I am offering my unrestored and original but repainted 1970 Mercedes Benz 280SL There has been no crash damage or rust repair.
The paintwork is excellent. It was repainted professionally approximately 25 years ago. Evidently there was paint
failure with crazing. It was painted the original color...olive. The paint is nice but could use a good buff. The
hardtop was also repainted the original white/grey. The brightwork on the leading edge of the top has some fine
scratches. The interior of the top has some staining but no rips or tears. The panel gaps are excellent and
consistent with the factory standards. The panels are straight and flat. The original factory swages are present.
The top portion of the passenger plastic headlight lens is broken and is in the glove box. It is hard to notice.
There are no significant scratches. The olive green soft top is original and will require replacement. It has
several small tears. It is dry and fragile. The frame is straight and clean. When the car was shipped from
California several years ago, the driver damaged the rear frame rails. Hooks were placed in the factory frame holes
and the metal was torn as seen in the photos. This is a frustrating cosmetic problem that is of no structural
concern. The tires have good tread but they are old and should be replaced. The trunk is clean has areas on each
side of the floor that does have some superficial scale as seen in the photos.
Drivetrain
The engine is original and runs well. When purchased, the oil was changed and it was tuned. A new stainless steel
exhaust from Timevalve in Florida was fitted. I had a third generation Mercedes mechanic look it over. The valves
were adjusted, timing checked and it was aligned. Compression ...#1 165, #2 192, #3 175, #4 170, #5 190, #6
187. He gave the car high marks. He suggested new motor mounts and replacement of a cold start valve. These repairs
have not been done. It has an new fuel pump. Other repairs include...new control arm bushings, air intake hose,
fuel injection thermostat, hoses, brakes flushed and replaced with Ate fluid, tie rods, steering damper, air
filter, belts, cooling system flushed, and transmission serviced. The AC has been converted to R134A. The air
conditioning is not adequate and I’m having it checked again this week. The compressor does engage. There is a
small exhaust leak at one of the joints that will also be repaired this week. The transmission shifts without
problem but not like a modern car. The shifter bushings have been replaced so it is crisp.
Interior
The interior is parchment, clean, and original. It had sheepskins from the beginning. The MB Tex (not leather) is
supple. The seats look good but it appears that some color has thinned. There is a very small tear on the driver
back rest. The door panels are nice with no tears. The wood is excellent. The carpets are nice and original. The
heater/air control levers have been replaced which was an effort. They work well. An aftermarket Panasonic stereo
has been added and speakers have been placed in the rear deck area. Recently the clock stopped working (last week).
I imagine it is a connection/ground problem.
General
This is an a very nice example of an unrestored 280SL. The color combination is stunning. It is reliable and drives
nicely. For a 45 year old unrestored car, it is in remarkable condition. I have the original pink build sheet.

Red Bull may seek engines from Ferrari after Mercedes snub
Thu, Sep 10 2015Red Bull and Renault's fractured relationship is pushing the Austrian F1 team to find a new engine provider. But after a trip across the German border to chat with Mercedes-Benz proved fruitless, the team is apparently set to head across its home country's southern border, and into Italy. Yep, Red Bull Ferrari could be a thing next season. According to RBR boss Christian Horner, the company is just doing "necessary due diligence" in contacting other engine suppliers, although he's willfully admitted to Germany's Bild newspaper that the "idea of Mercedes is finished," BBC Sport reports. It wasn't so much that Mercedes and Red Bull couldn't come to financial agreement – Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz views throwing money into F1 in much the same way you or I toss pennies into the mall fountain – but rather that the Germans had no interest in supplying the best engines on the grid to the factory team's perennial rival. BBC Sport seems to think that fact, along with what the outlet calls Red Bull's "antagonistic" relationship with engine suppliers, killed the Mercedes deal. Honda and RBR aren't likely to happen either, thanks to McLaren (not that we think Red Bull would approach the Japanese, which have struggled mightily all season long). By process of elimination, that just leaves Ferrari. Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene confirmed that his team can accommodate Red Bull's engine needs, and that he wasn't concerned with the idea of a Ferrari engine in an Adrian Newey-designed body. "In theory they have big names, with Newey as chief designer and it is easy to think that if you give them the engine they will build a scary chassis, which means they will be really competitive," Arrivabene told BBC Sport. "Concerning my team, my engineers and aerodynamicists know their own jobs. For that reason I don't have a problem, and competition is nice when you have a stronger competitor." "This doesn't mean tomorrow morning we will give our engines to Red Bull or Toro Rosso," Arrivabene added. And it's that statement we'd suggest remembering. There are, after all, still seven races left in the 2015 season, which is quite a lot of time for new and different developments within the sport's notoriously gruesome political process. In other words, don't count on an announcement from any team or manufacturer for at least a few more races. Related Video:
