The
2007 Mercedes-Benz R-Class combines the comforts of a luxury sedan with most of
the space and versatility of a minivan or an SUV. While not as tall as the last
two, it boasts more height than a sedan for excellent headroom. Legroom is also
first class, and there is true space for six full-size adults in three two-seat
rows. If the R350 is closest in concept to a tall luxury wagon, it doesn't fit
the profile of a wagon or any other existing automotive genre. So
what is the R-Class? Mercedes-Benz calls it a Grand Sports Tourer. If that
sounds more than vaguely like Chrysler's Pacifica Sports Tourer, the two
vehicles share no parts, and the R-Class is, well, more grand in design, social
standing, specification, and price. In
the United States, two models of the 2006 Mercedes-Benz R-Class are available:
the R350, powered by a 3.5-liter, 268-horsepower V-6, and the R500, with a
5.0-liter, 302-horsepower V-8. Both have permanent all-wheel drive, the
7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission, and the full array of
Mercedes-Benz safety features. Interior tech features are led by an
eight-speaker AM/FM /single-CD audio system with both MP3-CD capability and an
input jack for an auxiliary audio player as standard. Options include the
TeleAid telematics system, a GPS navigation system, a glove-box-mounted CD
changer, Sirius Satellite Radio, and the Mercedes-Benz telephone system. Our
2006 Mercedes-Benz R350 test vehicle came with most of the key comfort options
but few of the available entertainment packages. To the $48,000 base price and
the $775 destination charge, add $690 for Obsidian Black paint; $900 for
10-spoke 18-inch wheels; $530 for the wood-and-leather multifunction steering
wheel; $1,750 for the leather and burled-wood interior-trim upgrade; $50 for a
rear cargo cover; $1,190 for heated front- and second-row seats; and $1,400 for
the Airmatic air-suspension system. The $2,390 Panorama Roof package could be
considered comfort or entertainment, while the $1,190 Harman Kardon Logic 7
audio system provides great sound. The $58,865 bottom line is not cheap for a
Mercedes but will be hard to beat on a square-feet-per-dollar basis. Even the
S-Class seems small inside in comparison. The
2006 Mercedes-Benz R350's sleek and different looks draw attention. "What
is it?" is the most common onlooker comment. While the car's Mercedes-Benz
heritage is obviously defined by the tristar, the low Mercedes sport grille,
and lines that show similarity to several of the manufacturer's other current
products, defining exactly what it is can be tricky. The R350's two-box shape
is only superficially like a minivan's, proving lower and smaller on closer
inspection, as well as lacking sliding doors. It is larger, with a more
blended-in shape than that of an E-Class wagon, and it's definitely not an SUV. Our
advice is not to try to categorize the R350. If you need space in a luxury
vehicle, look here. All three seating rows are simultaneously usable by
six-foot-tall adults. The power-adjustable first row is similar in design and dimension
to that of the ML SUV--no complaints for space and comfort there--but the
second-row seats are the best in the house. Although manually adjustable, they
can be modified for fore-and-aft position and seat-back angle, and they give
the chauffeured passenger the feeling of traveling in an executive jet. Now

Mercedes testing C-Class plug-in hybrid modes in Germany
Wed, 07 May 2014Testing appears to be underway for what would be the first Mercedes-Benz C-Class with a hybrid powertrain. We can see a pair of the prototypes undergoing testing in Germany, with one, a C-Class Wagon, still heavily clad in camouflage and featuring a more noticeable outlet on the passenger side of its rear bumper.
There's also a more production-looking sedan, which features a not-so-discreet flap over its rear-bumper outlet. It's difficult to speculate on power outputs for this fuel-sipping C-Class, although our spies seem to think that this car will feature some combination of a four-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor, although just which four is unclear (note, we wouldn't mind if MB fit its 2.0-liter turbo with some batteries and motors). Regardless, the four-pot/electric motor seems like a pretty reasonable combo, although it probably means that Mercedes won't be challenging the six-cylinder-powered system of the BMW ActiveHybrid3 any time soon.
When the plug-in C-Class arrives later this year as a 2015 model, it will likely offer a full range of driving modes, including both gas or electric, only, as well as a more traditional hybrid mode.
