platform, and when the current Twingo is done for, Renault might want to part ways. In addition, Mercedes isn't willing to prop up Smart on its own, and there is a possibility that the entire Smart brand could be shuttered by 2026. A previous joint venture was the ForFour hatch co-developed with Mitsubishi, and despite the ForFour name living on in the current generation rear-engined car, the earlier FWD hatchback has quickly been forgotten. Not long ago, Smart presented its Forease open-top concept to give customers a glimpse of what future Smart cars would look like, but at its heart the Forease was still a current Smart dressed up with concept car details. The next-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class is to be signed off in 2021 for a 2025 introduction, and it can be underpinned by a more flexible, fully scalable platform that could also serve to support a new entry-level Mercedes-Benz vehicle that could render the separate Smart brand pointless. Then there's Geely, who now owns nearly 10 percent of Daimler, and who is partnering with Daimler to launch a new "premium" ride-hailing venture in China. As Geely develops its mobility solutions, it is likely to keep an eye on Smart: Smart cars have been car-sharing staples around the world for quite a while, from users such as Car2Go. Automobile Magazine says that if a Smart is co-developed with Geely, it might suit the Chinese market well, but a global business case might be challenging. In any case, if Smart wants to survive beyond the current Renault partnership, the new model should be agreed upon quickly, and it must be based on a platform flexible enough to support full electric drive. Reportedly, there are now ongoing feasibility studies for a fully electric Daimler "U-Class," which would include a Smart-like three or five-door hatch with two wheelbase options, a ride-sharing shuttle with autonomous capabilities, and an urban delivery panel van. But Smart must justify itself for the upcoming decades, or the future Daimler products that occupy its niche will be wearing a three-pointed star instead.

YouTube's Super Bowl commercial buzz list dominated by automakers [w/videos]

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

After Sunday's big game, YouTube will be the place to watch every commercial that you missed when you left your seat for an emergency guac refill or, as we say in Cleveland, took the Browns to the Super Bowl. That makes YouTube the nation's water cooler on Monday, and it's got some preliminary stats to share in the lead up to kickoff.
As you know, Super Bowl advertisers, particularly automakers, like to endlessly tease their big budget commercials in the weeks before the game, many times revealing them outright days in advance. Because of this, YouTube can tell us which commercials have been viewed the most so far, and their top five list is all automakers.
Kaley Cuoco appears to have been a good investment for Toyota, as her ad for the RAV4 has garnered the most YouTube views - six million and counting - among Super Bowl commercials so far. Second place goes to Mercedes-Benz, though not its actual Super Bowl commercial, but rather the teaser for it. You know, the one with Kate Upton and the car washing, which is up to 5.6 million views. Third place is Audi's Prom commercial (3.3M views), fourth goes to Volkswagen's slightly controversial Get In, Get Happy ad (3.3M views), and the fifth and final spot is bookended by the teaser video for Kaley Cuoco's commercial (3.2M views). You can watch all five in order below.
