1967 MERCEDES BENZ 230SL - $65,000+ invested (please read entire description and see all photos - thanks for your interest and good luck!)

I have owned this car for ten years, purchased from previous owner in Tahoe, CA in 2004, always a clean and dry car owned throughout it's known history by enthusiasts who have been willing and able to do the proper care and stewardship of the car. The car has been extensively restored under my ownership between the years 2004 to 2010. I will let the pictures best describe the cosmetic/paint restoration and present condition of this W113. Extensive mechanical restoration was done by Dan Caron, President of SL Barn - someone who is an expert on 190SL and W113 (230SL, 280SL) and is an invaluable resource for W113 owners. He completely rebuilt and detailed the engine, Bosch mechanical fuel injection, fuel pump, the manual transmission, new clutch, pressure plate, new master and slave cylinders and associated systems. Restored dashboard including gauges and light bulbs and dash trim. Brake lines serviced and new brake master cylinder. GAHH German canvas soft top installed and in great shape and is of original quality. Wood is new (Heritage Restorations) with the original walnut trim and of original quality. The indicators and turn signals and windscreen wipers function perfectly. Engine runs strong and true and gears shift easily. I love to drive this car! I live a very busy life and have realized that I don't have enough time to drive the car as much as it deserves (only 1200 miles during the past twelve months).  I am therefore selling this car because I feel that it should be enjoyed by someone who can spend time driving it daily - these cars are built solidly like tanks and maintain their systems in good repair best when regularly driven.

You will notice that the car has the original 230SL radio delete plate on the dashboard, and that is in fact how the car was delivered originally. There is an antenna installed on the fender should an owner wish to install a radio. I like the sound of the engine and the look of the 230SL on the dashplate, so I never did. Also, there is the original wheel block and jack installed in place in holders under the spare wheel, which holds the tool kit inside of the wheel cover.

Here is excerpt of Mr. Caron's report to me (3/10) after work completed (2008-2010):
------------------
I have inspected this vehicle in all aspects and know this car very well.

During and extensive restoration we did the following:
Engine rebuild
Transmission rebuild
Paint engine bay
Clean and detail engine parts
Complete interior upholstery of dash panels
Install soft top material
Test drive and prepare vehicle for road use

This car is virtually rust free. All floor pans and frame rails show no signs of
corrosion or of previous repair and are believed to be original. This
vehicle appears to be accident free. The body panels are free of dents, rust
or scratches and the paint has a nice shine in all areas.

All of the lights, both interior and exterior, work as they should and all
gages are functioning as required.

The engine was rebuilt using all new parts and is in perfect running
condition. This included pistons, bearings, oil pump, timing chain, valve
seats, valves and all new gaskets. The machining work was done by a highly
respected expert regarding vintage engines. All the engine parts were
cleaned and painted or anodized as per original. All engine assembly was
done at SL Barn either by me or under my close supervision. The careful
break-in was done entirely by myself and I've logged over 1,500 miles of test
driving with no incidents or problems.

The fuel injection pump was also rebuilt and new fuel injectors were
installed. All aspects of the fuel injection system were replaced or rebuilt
as required for optimal running.

The transmission is a fully synchronized four speed gear box which was also
rebuilt. We used all new bearings and seals throughout the box and it
operates quietly and shifts effortlessly. We also installed a new clutch and
pressure plate as well as a new master and slave cylinder.

The tires and running gear are in good condition and the car is free of
vibrations, rattles or squeaks. The brakes were inspected as well as the
exhaust system and all are in good condition. The hand brake operates
properly and releases fully.

The trunk is clean with original rubber floor mat. The spare tire is correct
and has the original tire cover as well as the original tool kit installed.
The tail lights are the original all red units. The chrome around the
outside of the tail lights shows some pitting which is consistent with the
age of the car.

