1968 Mercedes Benz 250sl - Very Original, Rust-free, Documented California W113 on 2040-cars
Santa Barbara, California, United States
Offered for sale is a beautiful 1968 Mercedes 250SL finished in beautiful Horizon Blue (DB 304) and retaining its original, rust-free undercarriage, original, rust-free body (including factory spot-welded fenders), original, numbers matching engine and transmission and original stamped service booklet and owners manual. A local car from new, it was ordered by Mrs. R. Whitmarsh of Montecito, CA, and delivered by Butts Motors, the Mercedes distributor here in Santa Barbara at the time. The car was driven by its first owner until 1974, at which point she gifted it to her daughter and son-in-law, prompting a relocation to La Jolla, CA. The second owners used the car primarily as a weekend driver, keeping it until 1990, at which point it was sold to an acquaintance in Colorado. The third owner furthered the careful stewardship of the prior owners, using it sparingly, always keeping it garaged and properly maintained and never subjecting it to any weather or elements. Consequently, the car remains extremely original, with a strong, numbers matching engine, smooth transmission, charmingly patinated aesthetic condition, and (I can't stress this enough) the car retains its completely original, rust-free undercarriage and completely original, rust and bondo free body, including the original fenders which still have their telltale spot welds in the engine compartment. The
exterior is in great shape, the factory correct Horizon Blue finish marred only by minor
imperfections accrued over the years, none of which are significant enough to appear
in any of the pictures or detract from the car’s considerable appeal. The body is
straight and free of any accident damage and it retains even, factory correct panel
fits and gaps throughout. All of the chrome, glass and rubber are in good original
condition, and the original color-matched, hub-capped wheels have their chrome
beauty rings and are wrapped in tires with plenty of remaining tread. The car
comes with both its hard and soft tops, the hard-top completely original and hardly ever used and the soft top showing minimal wear with a
replaced clear rear window. The car’s original Medium Blue MB-Tex
interior is equally as clean, the seats, interior panels and carpets showing
only minimal wear considering their 46 years of service. The car retains its original Becker radio,
dealer installed Kuhlmeister Air Conditioning system, as well as its rare,
optional “kinder seat”. The
car’s odometer shows 01,773 and everything – including the original stamped
service booklet – indicates that the car has travelled only 101k miles from
new. This is bolstered by the car’s excellent mechanical state, the original
engine starting without any hesitation, idling consistently and pulling
strongly and smoothly through all of the gears. Compression is excellent,
providing even and ample power, and the brakes and suspension all function
exactly as they should. The car’s a joy to drive, whether tooling through town with the top
down, winding through the back roads or cruising down the highway. The car’s
undercarriage is entirely original and rust-free – this car has never had any
accidents, rust or rust repair – it’s as clean and factory stock underneath as
you’ll find on a W113 Pagoda SL. The 250SL was an improvement to its 230SL predecessor and certainly the rarest of the Pagodas, making up less than 11% of the W113 production run. If you’re looking for an abundantly presentable, entirely solid and mechanically strong examples that is sure to appreciate and offer years of trustworthy and pleasurable service, this car deserves your serious consideration. It checks all the important boxes: gorgeous cosmetics with its original color combination, smooth running original engine and a rust-free original body and undercarriage. Please bid accordingly. We want this
car to go to great home and would be happy to further discuss it and answer any
questions, so please feel free to email us or call us at 805-202-4557.

Reed Motorcars We’ve always
had an appreciation for classic European cars and over the years have created
an eclectic personal collection. We only buy cars that we’d personally be
interested in owning and generally only sell them to make room for other
acquisitions. That time has come for this Mercedes (if the price is right, of
course – this isn’t a fire sale). We try to give accurate descriptions of the
cars we’re selling, but we’re enthusiasts, not experts, and we encourage and
are happy to help facilitate personal or professional inspections. But please
do so before bidding, as the alternative harms our ability to make sales to
other interested parties who have done their proper due diligence before
bidding. For U.S. buyers a
10% non-refundable deposit is required within 3 days of the auction’s end, the
balance to be paid within 7 days of the auction’s end. Foreign buyers must pay
in full within 7 business days of the auction’s end. Buyer is responsible for
shipping, however we’d be more that happy to help with recommendations and
arrangements. The car is listed locally and we reserve the right to end the
auction at any time should it sell prior to auction’s end. Thanks for your
interest. |

Hollywood stars drink hydrogen B-Class F-Cell emission water in Death Valley [UPDATE]
