This sharp driving and looking Mercedes coupe is in excellent condition, with only 66,631 miles.  With 362 horsepower and a curb weight of 3,635 pounds the performance is quite good, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds, and the handling on twisty roads is superb.  Motor Trend published the following article in October of 2003:

The recipe comes straight out of the '60s musclecar heyday: Drop a biggish engine into a smallish chassis to create a lusty, V-8-powered, two-door hardtop coupe. The word "synergy" wasn't around in 1965, but that's what Mercedes-Benz gets in its top-of-the-range CLK55 AMG: a performance car that's more than the sum of its parts. Those parts themselves aren't especially humble, either. The second-generation CLK line appeared for '03 (a Cabrio joins the family in '04) using a lot of existing E Class componentry to bring the swagger of the flagship CL coupes to a friendlier price point. The rigid, aerodynamic body carries a full complement of Mercedes' finest hardware, from well-sorted brakes, steering, and suspension bits to all the computer-based driver aids (Electronic Stability Control, Automatic Slip Control, Brake Assist, and more).  ...Mercedes adds the stroked 5.5-liter V-8 assembled by in-house tuners AMG.  ...In naturally aspirated form, the engine makes 362 horses and 376 lb-ft of torque, giving the 3635-pound CLK plenty of pop. Lapping Germany's Hockenheim race course (the new track through the stadium, not the old one through the woods), the CLK55 felt solid, but lively and eager. More responsive than the E55, more settled than the SL55, and more agile than the S55, the midsize coupe was the nicest of the line in hard direction changes, heavy braking into bends, and clawing out onto straights. The stiff body structure and supple suspension give good comfort and accurate control--about all we might have wished for was more talkative steering and a true manual gearbox. An impromptu slalom competition demonstrated not only how calm the CLK remains when being flogged and how lustily the V-8 pulls from modest revs, but also how enthusiastic the electronic-traction nanny can be. Dashes through the course, at equal levels of intensity, consistently gave faster times and less drama when the ESP and ASR were left engaged. The dampness of a morning shower especially emphasized the system's value, but even when the pavement dried, the electronics were still the fast way to go. Impressive.  A dense array of luxury features and convenience items fills the CLK's interior, though the layout is more logical and intuitively manageable than some recent Mercedes. Front seats are an AMG-specific sport design, giving reasonable lateral retention while retaining the complex power adjustability, pneumatic contouring, and memory you expect. The back seat is sculpted into two buckets.

At $69,470 suggested retail, the CLK55 AMG is a lot of money, but it's also a lot of car. The pieces come together in a particularly happy way, blending the sheer thrust we've loved since the '60s with 21st-century polish.

Watch these Super Bowl car commercials [UPDATE]

Sat, Feb 2 2019

On Sunday, February 3, the New England Patriots take on the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Some will watch because of the storyline of the old-school dynasty facing off against the new-school wunderkinds, but a large chunk of people will solely be watching for the commercials. Lucky for those who slot into the latter category, many of the manufacturers release their super bowl ads ahead of time, or have simply opted to release the commercials only online. Scroll down to see what car companies have already shown their cards. Audi Audi goes the comedic route in its clip for the Big Game. It starts with a grandpa showing his grandson a gorgeous Audi e-tron GT tucked away in a garage before he's shaken awake. Turns out he was just choking on a cashew in his cubicle at his boring job. Dodge Dodge does what it knows: create enough smoke to punch more holes in the ozone layer. Set to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia (the Super Bowl is in Atlanta, get it!?), a Challenger SRT Hellcat widebody, Charger SRT Hellcat, and Durango SRT are seen ripping through a city, leaving a trail of rubber crumbs in their wakes. Genesis Genesis has not yet released a commercial prior to the Super Bowl, but it is the official luxury vehicle of the NFL. Because of this, Genesis is hosting a fan experience for 10 days before the game. It will showcase the brand's cars, offer games, and have photos opportunities and autograph days. Hyundai Jason Bateman alert! Hyundai is one of the few companies to hook a major celebrity for its advertisement, and the casting is perfect. Bateman plays a doorman who takes people to various terrible events in life, including root canals, the middle seat, and shopping for a car. The ad centers around Hyundai's Shopper Assurance, which is Hyundai's new method for car shopping. Jeep An old 1963 Jeep Gladiator finds its strength in the crusher and transforms into a a new 2020 Gladiator, with a firm declaration that the nameplate is officially back. Kia Through Kia's commercial, a young boy wonders out loud what it'd be like if the millions spent on Super Bowl commercials were used to help others.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive gets official US launch

Mon, Jul 21 2014

It's finally time to plug in the first production Mercedes-Benz-branded electric vehicle in the US. The Daimler division, which also sells a few of its battery-electric Smart ForTwo vehicles here in the states, has officially launched sales of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class ED. Even better, the US will be the first market in the world to give the general public access to the new plug-in. As with many other EV debuts, the flyover states will have to wait a bit. Mercedes-Benz is only selling the B-Class ED in 10 coastal states, including California, Oregon, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Maine, and hasn't said anything about when a broader release might happen. Earlier this month, the US Department of Energy rated the B-Class electric with an 87-mile single-charge range, which is comparable to that of the Nissan Leaf and BMW i3. The other shoe dropped, though, when it was revealed that the model has an 84 miles per gallon equivalent rating, which is about 30 percent less then both of those other EVs. The culprit for the model, which puts out 177 horsepower and has a base price of $41,150, is its heavier curb weight. Check out Autoblog's "First Drive" impressions here.

Genesis cars win accolades, offer value — so why are sales so bad?

Tue, Jul 31 2018

My high-school buddy Brent Cormier was so smitten with the Genesis G80 when he saw it at an event I hosted at SXSW in 2016 he bought a used 2013 Hyundai Genesis a short time later and fell in love with the car. "It surpasses my every expectation," said Cormier, a self-described "renaissance man" who owns and runs a real estate agency with his wife Laura, is a food service executive chef and part owner of Austin-based Thin the Herd Guitars. "I was locked into Mercedes and Audi for 10 years," he added. "And felt trapped in an endless pit of maintenance costs." After owning the Genesis over the past two years — including using it as an Uber and Lyft driver to earn extra cash — Cormier learned what some frugal luxury sedan buyers and a handful of car reviewers have discovered: Genesis offers great bang for the buck compared to other premium brands and can compete with the best in terms of performance, features and comfort. Hyundai's luxury brand also earned a prominent third-party endorsement last week when for the first time Genesis topped J.D. Power's 2018 APEAL study, surpassing German luxury-performance icon Porsche. The APEAL study (which stands for Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout) "measures owners' emotional attachment and level of excitement across 77 attributes," ranging from performance to comfort, and asks nearly 68,000 owners of new 2018 models to score vehicles on a 1,000-point scale. In its second year ranked as a stand-alone brand, Genesis earned an APEAL score that bumped it up 15 points to 884 and helped push it past Porsche — and past BMW, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Cadillac, Land Rover and Lexus, in order of ranking. Last month, Genesis also topped J.D. Power's Initial Quality Survey (IQS) for the first time this year. And both its models were awarded Top Safety Pick Plus ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, among 11 Plus ratings in all for Korean vehicles. Despite high J.D. Power rankings and great reviews, Genesis U.S. sales were off 50 percent for the first six months of 2018 compared to 2017, and in June Genesis sold only 796 vehicles — the first time U.S. numbers dropped below 1,000 in a month. Part of Genesis's APEAL and IQS success can be attributed to its small product lineup: just two models, the G80 and G90 sedans, with a third, the 2019 G70, launching later this year. And while those numbers may help in J.D.