Driving impressions:
The engine starts easily and comes to a fast idle as required. As the engine
warms the idle speed lowers and comes to a steady idle. The engine runs
smoothly and has no leaks or unusual noises. The engine bay is nicely
detailed and correct for this year of car. All components show well.
The clutch works smoothly without and jerking upon release. The transmission
shifts smoothly from one gear to the next, either up or down shifting. The
steering runs straight and true without any wandering to either side. The
brakes pull the car down quickly without fading or pulling to either side.
The power steering is smooth and operates quietly.

All gages read normally while driving at full oil pressure and 180 degrees F
on the temperature gage. Signals work properly, high beam and fuel gage
works as required. Speedometer, odometer and tachometer all function
normally. Heater levers are free and the heater blower motor is working. The
heater gives adequate heat and shuts off fully for summer driving.
All in all, a very pleasant car to drive.
--------

Few things are needed to do on this car, but no fifty year old sportscar is perfect. Among these include: there's a small paint chip on the opening edge of the driver doorjamb (it's hardly noticable except by me because I remember exactly when I opened the door against a small table, easy fix), I would replace the headliner of the hardtop (I painted the hardtop and it looks great but I never use it and didn't get to the headliner), the original chrome rearview mirror needs tightened up where it swivels on the stalk (it moves too loose recently, easy fix), maybe rechrome at least two of the wheel trim rings at some point, always considered removing the leather wrap from the steering wheel and polishing it back to shiny, an easy thing to do.

The car and hardtop (stand included with sale) is stored indoors and covered with a car cover on the coast of Virginia.

Car sells with clear title and bill of sale to winning bidder and full payment in proper and guaranteed transfer of US funds, in the usual and legal manner. I am willing to help with meeting your shipment company and assist on this end. I can also suggest an excellent shipper who as an excellent reputation who I have used for several cross-country transports of expensive antique cars over the years.  The president of the company has a pagoda SL and he knows this vehicle well, if you need a recommendation.

Mercedes-Maybach GLS could become the most expensive car made in America

Mon, Mar 18 2019

Mercedes-Benz International, the German automaker's manufacturing facility near Vance and Tuscaloosa, Ala., already builds the GLS SUV. Autonews reports that the coming ultra-luxe version of the large crossover, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, will be built in Alabama as well for global markets. The most recent timelines mark the reveal in production or near-production form in China, with sales to commence next year. The next-gen series-production GLS goes on sale later this year. The gilded sub-brand previewed a wild concept last year in China called the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury, which blended the tall profile of an SUV with the truck of a sedan on donk wheels. Based on spy shots, none of that fancy will make it to production. Both the Maybach and AMG versions of the GLS ride on fat rubber but look thoroughly traditional. The treasure will be inside. Autonews said China accounts for roughly 75 percent of Maybach S-Class sedan sales. That suggests the GLS in baroque trim will emphasize chauffeured luxury touches like rear captain's chairs and lots of rear legroom. Pricing estimates figure $200,000 to get in the door. That would put the SUV right in line with the Lamborghini Urus and a couple stacks of Benjamins above the Bentley Bentayga, with much the same likely audience. One analyst said, "The ultra-high-net-worth kids want something different, and these ultraluxury SUVs certainly fit that," while another opined on its "appeal to the Kardashians and hip-hoppers, if they want something slightly different to the G-Wagen." A $200K MSRP would also comfortably make the Maybach GLS the most expensive new car built in America, taking the title from the Acura NSX. With a great price comes great power, said to be a twin-turbo V8 with more than 560 horsepower. The coming GLS 450 will make do with somewhere around 360 hp. The Alabama plant, which also builds the GLE, GLE Coupe, and C-Class, is also undergoing a $1 billion upgrade to more than double the size of the facility, making lines for battery production and EQ-series vehicle assembly,

