Beutiful Mercedes ML 500. New tires, new transmission, new power steering pump, new air shocks new Michelin tires. Always Mercedes dealer serviced. Runs and drives perfectly. Always garaged and adult driven. 98k freeway miles. Never smoked in. Leather seats are perfect. Paint is perfect. Wheels are perfect - no curb rash.

Bigger, faster, more stylish and aerodynamic, the Mercedes-Benz ML500 is one gorgeous SUV

When Mercedes introduced its first SUV, the M Class, in 1997, many people were disappointed. Even though it debuted with some impressive technological achievements, such as stability control and side airbags, there were problems with initial quality. It was boxy. It didn't feel enough like a luxury vehicle, let alone a Mercedes. But it became the third-best-selling Mercedes model in North America, after the C Class and the E Class.

For 2006, Mercedes completely redesigned the M and finally transformed it from an ugly duckling into a swan-like SUV. Fit and finish are vastly improved. Reliability issues appear to have been ironed out. The second-generation M has a new unibody platform, double-wishbone front suspension, four-link rear suspension, and a coefficient of drag of 0.4. It is longer, wider, and 0.4 inches lower than the old model.

In addition, new features include an electronically controlled seven-speed transmission, optional Active Curve-Illuminating Bi-Xenon headlights, an adjustable-height air suspension, standard all-wheel drive, and electronic traction control with downhill driving aid and Hill-Start Assist.

But best of all, it looks smoking hot.

This is really one beautiful SUV. With its streamlined, aerodynamic styling and more aggressive grille, the all-new M finally looks like a Mercedes. The company spent $600 million retooling the Vance (Ala.) factory where the M Class and the new R Class are both built, and judging by the results the money was well spent.

BEHIND THE WHEEL.

The $49,975 ML500 has a more powerful 5.0L, 24-valve V-8 that kicks out 302 hp @ 5,600 rpm, and, because of the heavy weight of the M Class, 339 lb-ft of torque @ 2,700.

That translates to 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds for the ML500.

Mercedes used the M Class to introduce its 7-seven speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The steering-wheel-mounted shifter provides the normal range of Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive, but it also lets drivers manually downshift and allows upshifts using rocker buttons on the wheel.

The advantage of more gears is that they increase performance and fuel economy, but it may take some drivers time to get used to it. To put the car into Park, for example, requires having to push in the shifter.

Off-road, despite its unibody construction and luxury personality, the M Class is surprisingly agile. With one touch of a button the all-wheel drive slips into off-road mode. The driver-activated "Downhill Speed Regulation" control uses antilock brakes and the throttle to help descend steep hills, and the optional height-adjustable air suspension lifts the vehicle up for better ground clearance.

Because the '06 M Class is longer and wider, handling is also improved. Thanks to its unibody construction, it rides more like a car than a truck. The ML500 comes with an adaptive damping system that lets the driver select—depending on road conditions and his or her inclinations—one of three settings: "normal," the slightly plusher "comfort" and the relatively taut "sport." The sport setting is particularly enjoyable and keeps the vehicle excitingly tight in curves.

Inside, the car is just as splendid. The cabin is roomy and much more luxurious than its predecessor, though such amenities will cost you even more. Sure, the ML500 has goodies like heated eight-way adjustable power leather front seats, real wood trim and chrome, infrared window wiper sensors, and dual-zone automatic climate control. But additional treats like satellite GPS navigation, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, power tailgate, and even front cupholders will tack on nearly $10,000 to the price tag.

Fully loaded, the ML500 rings up at nearly $60,000, which is pricey, but still pretty good for a Mercedes. Bear in mind the 2007 Mercedes E350 wagon with 4MATIC has an MSRP of $56,475 before options.

BUY IT OR BAG IT?

Ah, if only the all-new ML500 had been introduced in 2005, it would have been a smash. In addition to making it look and drive better, Mercedes also seems (so far at least) to have worked out all the quality kinks that tainted the original M Class. There have been no recalls yet for the '06 model. It has scored top marks on the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration's front- and side-crash tests.