Tue, Feb 4 2014A plug-in electric vehicle can be used to power a house during a winter storm, but if you're more worried about the heat of, say, Death Valley, then maybe you'll want a Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell along. That's the message of a new video from Daimler and starring Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds) and Joshua Jackson (Fringe) that promotes the company's hydrogen-powered car. The gist? You can drink the tailpipe emissions. The two Hollywood stars drove in Death Vally without any water in their F-Cell but had a special tank hooked up to the tailpipe to collect the H2O drips as they drove in 100+ degree temperatures. There's a reason these two actors were chosen, since they've been driving an F-Cell in their daily lives for two years, according to the Diamler press release. The text is, shall we say, a bit hyperbolic - "Their lives rely on the emissions of the B-Class F-CELL" it says, totally ignoring the film crew that is obviously along for the ride and more than likely had a few bottles with them. Also, when the California Fuel Cell Partnership promoted the same idea a few years ago, it clarified that, "A fuel cell doesn't produce enough water to fill your glass. ... If fact, fuel cells produce about the same amount of water as gasoline vehicle – about 1/3 cup for a full day of driving." Thus, this whole thing is a Hollywood stunt, but it's a visually effective one. See for yourself in the mini-movie below. UPDATE: Daimler has told AutoblogGreen that there was no "extra Hollywood magic" needed for the water collected in the video. Instead, Madeleine Herdlitschka, who works at global communications for Mercedes-Benz Cars, said, "Considering the technical characteristics, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL emits about 9 kg of water vapor per kg of hydrogen while driving. The vehicle has a hydrogen capacity of about 3.7 kg, what is sufficient for a max. of about 400 km of range. A tailor-made construction, designed by the production company Markenfilm Crossing in cooperation with our fuel cell experts, made it possible to collect the water in a tank - previously cooling the vapor with a specially designed pipe system." Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury fully revealed, tea set and all
Tue, Apr 24 2018Mercedes has officially unveiled its Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept following a leak of most of the details last week. As we learned last week, the unusual looking sedan-SUV crossbreed is fully electric with four motors producing a whopping 750 horsepower. Combined with an 80 kWh battery, Mercedes estimates it should have a range of over 200 miles on the European test cycle. It also can handle extremely fast charging from DC chargers outputting 350 kW. Mercedes claims this allows it to gain 60 miles of range in 5 minutes. But there are a number of interesting details that weren't leaked. Many of them have to do with the car's Chinese inspiration, which is perhaps not that surprising for a car that makes its debut in China. The body style is the first influence, which Mercedes says combines the sedan and SUV, the best-selling car classes in the country. On the inside, there are a pair of cues inspired by China. The first is the ebony wood trim that Mercedes calls "Magic Wood." The company says it's very similar to that used in Chinese furniture. In the back, between the two highly adjustable white leather seats with rose-gold stitching, is a complete tea set. And not only does it contain all the containers for tea, but it actually has a variety of teas on offer. They're there to be used in conjunction with the car's relaxation modes that combine lighting, music and scents to set the mood. It's hard to say whether this concept will spawn a production model, since the body style is unlike any currently offered by Mercedes-Benz. But with the crossover SUV market staying hot, and competitors such as Audi and BMW bringing out extra-large SUVs, we wouldn't be surprised if Mercedes eventually offers at least a Maybach-level version of its GLS-Class, if not its own model. Geely chairman is now the single biggest investor in Daimler
Fri, Feb 23 2018Li Shufu, the chairman and main owner of Chinese carmaker Geely, has built a stake of 9.69 percent in Daimler AG, the German carmaker said in a regulatory filing on Friday. The stake, worth nearly $9 billion at the current valuation for Daimler shares, makes Li the biggest single shareholder in the maker of Mercedes-Benz cars, trucks and vans headquartered in the German city of Stuttgart. A Daimler spokesman called the stake purchase a private investment by Li. "We are delighted, with Li Shufu, to have won over another long-term investor who is convinced of Daimler's innovative prowess, strategy and future potential," the spokesman said in response to a request for comment. "Daimler knows and respects Li Shufu as a Chinese entrepreneur of particular competence and forward thinking." Li's stake purchase makes him the top shareholder in Daimler ahead of the Kuwait Investment Authority, which owned 6.8 percent as of Sept. 30, according to Thomson Reuters data. Earlier this month, the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag reported that the Chinese industry giant was seeking to become Daimler's biggest shareholder, likely exceeding the 6.8-percent stake of the Kuwait Investment Authority. The paper said Daimler had reportedly turned down Geely's $4.5 billion offer for a 5-percent stake via a discounted share placement, saying that Geely could buy shares in the open market. Institutional investors currently own 70.7 percent of Daimler, and the company already has strong ties to Chinese automakers BAIC and BYD. Bild am Sonntag said the move was intended as a strategic alliance against Apple, Google and Amazon on autonomous and connected cars. And Reuters reported that Daimler wants to have bespoke "robo taxis" on the road quicker than Google's Waymo, and views Geely as a strong partner for that. Geely conversely is interested in Daimler's electric car battery technology, and sources quoted by the German paper say there are plans to establish joint electric car manufacturing in Wuhan, China, to meet China's smog-reducing quotas. Geely is developing the Lynk & Co. brand of electric and hybrid cars. Geely owns Volvo, which has enjoyed a renaissance under the arrangement, as well as the maker of London's black cabs. In December, it bought a stake in AB Volvo, the maker of Volvo trucks.
