Mercedes C-Class Coupe to debut in Frankfurt
Wed, Mar 11 2015Mercedes-Benz is set to launch its new C-Class Coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall, according to Autocar. In addition to the standard C Coupe, the German automaker will also reportedly show a Mercedes-AMG C63 version, which AMG boss Tobias Moers says will be a "breakthrough" for the brand. Speaking to Autocar, Mercedes design chief Gorden Wagener promises the new C-Class Coupe will be "even better to drive than it looks," and says that the two-door will be sleeker and even more beautiful than the recently launched S-Class Coupe. Talk about a tall order. Specific design tweaks for the C Coupe will include revised front- and rear-end styling, while keeping the C's long hood and short rear deck to emphasize its rear-wheel-drive architecture. What's more, this revised design will need to be flexible, as Mercedes is planning a convertible version of its C-Class. Expect the interior design to carry over largely unchanged. The same goes for powertrains, including the excellent, twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 that will slot into the range-topping Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe. We'll know more when the sleeker, two-door C-Class is unveiled in September.
Mercedes caught testing stretched E-Class Maybach
Fri, Aug 21 2015The Mercedes-Maybach S600 won't be the only vehicle to wear the hyphenated name of two of the world's automotive luxury greats. That hulking S-Class will soon be joined by an E-Class variant, which should offer the same touch of subtle luxury as its big brother. At least, that's what we're guessing based on the latest round of spy photos, showing a stretched E-Class with some very telling camouflage. Pay attention, as our spies did, to the rear doors and C-pillar. Like the Maybach S600, the E-Class model features a larger quarter window, although unlike the S, the doors here look to be a bit larger than your usual E550 or E250. Also take note of the heavy tint on those rear windows. It's likely there to obscure whatever sumptuous hides and warm woods Maybach has fitted to the typically business-class interior. While the interior materials are likely to see sweeping changes, expect Mercedes to treat the exterior with a much gentler touch. There'll probably be some unique wheels and C-pillar-mounted Maybach badges, like what we've already seen on the S600. Mercedes calls CLA 'best launch in 20 years' as it warns dealers of tight supplies
Fri, 13 Dec 2013It's still in the early going, but it's looking more and more like the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA is a verifiable home run for the German brand. According to a new report from Bloomberg, the new small car isn't just widening the sales gap between Mercedes and BMW, it's attracting a new, younger breed of customers into the brand's showrooms. But that early success is straining supplies of the turbocharged four-door.
Dealers have been warned that the first half of 2014 will see limited supplies for CLA, with a letter to dealers indicating that "tight inventories and low days supply" will exist from February through June, despite the car's Kecskemét, Hungary plant running at full tilt.
"This is our best launch in 20 years," said Steve Cannon, the US boss for Mercedes. "The CLA has been a phenomenal success right out of the gate." The numbers certainly support that. We reported in early October that Mercedes moved 2,300 CLAs in its first week on sale, and now Bloomberg is saying CLA sales were almost singlehandedly responsible for Benz's November sales gains. Mercedes' annual sales are up 14 percent through the November, and it's enjoying a healthy 7,600-car lead over BMW.