Mercedes-Maybach SUV concept: Vision Ultimate Luxury interior teased

Wed, Apr 18 2018

Mercedes-Maybach posted a teaser video of what it calls "the ultimate in luxury" last week, saying that the featured, yet-to-be-named vehicle would be presented in the Beijing Motor Show. Now there's a teaser sketch giving us a wider look of the concept's interior, as well as a name. The concept also has a name by now: the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury. We guess that might have been coming, even if the name isn't exactly concise. But, the accompanying release also informs us that the concept is a combination of a high-end sedan and an SUV, confirming that it is indeed the high-riding vehicle that's been rumored for a while. The interior sketch also shows a very wide center console with stylized grab handles, which suit the SUV dimensions and aesthetic, without being as trucklike as the Maybach G650 Landaulet's interior. As well as the lavish two-tone color scheme and the touch of wood on the door panel, the concept interior shows a wide color instrument display ahead of the driver. The gear selectors are paddle shifters next to the chunky steering wheel rim, and the controls seem to have been grouped on the wheel's spokes, leaving just a few switches on the dashboard. Autocar reports that the concept will be followed by a 2019 production version, slated to debut at the Los Angeles show at the end of this year. It would be based on the Mercedes-Benz GLS, but with a more bespoke design inside out, as hinted by the concept. Basing it on the GLS would mean Mercedes would be manufacturing it at the Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama, making it the first Maybach built in the U.S. Related Video: Image Credit: Mercedes-Maybach Beijing Motor Show Maybach Mercedes-Benz SUV Concept Cars Luxury mercedes-maybach

Consumer Reports selling its road-tested roadsters [w/video]

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

Here's a chance to acquire a celebrity-owned vehicles, and this time at a discount instead of a premium. So the celebrity in this case is Consumer Reports, that magazine that could be equally adored and abhored by car enthusiasts. CR buys all of its test vehicles and usually finds willing second owners within its own ranks, but its opening its small used-car lot to the public. On the forecourt are four roadsters: an automatic 2012 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic with 6,600 miles for $36,500, a manual 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i with 8,400 miles for $45,000, a manual 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK250 for $39,500 and a manual 2013 Porsche Boxster with 7,000 miles for $48,000.
Those numbers mean a savings of $9,000 to $10,000 before haggling - each car is listed with an "Asking price" so there could be some wiggle room if you show up with pockets full of dough and eyes full of serious intent. Since the money CR earns from the sales go back into the magazine's budget to buy more test cars, however, it probably won't take any oddball trades, so you can forget about getting any purchasing help from that track-day AMC Javelin project on blocks in the back yard.
The vehicles have been taken care of and spiffed up for sale; buyers will take delivery at the CR test track in East Haddam, Connecticut and get a tour of the facilities. While you're there they'll even take you on a lap around the track so you can feel how your car handles when driven by one of its testers. They will probably not help you with advice on which toaster and dehumidifier to buy - you'll still need to get a subscription for that. Have a look at the video below to see a day in the life of a CR test car.

European jury picks finalists for 2015 Car of the Year

Tue, Dec 16 2014

There are countless Car of the Year awards handed out each year, and naturally, Europe has its own way of doing things. Every year, a panel of jurists representing seven publications in seven different languages and seven different countries get together to name their joint Car of the Year. The panel released a list of 32 candidates back in July, and it has now whittled that list down to seven nominees. The list consists of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, the Citroen C4 Cactus (shown), the Ford Mondeo, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Nissan Qashqai, the Renault Twingo and the Volkswagen Passat. Of those seven, only two are available in the US – those being the Mondeo (sold Stateside as the Fusion) and the C-Class. The Passat is an entirely different model in North America, the Qashqai isn't offered here, Citroen and Renault don't even participate in our market and the BMW 2 Series is represented here only by the completely different coupe and convertible. Expect the one and only recipient of the 2015 Car of the Year award to be announced at the Geneva Motor Show this coming March, and while you're waiting, you can place your guesses for the eventual winner in Comments.