2015 Spanish F1 Grand Prix makes its Deutsche mark
Mon, May 11 2015The first race of the European Formula One season inaugurates the second phase of the Championship. Teams overhaul their cars with the big updates they've been working on since Australia, and at the end of The Battle of Spain we find out how the positions on the field have changed. Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver Nico Rosberg brought a big update to his psychology, straight-up beating teammate Lewis Hamilton to take his first pole position of the season. Mercedes owns the front row and Ferrari maintains its status as primary challenger, Sebastian Vettel lining up in third. Williams proved it's been hitting the books to do better in class, though, Valtteri Bottas slotting into fourth. And Toro Rosso's visit to a track that rewards strong aero rewarded them with the best team grid position since the Italian Grand Prix in 2008: Carlos Sainz secured fifth, ahead of Max Verstappen in sixth. Kimi Raikkonen's bout of Saturday woes – it seems the Finn is always handicapped by lots of tiny issues – continued in Barcelona with one of his sets of prime tires getting cooked by malfunctioning tire warmers. He recovered well enough to take seventh on the grid, but he's got some strong competition ahead of him. He led three other drivers in the Continuous Issues department, Daniil Kvyat unable to wrestle his Infiniti Red Bull Racing higher than eighth, Williams driver Felipe Massa getting it wrong in Turn 3 to fall five places behind his teammate Bottas, and Daniel Ricciardo in the second Red Bull enduring another engine change and sloppy car behavior to get tenth. And while it turned out to be a steady race a little rough around the edges, the positions on the battlefield just might have changed. A little. Of the 66 laps in the race we might have seen Rosberg for three of them – maybe. The German got a smashing start, had a clear lead into Turn 1, and after that we checked in occasionally during his two pit stops and again at the checkered flag. He owned the entire weekend the way we're used to seeing his teammate do, and the cameras left him alone to run his race. No one got within seven seconds of him during the first third, and as the pit stop strategies played out that cushion grew. He finished seventeen seconds ahead of Hamilton, and 45 seconds ahead of third-placed Vettel. Hamilton, on the back foot all three days, stumbled out of the gate.
Weekly Recap: Toyota propels hydrogen fuel cells
Sat, Jan 10 2015Toyota is serious about hydrogen fuel cells, and it wants the auto industry to follow suit. The Japanese automaker said this week it's releasing 5,680 fuel cell patents from around the world, including technologies used on its upcoming sedan, the 2016 Mirai. The move is unusual, but not unprecedented, as Tesla similarly released its electric vehicle patents last year. The idea for Tesla, and now for Toyota, is to spur development of alternative propulsion. "By eliminating traditional corporate boundaries, we can speed the development of new technologies and move into the future of mobility more quickly, effectively and economically," said Bob Carter, Toyota Motor Sales senior vice president of automotive operations, in a statement. Toyota's fuel cell patents will be free to use through 2020, though patents related to producing and selling hydrogen will remain open forever. Toyota said it would like companies that use its patents to share their own hydrogen patents, but won't require it. "What Toyota's doing is really a logical move, and really a good move for the industry," Devin Lindsay, principal powertrain analyst with IHS Automotive, told Autoblog. The announcement was made at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It comes as Toyota prepares to launch the hydrogen-powered Mirai in a limited number late this year in California. The launch will be extended to the Northeastern United States next year. Toyota also has announced plans to support networks of fueling stations in each region to try to smooth consumer adoption. The Mirai has a 300-mile range on a tank of hydrogen, and it takes about five minutes to refill. Fuel cells have been receiving increased attention recently, and Audi and Volkswagen debuted hydrogen-powered cars at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Honda, another proponent of the technology, also showed its updated FCV concept in November in Japan. The company, however, has delayed its fuel cell sedan a year until 2016. Like Toyota, Honda says its hydrogen-powered car will have a range of 300 miles or more. Meanwhile, Hyundai currently offers leases for fuel-cell powered Tucsons, which have a 265-mile range, in Southern California. Despite the optimism some automakers have for fuel cells, the technology still faces barriers. A lack of filling stations has long held it back, and many consumers are not familiar with the potential benefits.