2015 Malaysian F1 GP springs hot, humid surprises [spoilers]
Sun, Mar 29 2015In the two weeks since Australia both Mercedes and Ferrari spoke of the improved performance from their respective cars. In Malaysia, Ferrari showed it. Lewis Hamilton still put his Mercedes-AMG Petronas on pole position, but Sebastian Vettel got within two whiskers of the Brit, lining up second just 0.074 behind. Afterward, Vettel said Ferrari could win the race if everything went well. But in qualifying we didn't know how much of Ferrari's performance was truly down to the car and how much was down to the wet weather that struck near the beginning of Q2. The rain didn't hamper Nico Rosberg's run – the German said "I just didn't drive good enough" – and he took third spot in the second Mercedes-AMG Petronas. Showing what the Infiniti Red Bull Racing chassis can do when the power unit is working properly, teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat grabbed fourth and fifth. Whippersnapper Max Verstappen, in his second race, qualified in sixth with an excellent drive through the rain; just 0.030 behind Kvyat, he said he could have got fifth if he hadn't had a running problem with his brakes. Williams head of vehicle performance Rob Smedley said he wouldn't complain about Mercedes' advantage, but Felipe Massa has spent the whole season so far banging the alarm about Ferrari's pace. He says Williams has lost its straight-line advantage, part of the reason the first Grove car is back in seventh, while Valtteri Bottas is in eighth. Between them was Romain Grosjean in the Lotus, but he got dropped two positions for a pit-lane infraction in Q2, so he'll be tenth. Ahead of him is Marcus Ericsson in the Sauber, who would lead the charge to turn in another surprise for the Swiss team. But the real surprise came from the Scuderia Ferrari, who, on a bright, sunny day proved that they don't need to add water for race-winning pace. While Hamilton got made usual awesome start at the lights, Vettel channeled that other famous German Ferrari driver and immediately cut across the track to intimidate Rosberg, maintaining his second place position into the first turn. Arguably the race-winning move came three laps later at that same turn, when Ericsson plunged in too fast and swapped ends, beaching the rear of his Sauber in the gravel trap. The safety car came out when the recovery truck emerged to retrieve the Sauber, and nearly all of the front-runners took to the pits to swap out of the medium tires. Vettel, however, didn't.
Recharge Wrap-up: BMW i3 goes against Mercedes B-Class ED, Tesla good for business
Wed, Sep 17 2014Car and Driver has published a comparison test pitting the 2014 BMW i3 against the 2014 Mercedes-Benz B-class Electric Drive. The test not only measured the quality of the driving experience, but also all the quantitative details that are especially important when looking at electric vehicles. For instance, the Benz's real-world MPGe surpassed its own rating, but it still couldn't match the BMW. The B-Class, though, won in the range department. We won't spoil all the results, or Car and Driver's overall pick, but you can head over to the article to find out for yourself. Tesla's expanding business, including the Gigafactory being built in Reno, NV, is encouraging growth in the locales and associated businesses. Some of Tesla's suppliers are talking of relocation, wanting to be close to the action stirred up by the electric automaker's expansion. It makes good business sense to be in the same neighborhood as Tesla. "We can react quickly, and our engineers are constantly working with Tesla," says Futuris General Manager Sam Coughlin. Brookings Institute fellow Jennifer Vey says, "The land around Tesla is being redeveloped and reimagined. It's a mash-up of an anchor campus, startups, housing and transit, in a physically compact area where companies can cluster and connect." Read more at San Jose Mercury News. EVs are doing even more to reduce energy use clean up the air, according to new analysis from the Union of Concerned Scientists. According to findings, 60 percent of Americans now live in areas where EVs do more to reduce emissions than hybrids, up from 45 percent in 2012. Average electricity use is now 0.325 kWh per mile, down five percent from 2011. EV performance - in terms of mileage and emissions - is improving compared to traditional fuel vehicles, based on the sources of electricity in various regions. Read more from the Union of Concerned Scientists. Zipcar's carsharing network has launched in Paris. Zipcar is expanding across Europe, and has already established itself in Austria, Spain and the UK. According to Zipcar France's General Manager Etienne Hermite, "In a highly populated city, Zipcar's model has been proven to remove up to 15 personally owned vehicles from the road for each Zipcar in service, reducing parking demand, congestion and emissions." Zipcar European President Massimo Marsili hopes that most Parisians will eventually be just a short walk from a Zipcar.