The hottest modern sports cars rendered as rally racers

Thu, Jan 14 2016

The modern-day World Rally Championship a monumental amount of fun to watch – I should know, as I recently was lucky enough to head to the UK to watch WRC Wales Rally GB – but even the most monstrous of the current WRC cars are based on fairly pedestrian European hatchbacks. Back in the heyday of rally, the Group B era in the 1980s, much hotter cars were the basis of even more incredible competition machines, for the most part. Take the exotic Ford RS200, or the Lancia Delta S4 with its twin-charged engine. And the hatchback-based Group B cars were bonkers, too. So what would some of our favorite modern cars look like if Group B had never ended? A British site named CarWow hired an artist to reimagine everything from the Rolls-Royce Wraith to the Porsche 911 as a retro-inspired rally car, and they were kind enough to let us share the results in the gallery above. The gallery features an Alfa Romeo Giulia in Martini livery, an Audi TT in classic Ur-Quattro colors, a Fiat 500 Abarth sporting massive flares and a hood blister full of auxiliary lights, a new Ford Mustang in RS200 livery, a Lancia Delta in Alitalia colors, a Porsche 911 in Rothmans livery, a Renault-Alpine in classic blue, a Rolls-Royce Wraith tribute to the Jules cologne Corniche Coupe, and a relatively modern-looking VW Touran. So far, the favorite around the office is the incredible Mercedes-Benz S-Class that is an homage to the wonderful 300 SEL 6.8 AMG "Red Pig" that essentially put AMG on the map. Check out the gallery above and see which one you like the best. Related Video:

Race Recap: 2016 Austrian GP is mishaps from start to finish

Tue, Jul 5 2016

At the 2015 US Formula 1 Grand Prix, rain mixed up the grid and a first-lap incident cast the die for the race. The Austin, Texas event made highlight reels for those reasons and because it decided the Driver's Championship. At the 2016 Austrian F1 Grand Prix, rain mixed up the grid and a last-lap incident cast the die for the race. The Spielbergring race will feature in this year's highlight reel because it might force Mercedes-AMG Petronas to make some hard decisions about the rest of the season. For the first time this season, Lewis Hamilton converted pole position into a lead through Turn 1, and began slowly pulling away from the field. Teammate Nico Rosberg started from sixth because of a gearbox penalty, but was up to third when he pitted on Lap 11. Mercedes normally pits the lead driver first, in this case being Hamilton, but Mercedes wanted to get Rosberg ahead of the two Ferraris. Hamilton pitted on Lap 22, emerging behind Rosberg because of a slow stop. Sebastian Vettel led the race for Ferrari on Lap 27 when his right rear tire exploded coming down the start-finish straight – an eerie reminder of the 2015 Belgian Grand Prix. The Safety Car rolled out, yet when racing resumed Rosberg stayed ahead. After the two Mercs came in for second stops everyone expected Hamilton to lead, but Hamilton had messed up his in-lap and lost a cumulative 3.3 seconds during his actual stops compared to Rosberg's pit-stop times. The Brit remained second. Hamilton chased his teammate for the final 15 laps. At the beginning of the last lap Rosberg messed up Turn 1 and Hamilton closed in. Rosberg took the inside line into Turn 2 as Hamilton pulled up on the outside, then Rosberg appeared to drive straight on as if he simply wasn't going to turn. Hamilton turned in, colliding with Rosberg and driving over the German's front wing. By the end of Turn 2, Hamilton had the lead and Rosberg had a broken car. The Brit won, the German puttered home to finish fourth. The incident promoted Max Verstappen to second and Kimi Raikkonen to third. Verstappen scored his second podium for Red Bull after his victory in Spain. Conversely, Raikkonen's third place for Ferrari was more gifted scraps for the scuderia. Daniel Ricciardo came fifth in the second Red Bull, Jenson Button delivered a terrific sixth for McLaren- Honda, Romain Grosjean got Haas back in the points, Carlos Sainz, Jr. secured eighth for Toro Rosso, and Valtteri Bottas in ninth for Williams.
